It would be twenty-two years following two fateful events in his youth before Charles Granger could answer the question he often asked himself: when did he first receive God’s call? He was, after all, far from your ‘All-American kid’. His illusive answer would come on a Sunday after preaching in Buckhead Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Charles noted a familiar face in the congregation. Finally recognizing her as a former Jacksonville high school classmate, he invited her to say a few words. Never did he expect her to announce that back in the day their Pastor was not known as “a nice boy.” Oh, he came from a nice family alright, but with the entire country gripped by The Great Depression, neither church nor Sunday school were fundamental in raising four sons and a daughter. It was September 1946. Charles, the hot-shot high school athlete, first began to ‘see the light’. Knowing his teammates had to pass by a certain church, he waited there to entice them to skip church and go practice football. A cluster of boys had gathered around him when a gentleman came out from the church. “What are you doing out here?” he asked. Charles boldly replied his intention to lead the boys away from church. The man invited Charles to go inside with the others. He strongly rejected the invitation. Then the man said, “You need to go to church, too.” “Not me,” Charles answered. “Someday you will,” and with that, they left Charles to scoff alone. After all, beside his stellar reputation as an athlete, he was a young man who always had a job; his current one at Stetzer’s Grocery. After work he and his mates from the store would find some older guy to buy cheap wine for them and together they would carouse ‘til the wee small hours then sleep ‘til noon on Sunday. Fast forward three months to December. One Saturday, at work, Charles was doing his usual when he was startled by a voice saying, “You need to go to church tomorrow.” Well, he brushed that off quick enough and kept his usual Saturday night brouhaha. Next day he awoke at 7:30 rather than noon. Unable to fall back asleep, he finally showered, dressed, sneaked out of the house— and went to church! But that is not the end of the story. In the same take-no-prisoners style he did everything, not only did bad-boy Charles Granger attend church that morning, but returned every Sunday and Wednesday night afterward. Nor did a four-year stint in the Navy Reserve lessen his zeal one bit. At present, twenty years of education to his credit, sixty-nine years’ service in no fewer than thirty Pastoral and other Ministries, our cherished character continues serving his God. Moral of the story: keep listening, the Lord calls in mysterious ways. Barbara E. Connor

Kindred at HomeThose of us who have gone

through life before The Cloisterswith a sense of independence, easily providing self-care maynow find their inability to do sostressful and even frightening. For the New Year, here are fivestrategies to help maintainhappiness and health:

• Keep Moving. Exercise andmovement are extremelyimportant, however, sincedifferent exercises affect thebody in different ways youshould first consult yourcaregiver.

• Stay Hydrated. To avoidheadaches, depression, fatigue and evenconcentration problemsdrink plenty of water—91ounces per day for women,125 per day for men.

• Set Goals to Develop aSense of Purpose. Whetherit’s a household chore orcommunity involvement orvolunteering, get involved.

• Maintain Good PersonalHygiene. Brushing one’steeth, bathing and dressingoneself are most importantin maintaining one’sindependence.

• Maintain a Social Life.Avoid isolation. Reach outregularly to family orneighbors. Even a standingphone call may serve instaying connected. Wishingyou a happy and healthyNew Year! R. Sandvall,BSW386-871-1953
