I would like to welcome all of our great friends back for another terrific season on the water. We’re eagerly waiting to serve you and make your boating experience the very best. We should have great hot summer days, so frequent trips to the Marina will definitely rejuvenate everyone! So come down for some good times and leave your worries behind!

While in the Marina or on the water, please remember SAFETY FIRST! There will be new boaters and new boats.

Please observe the “NO Wake” zones. They are for your protection and the protection of everyone’s boats. Always wear life jackets when in the water and our youngest boaters should wear them at all times. Remember for your safety, there is NO SWIMMING in the Marina. I want everyone to have a fantastic summer here at Port Royal Marina. If I can do anything to make the time you spend here better, please let me know. My door is always open.

Have a Safe and Happy Summer!

In an effort to keep sea lions off of and away from the boats and docks here at Port Royal Marina, our staff has implemented several different strategies. You will notice physical barriers such as red buckets and construction fencing that have been very successful in keeping the sea lions off of the docks. Other measures we use are visual presence, yelling, clapping, banging a stick, rolling a dock cart towards them, waving of arms and spraying them with a water hose to encourage them to leave. We have provided customers with construction fencing to put on their swim steps to help prevent sea lions from getting up on them. If you have a need for some just simply come into the office and we will get you the fencing that you need! Much like a bouncer at a bar at closing time our philosophy is “we don’t care where you go but you can’t stay here!”

In 2005, Port Royal Yacht Club was honored to be invited by the Bay View Boat Club of San Francisco to host the first annual Southern California Plastic Classic Regatta.

Sponsored by the Bay View Boat Club and run in the SF South Bay between Pier 54 and Alameda, the Plastic Classic has a history of slightly zany behavior, maybe that’s why they thought that PRYC would fit right in!

Vessels for the Plastic Classic Regatta must be designed in 1982 or before and constructed of “plastic” (fiberglass).

For those that can make the event it’s a must see!

Sat. June 6 from 5:00pm thru Sun. June 7 2015 1:00am.

Additionally, most you have probably noticed that we have employed a security service to remove sea lions from the docks. What might not be as noticeable is that Port Royal Marina was one of the key players in getting a new floating barge to be installed in the main channel where the old bait receiver the sea lions used to use was (before it sank). By the end of June, the city of Redondo Beach plans to have this 700-square-foot barge equipped with navigational lights in the middle of the main channel so sea lions and can have a place to haul-out or to rest for most of the day. The barge will be able to support up to 116 sea lions. While the sea lions have posed a problem recently, the good news is that our strategies are working and when the new barge is installed it is anticipated that we will get back to normal.

Please keep in mind that sea lions are wild animals and are unpredictable. Do not put yourself in harm’s way!

If you see a sea lion on the docks please, do not hesitate to alert our Marina staff immediately in the office or by calling 310-376-0431.

The King Harbor Fireworks show is one of the most popular events in the area celebrating Independence Day 2015. As a result, parking will be limited in our area.

All Port Royal Marina customers attending the event are encouraged to arrive early at our marina in order to secure a parking space. Remember: first come, first served. Cars must have a current and valid parking permit prominently displayed to park in our parking lot.

4th Of July At Port Royal Marina

No matter the size, age, or cost, there is one thing every boat needs, and that's maintenance.

Fortunately, routine maintenance and small repairs aren't very complicated. In the long run, a little elbow grease will definitely pay off in efficiency and performance.

The most basic (and simplest) task is to wash your boat regularly. Rinse your boat thoroughly with fresh water after every outing to remove sea salt. A long-handled boat brush or a spray wand makes the job easy. You can find brush wands at your local marine retail store. To protect your boat's finish, be sure to use soaps and cleaners made specifically for boats, or consider mixing your own home-made cleaner-that can be gentler on your boat and better for the environment. If you're tempted to let this chore slide consider this fact: a boat with a clean hull bottom is more fuel-efficient than a hull that's covered with algae or other aquatic scum. A dirty hull can easily add up to an additional 30% of fuel cost. In other words, it makes your boat go faster, and for powerboaters, it saves on the cost of gas.

