The European Society ofOphthalmology (SOE)have the pleasure of inviting you to the next SOECongress which will take place in Vienna, 6 -9 June 2015.An unsurpassed scientific programme with anoutstanding set of speakers, covering all topics ofophthalmology, is being designed in closecollaboration with many subspecialty societies fromboth sides of the Atlantic, ensuring state-of-the-artcontributions from the best experts from aroundthe globe. International renowned KeynoteLecturers will address pertinent issues and speciallyinvited speakers at subspecialty symposia willupdate on us on the current approaches to clinicalproblems. e Congress will be held at the AustrianConvention Centre (ACV) in Vienna. Scientific Programmee preparation of the Scientific Programme for the SOE2015 Congress is at an advanced stage and includessymposia covering all aspects of ophthalmology,Instructional Courses, Free Papers, Electronic PosterSessions, Wet Labs and the always popular Programme forAllied Health. It is now a tradition for the EUPO coursefor Residents to take place during the first two days of theSOE Congress. In 2015 the EUPO course will focus onUveitis and Glaucoma.

Keynote SpeakersEach day of the Congress, a Keynote Lecture will bedelivered by a leading world authority on specific topics.We are proud that Doctors Joseph Demer, Neil Miller,Anja Tuulonen and Masayo Takahashi have accepted ourinvitation to come to Vienna as the SOE 2015 KeynoteLecturers.

Joseph L. Demer MD PhD Paediatrics and Strabismus

Joseph L. Demer, MD, PhD, is Chiefof Paediatric Ophthalmology andStrabismus in the Department ofOphthalmology, David GeffenSchool of Medicine at UCLA, and amember of the Neuroscience andBioengineering InterdepartmentalPrograms. He holds the Leonard Apt

Professor Professorship of Ophthalmology, and isProfessor of Neurology, Director of the Ocular MotilityClinical Laboratory, and chair of the EyeSTAR residency-PhD Training Program. Dr. Demer received his MD and PhD in BiomedicalEngineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1983. Dr.Demer is editor, editorial board member, or reviewer fornumerous publications in clinical and basic science. Forover 37 years, Dr. Demer has investigated ocular motility.In 2003, he received the Friedenwald Award from theAssociation for Research in Vision and Ophthalmologyand in 2004, an Achievement Award from the AlconResearch Institute for work on extraocular muscles andorbital connective tissues. Dr. Demer’s research has beensupported by the U.S. National Eye Institute since 1985.He has published over 230 peer reviewed papers and 40book chapters. His practice includes in paediatric andadult strabismus, nystagmus, consultative clinical magneticresonance imaging, and paediatric ophthalmology. He isan instrument-rated airplane pilot with 1500 flight hours.

Dr. Neil Miller attended HarvardUniversity, graduating Magna cumLaude. He then matriculated toJohns Hopkins Medical School.Aer finishing medical school, hetook an internship in medicine atJohns Hopkins, followed by anophthalmology residency at the

Wilmer Eye Institute and a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of California, SanFrancisco, with Dr. William F. Hoyt.Dr. Miller is currently Professor of Ophthalmology,Neurology, and Neurosurgery at the Johns HopkinsMedical Institutions, and also the Frank B. WalshProfessor of Neuro-Ophthalmology and head of theNeuro-Ophthalmology and Orbital Units of the WilmerInstitute.Dr. Miller was president of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society from 2000 to 2002 andChairman of the Executive Board from 2002 to 2004. Hehas been past president of the International Neuro-Ophthalmology Society on three occasions: in 1982,1992, and 2008. In 2009, he was given a lifetimeachievement award by the American Academy ofOphthalmology.Dr. Miller has authored or co-authored over 470 articles,89 chapters, and 11 books and has spoken at numerousmeetings around the world. Many of Dr. Miller’s previousFellows and residents hold faculty positions at majorinstitutions throughout the United States and around theworld.

Anja TuulonenGlaucoma

Professor Anja Tuulonen, M.D.,Ph.D. is the CEO of Tays EyeCentre, Tampere UniversityHospital, Finland. Prior to thisposition, she served as the ClinicHead and Professor in Departmentof Ophthalmology, and the Head ofthe Institute of Clinical Medicine,University of Oulu, Finland. Professor Tuulonencompleted her medical and residency training at theUniversity of Oulu, and conducted a post-doctoralResearch Fellowship at Tus NEMC, Boston, USA.Professor Tuulonen has activities in numerous societiesand organizations. Nationally, she is e.g. Permanent Expertin Ophthalmology of National Supervisory Authority forWelfare and Health, the Chair of the Finnish EMB Guideline for glaucoma, served as the President of the FinnishOphthalmological Society and member of several workinggroups of Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and theMinistry of Education in 2000-07 (access to care, researchfunding and evaluation of residency programs) whichprojects led into three legal acts and laws in Finland.Internationally, Professor Tuulonen has served e.g. as anexecutive board member, Treasurer and is currently theVice President of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS),current Treasurer of the Glaucoma Research Society, andan External Expert on Health for EU Expert Panel.Professor Tuulonen’s recent research interests includehealth services research, health economics, secondaryresearch (systematic reviews), in addition to glaucomadiagnostics and therapy from early on. Her engagement inmultiple national and international research collaborationhas been widely published and extensively presented tointernational audiences. She is dedicated to teaching andmentoring clinicians, researchers and health care leaders.Professor Tuulonen is also widely invited lecturer inleadership and quality improvement in health care andinvolved in numerous multidisciplinary leadershipprograms since 1994.

Masayo Takahashi M.D., Ph.D isProject leader, Laboratory for RetinalRegeneration Research at RIKEN.Dr. Masayo Takahashi received herMD from Kyoto University in 1986,and her PhD from the sameinstitution in 1992. Aer serving asassistant professor in the Department

of Ophthalmology, Kyoto University Hospital, she movedto the Salk Institute in 1995, where she discovered thepotential of stem cells as a tool for retinal therapy. Shereturned to Kyoto University Hospital in 1997, and since2001 served as an associate professor at the TranslationalResearch Center in the Kyoto University Hospital. Shejoined the CDB as a team leader of the retinalregeneration research team in 2006. Her clinical specialtyis retinal disease – macular diseases and retinal hereditarydiseases in particular. Her aim is to understand thesediseases at a fundamental level and develop retinalregeneration therapies.

Coursese courses largely have more of a practical approach andmost are instructional courses. e organisers will bringtogether a carefully selected faculty in their field ofspecialty for the courses. To keep the setting as informaland interactive as possible, the number of seats are limitedand advance booking, when registering, is required.Sometimes, there will be topics overlapping with some ofthe symposia, but the courses will then typically focus on aparticular aspect.e courses have been divided into three differenteducational levels: basic, intermediate and advanced.Please note courses during SOE 2015 are free of charge toregistered delegates.

Climate and Dresse climate in Vienna is temperate and in June it is usuallymild and sunny but be prepared for rain and chillyevenings. From June to July the daytime temperatureranges from 14º C to 24º C (57º - 75ºF).

CME CreditsWe are happy to inform you that the SOE 2015 offersContinuing Medical Education (CME) credits for theCongress in Vienna. e number of CME credits that willbe assigned to SOE 2015 will be announced on theCongress website prior to the event.
