Fellow Winos,

Congratulations! The future of the wine industry is forever changed and it’s all because of you. While stuffy wine critics were busy pontificating, we drinkers were being more adventurous than ever, experimenting with new wines and talking about them with friends.

Enter Wine Riot. Today is a day for discovering amazing wines and sharing them with friends. Tomorrow, on the other hand, you may find yourself racking your brain, trying to remember the name of that one blow-your-mind-wine and the name of that hottie who turned you on… to some killer Riesling. What’s a wino to do? Fear not! It’s Second Glass to the rescue, with our shiny new mobile site: m.secondglass.com!

Not only will the mobile site help you tackle the Riot but also conquer future wine scenarios. Available on all web enabled phones (iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid, etc), this brand new site will help you keep track of the wines you love, want to buy and want to recommend to your drinkin’ buddies.

Speaking of dropping knowledge, are you curious about the difference between Shiraz and Syrah? Wonder what’s up with naked Chardonnay!? Our Wine Intelligence Unit (WIU) members, running around in bright green t-shirts, are bona fide wine experts here to answer any and all of your wine questions.

Last but not least, this guide is chock full of tasty bits of info to help you rock the riot. Check out the wine glossary for your daily dose of vocab, join us in one of our Crash Courses where you can learn the lowdown from the experts, and toast your newfound know-how in the Gold Sparkler lounge with a glass of bubbly!

Knowledge is power! Drink more wine!

Second Glass, the company that puts on

Wine Riot, is 100% owned, operated and

funded by the four people in this photo. It

is a Boston-based company that keeps an

office in Chinatown. The company was origi-

nally founded in 2006 by Tyler Balliet as a side

project but really took off when he partnered

with Morgan First in October 2008. Since then

the team has grown with two more full-time employees, a small handful of part-timers, fantastic

vendors and contractors and a small army of interns. When you see us at the riot, say hi!

Second Glass staffers will be giving a 20-minute course on how to

best attack the Wine Riot. They will explain the new Mobile App,

built for remembering all of the wines at the Riot (m.secondglass.

com), introduce the Wine Intelligence Unit members, and show

you a general lay of the land. Learn the best way to taste wine

so you can teach your friends and go home a hero. This is your

chance to hear from the founders and planners of the Riot how

to get the most from your experience.

Night of the Bubbles @ 7:30pm, Riot 1 @ 1:30pm, Riot 2 @ 7:30pm

Swirling the wine in your glass adds

oxygen and intensifies the

smell of the wine.

Really get in there for the full aromas. If your nose gets wet, you’re doing a good job!

Move the wine to the

different areas of your

tongue and mouth for the

full taste.

In order to taste as many wines as possible, spit into dump bucket. It’s what all the cool kids do!

BALANCE: the harmony between major components in wine (alcohol, acidity, tannin, fruit, etc.).

BODy: the weight of a wine in your mouth. Think light body = skim milk and full body = whole milk.

BLEND: to combine two or more lots of wine to achieve a more flavorful and complex wine greater than the sum of each part. Often these wines contain multiple grapes.

DRy: the opposite of sweet. The less sugar a wine has the drier it is.

FERMENTATION: the process of yeast eating the sugar from crushed grapes. This produces alcohol and carbon dioxide.

FINISh: the flavors left in your mouth after you’ve swallowed (or spit) the wine.

NOSE: how a wine smells.

OAk: many wines are aged in oak barrels. The flavor imparted depends on the kind of oak and length of time in barrel.

OLD WORLD: refers to the wine producing countries in Europe. New World refers to countries that “recently” started making wine like the US, Argentina and Australia.

TANNIN: a gritty, puckering quality (similar to the qualities in tea), usually found in young red wines. It come from grape skins and mellows as a wine ages.

VARIETAL: a fancy word for what type of grape was used.

VINTAGE: the date on the bottle that refers to the year the grapes were harvested.