Don't forget to change your oil. Outboards, inboards and stern drive boats require regular oil changes. The frequency will vary by model, but a good rule of thumb is to change the oil every 100 hours of operation or at least once a year. Fortunately, changing the oil in your boat's engine is pretty easy; sometimes easier than changing the oil in your car. Be sure to use marine grade oil in your boat engine. Boat engines work much harder than car engines and automotive oil isn't made to protect marine engines.

Be sure to check the propeller regularly. Use a deep well socket to make sure the propeller nut is secure. Remove the propeller several times during the season to make sure discarded fishing line hasn't become wrapped around the propeller shaft. If it has, have your dealer inspect the gear case, because fishing line can cause gear case leaks and gear case service is not a do-it-yourself job. While you have the propeller off, inspect it for nicks, dents and other signs of damage. Send it out for repair if you find signs of impact aside from small nicks. The smallest dent can cause your boat to

lose performance and to burn more fuel than normal. Finally, apply a liberal amount of waterproof grease on the propeller shaft and re-install the propeller and hardware in the same order that you took them off, and tighten the propeller nut to the manufacturer's specifications.

3 Tips for Routine Maintenance

California Yacht Marina is committed to water conservation. Port Royal Marina staff has been conserving water this year by cutting back on irrigation and fixing leaks in the facility.

Please check all your hose lines and faucet connectors for leaks or wear. Maintenance staff will fix all broken water lines but boaters are responsible for hoses & connectors.

Please cooperate with us in our efforts to conserve water. Together we can make a difference.

Thanks!

Sam’s Sail Care TipsBy Sam Heck

It is not uncommon to see sails 10 to 15 years old and still seem in good shape. A reasonably well taken care of sail will last 3500-4000 hours. Your sails, they may still be in one piece but the shape has you leaning over more than you are going forward. When the draft blows back and the sail gets fuller and fuller you have a lot of room for improvement at that point. If you use you boat twice a month for 5 months a year your sail will last about 16 yrs. If you sail 12 days a month for 12 months a year you sail will last 2 ½ years. Here are a few tips for keeping your sails lasting a long time.Protect your sails from unnecessary exposure to sunlight – take them down when not in use.Avoid flapping or flogging – this is the worst thing you can do to fabric. When motoring keep the sails down unless you can fill them.Never backwind the genoa against the spreaders while tacking.Use the correct halyard tension. Halyard tension changes as a function of apparent wind velocity. Add tension as the wind increases ( just enough to get the wrinkles out). Ease the halyard when the wind lightens.Protect from chafe. Make sure the spreader and chafe patches are on properly.Take the sails off the boat when not in use or out of the water. Heat, cold and humidity affect the longevity of sails besides getting mildewed.Annually have your sails inspected for wear and washing. This helps the longevity and catches potential problems before they are one.Storesails dry. When leaving the furling sails up, make sure they are furled properly. No candystriping of the genoa and the sheet wrapped twice around the sail in case it gets windy. Main with only the sacrificial cover showing. I see the sails not quite rolled up all the way and a little Dacron showing. It is like leaving your underwear showing! When using electric winches, don’t use the furling line on one winch and the sheet on the other. The electric winches are very strong. You can tear your furler off the bow with it if you are not careful.

1. Candy Striper! Not the ones you see at the hospital.2. Main not furled all the way. There is sail showing! Roll it until you cannot see sail any more.3. Genoa furled properly with 2 wraps around so it does not open when windy.4. Too much electric winch! Remember to ease the furling line before pulling sail out.5. After rolling check to make sure the sail is all covered by the

cover. This sail also is not furled far enough. See, the clew is uncovered when not rolled with a couple of extra wraps

Feel free to call me 310-418-9179 or email me [email protected] if you need any more advice or if I can be of assistance with your sail.
