Your Chamber is busy planning events, recruiting and marketing “buy local” to support and promote businesses in our community. The theme for this year is “the West Volusia Area is the place and 2016 is the time to grow and do more.”
The area is improving economically, adding new businesses, while continuing to promote the area as a destination that other cities will envy. In my “day” job, working for UCF, I was informed by my boss, who lives in Oviedo, that he has discovered DeLand, and loves it.
In addition to businesses, one thing that makes us unique is the Chamber’s commitment to supporting Education in our community. In May, the Education Committee of the Chamber sponsors the Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon and the FAB Gala (Females About Business). The Crystal Apple
recognizes exceptional teachers in West Volusia and FAB raises funds to support women in business by awarding scholarships that assist them in advancing expertise and training to improve their businesses.
Join Monday morning FUEL group and the Tuesday Let’s Do Lunch group. On the 23rd, the quarterly West Volusia Means Business will learn about the outcome of the 2016 Legislative Session in the “State of the Region.” We are excited about the opening of our Orange City office to better serve ALL of the West Volusia Communities we serve. The office is located at the Launch Credit Union on Veterans Memorial Parkway.
Please refer to the calendar posted on the website, plan to attend at least one event per month. Bring plenty of business cards and take advantage of
the many networking opportunities available to you. The DeLand Area Chamber and Orange City Alliance is “your” resource for assisting your business to grow and be more successful. Welcome two new members of our Chamber staff. When you meet them in the community, please welcome Jenna Workman and John Poage.
LINDA BRADLEY THACKER, PH.D.President, DeLand Area Chamber
and Orange City Alliance
Letter from the President
The Small Business Development Center at Daytona State College has opened an office at the school’s DeLand campus. The center’s manager, Van Canada, now will split his time between the main office at the college’s Daytona Beach campus and DeLand, where he will work on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as by appointment. He said the new location makes it easier for business owners seeking the center’s assistance to make appointments.
The Small Business Development Center is also working on setting up a “CEO XChange” program on the west side of the county. The roundtable group, facilitated by the center, will have 12 to 16 people in upper-management or ownership positions, such as CEOs or chief financial officers, from companies with $1 million in sales or higher.
Canada said he sees an increase in new businesses in West Volusia, particularly in places such as the DeLand Municipal Airport and business parks in both DeLand and DeBary, as well as the county-run DeLand Crossings industrial park near the Interstate 4/State Road 44 interchange.
