WELCOMENgaji gurrjin,
We hope you are feeling happy in our Yawuru country
Yawuru is happy to support the ‘Rhythm and Ride Rodeo, Campdraft & Country
Music’. Kimberley Indigenous people, including Yawuru, have a proud tradition
of working on country and on pastoral stations. We have grown up knowing
the lifestyle, the amazing skills and the strong character of the riders who you
see in the ring this weekend.
That connection of our people to the land, the lifestyle and the community
events of the region makes our ‘liyan’ (wellbeing) feel strong. Liyan is at the
heart of Yawuru’s endeavours and ensures the Yawuru community is
welcoming and embodies traditional Broome values of inclusiveness,
hospitality and friendship.
It makes us proud to see the riders and competitors share their skills with the
audience. Rodeos, horse work and, of course music, bring people together and
are part of our cultural lives. We hope you enjoy the atmosphere of the event
and cheer on the competitors as they challenge themselves to reach their
goals. We’re really happy to see this tradition carried on by a new generation of
young people who are learning the ropes and testing themselves in the
competition. We wish them all the best of luck!
We look forward an exciting weekend of events that are exhilarating to watch,
and also encourages young people to build on the traditions of our past.

Saltwater Country is a multifaceted Aboriginal lead organisation that buildson the symbolic power of the cowboy in remote Australia. A position ofstrength, where the freedom of the cowboy became the freedom ofAboriginal people and our communities to find our own way. To this dayAboriginal people maintain a living and working connection to the pastoral& rodeo ways of life whilst maintaining connection to country and culture. Itis through our collective experience that we understand the pastoral androdeo history of the area, how being on country doing something you lovecan anchor an individual whilst also providing a culturally appropriate andnecessary response to many of the issues plaguing the community andcreating pathways into industry.
More than just another rodeo.
We are committed to a collaborative & innovate approach that will enableBroome people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to developopportunities and expand the ways they contribute to the community.
In addition to building our event Rhythm & Ride: Rodeo, Campdraft andCountry Music and ensuring local Aboriginal people have the opportunity tocompete, train or work at the event we are also developing the opportunityfor Rodeo & Riding clinics and an Equine Assisted Learning programme(including equine therapy and training trainers) in partnership with ProfessorJuli Coffin; whilst working towards a purpose-built Rodeo & Riding School,Equine & Cultural Tourism, Unique Kimberley Food, Pastoral Industrypathways and Rehabilitated Brumby Sales. These initiatives will build on theemployment and training we have already provided through our event. Wehave a high level of professional skill mixed with real life experience thatenables us to design and deliver such programmes and achieve measurableoutcomes for the benefit of individuals and the community at large.
