SYMPOSIUM INFORMATION

Date and Venue The International Symposium on Durian and other Humid Tropical Fruits will be held during 2-4 June 2015. Symposium activities will take place at Maneechan Resort hotel, Chanthaburi, THAILAND. This hotel is in the city of Chanthaburi, 250 km., 3.0-3.5 hrs. from Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Facilities The Secretariat Office will be set up near the main conference room to facilitate and assist delegates and participants during the Symposium. Services will be available between 08:00-17:00 hrs.

Language Official language is English. No translation will be available during the Symposium.

Symposium Registration Registration is required to attend all scientific sessions. Registration fees will cover attendance to the scientific sessions, professional excursion, tea/coffee, lunch and reception dinner. Besides, for those who pay full fee (all ISHS members and non-ISHS members) will receive a copy of symposium proceedings that will be published as a volume of Acta Horticulturae.

contest A. Qualifications for contest of international durian fruits and commercial varieties 1. Contesters should submit 2 durian fruits for each of contest criteria, ensuring

that at least one fruit will be ripen on the day of the contest. 2. Durian fruits for the contest should have the following characteristics (to ensure

the quality of the harvest to qualify for the international contest 2.1 Uniformity of size and shape of each fruit. 2.2 Fruits should be clean of any particles attached to the fruits and free from

any bruises resulting from insects and diseases. 2.3 Fruits should be carefully transported to prevent fruit damages.

3. The fruits brought for contest will not be returned to the owners as this will be further placed in the exhibition.

4. The judges decision shall be strictly followed as final. Judging criteria for the international and commercial durian contest Outside appearance - Size: relatively big - Inherent Characteristics: beautiful spines, proportional, green or golden yellow

skin - Uniformity - Wholeness

Inside appearance - Pericarp: thin - Flesh – flavor: thick flesh, fine, intact, scent of sweetness, sweet and

creaminess - Color: bright - Seed: less and small - Wholeness: wholeness of the flesh, free from bruises, hard peduncle, wet core, etc.

B. Judging requirements for the processed durian food products contest 1. Processed product from durian which are not limited to varieties, long shelf-life,

viability as a raw material for industrial purposes, and high export potential 2. Two sets of product packaged in a suitable packaging material that is attractive

to consumers including two sets of recipes, by granting permission to the Department of Agricultural Extension to disseminate the recipe information to the public.

3. The products submitted for the contest will not be returned to the owner. 4. The Judges decision shall be strictly followed as final. Judging criteria for the processed durian food products contest - Outside appearance - Flavor, smell/odor/scent, color - Cleanliness with no mixture of foreign materials - Packaging and labeling - Recipe

C. Judging requirements for the Durian processed accessory products 1. Contesters could submit unlimited number of products. 2. For the prize awarded products, the Department of Agricultural Extension will

put the products in the exhibition for the interested visitors and for the business operators to adopt for their own businesses.

3. The contest organizers and/or its staff shall not be held liable to any damages caused to the products, if such damages resulted from any circumstances beyond the organizers’ and/or staff’s responsibility.

4. For the prize awarded products, the owners could use the gained prizes for advertisement purposes.

5. The Judges decision shall be strictly followed as final. Judging criteria for the Durian processed accessory products - The products submitted for contest should be made from at least 60% Durian

raw material. - Innovative, creative, and unique - Usefulness and suitability of its appearance - Refinement, suitability of the product shape, beauty - Suitability of other using materials as a building parts or decoration - High potential for industrial purposes - The Judges decision shall be strictly followed as final.

Financial support The National Organizing Committee does not have funds available to offer for travel assistance and accommodation. However, it may be possible to grant funding for a limited numbers of ISHS member participants from developing countries.

Guidelines for paper and poster submission According to the new ISHS policy, all abstracts and papers should be submitted through http://www.actahort.org/members/symposiar?nr=585.

Abstract and full paper should follow the format provided by ISHS at http://www.ishs.org/wri/pap1.htm

Poster size should be 1.2 m high and 0.8 m wide. All presenters should indicate whether you intend to make your contribution as

oral or poster presentation. The national scientific committee will make final decision on acceptance and mode of presentation of the submitted abstracts. In addition, all presented papers will be submitted to the reviewers appointed by the scientific committee for final decision whether the papers will be selected for publishing in Acta Horticulturae. The authors are requested to submit their full manuscripts by May 31, 2015

Visual aids A Computer and LCD projector will be available to assist the speakers for their oral

presentation.

Professional excursion A one-day professional excursion is being organized on June 4, 2015. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Admission fee of this excursion for an accompanying person is US$ 30 per person.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Location THAILAND is located on the continent of Southeast Asia, bordered with Myanmar and Laos in the north, Laos and Cambodia in the northeast and the east, and Malaysia in the south. It covers an area of 513,000 sq. km., stretching 1,650 km. from north to south and 800 km. across from east to west. The population is approximately 67 million with about 10 million in Bangkok, the capital city. CHANTHABURI is famous for its abundance of tropical fruits and as a center for gem mining. The eastern part of Chanthaburi is also blessed with rich, verdant forests and scenic waterfalls. The Chanthaburi River flows through the provincial capital. During this symposium, World Durian Fair will be held at the Triangular Na Choei Ground, 1.5-2 km from the hotel. The fair features contests of fruit decorated floats, beauty queens, popular tropical fruits of Chanthaburi such as rambutan, durian, mangosteen, Rakam and Salacca zalacca and varieties of santol. Climate and clothing The climate is tropical with high humidity. The precipitation ranges between 900-4,000 mm per annum. The rainy season starts from June to October, cool season from December to February and summer from March to May. The average day temperature is about 30oC whilst the average night temperature is about 20oC. Very light clothing is all that is necessary.

Language THAI is the national language. Many people can speak English.

Money exchange Money exchange is available at the airports, banks and hotels, and Thai Baht is available from ATM machine. The exchange rate at present is approximately Baht 32- to US$ 1.

Passport and visa Visitors to Thailand must be in possession of a valid national passport or other

internationally recognized travel documents. Citizens from most countries of the world can enter Thailand as tourists for up to 15 days without a visa. Those wishing to stay longer than 15 days should obtain visas from Thai embassies or consulate offices in their own countries or countries nearest them. However, please check with the Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate in your country to be sure whether or not a visa is required to enter Thailand before your departure. You may also check requirement for visas on the internet.

Health regulation No actual vaccination is presently required.

Insurance The Symposium fee does not include insurance of participants against accidents, sickness or loss of personal property. All participants are advised to make the necessary arrangements before departure from their own countries.

Transportation All foreign participants may enter Thailand through Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang International Airports. Transportation service will be arranged for oversea participants from Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang International Airport to the Symposium venue. Travelling from Bangkok on the air-conditioned vehicles is also convenient for participants. Chanthaburi can also be reached comfortably both day and night by deluxe air-conditioned coaches from Bangkok. Accommodation Maneechan Hotel, the venue of the Symposium, has been selected to accommodate participants and those accompanying them. The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and equipped with modern appliances. All rooms are comfortable with air-conditioning, private bathroom, wall-to-wall carpeting, television, etc. Special discount room rates have been negotiated for the participants and delegates of the Symposium.
