SE22 Small Encoder
Data Sheet
5V power supply
single ended output
optical model
Description
SE22 is an high performance, low cost, hollow shaft encoder, very easy to assembly on shaft with diameter
ranging from 1.5 mm to 8.0 mm.
According to the model, the device provides one or two (or two plus index) incremental encoding square
wave signals outputs. The device is very suitable for speed and incremental position detection on the
applications requiring high reliability, very good performances, easy and fast assembly and a good
performance/price ratio. The encoder is available with several resolutions, shaft diameters and output
circuits. In the current data sheet the 5V power supply, single ended output, optical model is described.
The encoder is also available with 12÷24V power supply and differential output (line-driver); for aggressive
environments a magnetic model is going to be developed (refer to www.vemtech.it web site for updated
news.

Definitions of terms
Counts per Rotation (CPR): The number of bar and
window pairs or encoder increments per revolution.
One Cycle (C): 360 electrical degrees (°e), one period of
the signal, caused by one pair of bar and window.
Pulse Width (P): The number of electrical degrees with
output high in one cycle; this nominal value is 180 °e.
Pulse Width Error (ΔP): The deviation of pulse width, in
electrical degree, from its ideal value of 180 °e.
State Width (S): The number of electrical degrees
between a transition in the output of channel A and the
closer transition in the output of channel B. There are 4
states per cycle, each nominally 90 °e.
Phase (Φ): The number of electrical degrees between
the centre of the high state of channel A and the center
of the high state of channel B, the nominal value is 90 °e.
Phase Error (ΔΦ): The deviation of phase, in electrical
degree, from its ideal value of 90 °e.
Position Error (ΔQ): The angular difference between the
actual angular shaft position and the position indicated
by the encoder cycle count.

ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTIONS
1
For good encoder performaces the base plate hole
MUST be concentric to the shaft. This assembly
operation is easier by using the “centering gauge”.
3
2
The base plate should be fixed to the flange by using
the accessory screws.
4
Align the housing to the base plate (the black arrow
on the label to be aligned with one of the two snap
fasteners on the flange), move the housing towards
the base plate and the hub centers itself on the
motor shaft.
Press the housing into the final position.
The encoder is now ready for use.

Assembly remarks:
The encoder could be assembled using a mounting boss. Shaft diameters, shaft lenght and tolerances are showed in the
previous tables. FOR ENSURING THE DECLARED ENCODER SIGNAL PERFORMANCES, THE ENCODER BASE PLATE MUST BE
ASSEMBLED CONCENTRIC TO THE SHAFT.
ACCESSORIES
Standard cable length 300 mm (UL1061/AWG28).
Other cables (shielded also) are available on
request.
Centering gauge: to ensure the concentricity
between the encoder base plate and the shaft.
