SDDS Presidents: A HistoryThis Month: Dr.Royce and DickeyDr. Thomas Cromwell Royce was the 12th President of the SDDS in 1882. He was also the Vice President of the SDDS 10 years earlier in 1872. Dr. T.C. Royce was born in Waterloo, NY in 1824. His father Dr. Roderick Royce was a surgeon in the war of 1812 and practiced medicine in Monticello.

Dr. Roderick Royce taught Thomas’s older brother William A. Royce so sufficiently that he was able to attend the Medical College of Fairfield, NY and graduate with a MD degree. William then went on to practice medicine and dentistry in Fishkill on Hudson. After a while he gave up medicine and concentrated only on dentistry when he went to learn from Dr. Eleazar Parmly. He then associated with Dr. Easterly. In 1848 he started a practice in Newburgh, but due to an eyesight accident he retired and gave his practice to Dr. George S. Allen (brother of SDDS 9th president Dr. Charles Allen) who was assisting him for a year. William was also was an associate of his brother Thomas and Dr. L.S Straw (2nd and 19th President of SDDS) in Newburgh. Dr. Thomas Royce read his thesis, “The use of pure tin to solder teeth temporarily and permanently to plates, and as a load to lower jaw setting” at the Baltimore college of dental surgeons in March 1853. He had learned about cast tin bases from his brother William, who was also very inventive. His brother had experimented with an early design for a dental engine and hand piece, and even received a patent for a “pneumatic condenser.” Dr. Thomas C. Royce is listed as the 126th graduate of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgeons. The

same year that Dr. T.C. Royce defended his thesis, his brother William received an honorary D.D.S. degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in recognition for his professional achievements.

In 1854, Dr. T.C. Royce moved to Middletown, New York and began the practice of Dentistry. He was married in 1856 to Anna Louisa Sweet and had a son, Frederick Cromwell Royce and daughter, Elizabeth Aurelia. His son, Dr. Frederick C. Royce, would later go on to become the 45th President of the SDDS. This would make them the first Father – Son presidents in the history of the SDDS. Currently, the only other Father – Son presidents are Dr. Robert Halikias (115th President of the SDDS) and Dr. John Halikias

(125th President of the SDDS).

Dr. Thomas C. Royce was the inventor of the “Royce’s Forcep Beaks” which were forceps used for placing rubber dam clamps. Some of the rubber dam clamps at the time happened to be designed by Dr. Charles Allen (9th president of SDDS)! The rubber dam was discovered in 1864 by Dr. Sandford C. Barnum in Monticello, New York. He used the dam to protect his caries preparation from saliva. This monumental discovery is still so important today.

Before the SDDS was organized, a group of approximately 20 dentists met in Poughkeepsie, New York on March 28th 1867 to start a dental society. This dental society which included dentists from towns

on or near the Hudson River was officially organized on April 25th 1867 as the Hudson River Association of Dental Surgeons. Dr. T.C. Royce was elected its first treasurer. The society would have 3 meetings per year. The Hudson society seemed to take off and by the May 12th 1869’s semiannual meeting at Odd Fellows’ Hall in Poughkeepsie, it was considered one of the “largest and most important dental societies” in New York with membership of about 100 dentists. That year Dr. T.C. Royce was elected their First Vice President and Dr. L. S. Straw (2nd and 19th President of SDDS) was elected their President and Dr. Chas. F. Allen (9th president of SDDS ) their treasurer. The society even sent 5 delegates to represent them at the ADA’s meeting.

Dr. T.C. Royce was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Middletown which he joined in 1863. Dr. Thomas Royce also had a branch office in Monticello and would often visit there with his wife. Dr. Royce died in 1908 at 84 years of age.

Dr. Erskine Dickey

Dr. Erskine Hebert Dickey was the 13th President of the SDDS in 1883. Dr. Dickey was also the vice president of the Brooklyn Dental Society in 1880. He was born in the town of Acworth in Sullivan County New Hampshire on May 25th 1841. Dr. E. H. Dickey was one of nine siblings. His brother John L. Dickey was a dentist in New York City but died at the early age of 23. When Erskine was 21 years old he left his work at the farm and moved to New York to pursue a career in dentistry. In 1862 he moved to Brooklyn.

When the Civil War stormed Dr. Dickey left his home and on January 4th 1864 enlisted for 3 years, but served until the war

ended when he was mustered out on June 16, 1865. He was a Private in the First Regiment New Jersey Light Artillery, Battery B from Newark, New Jersey. This was a very famous Regiment and there are a number of books that mention their bravery and capability in their many battles. Lucky for them they had a good dentist to help alleviate their teeth pain. In the book History and Commercial and Industrial Record of the County of Kings and the City of Brooklyn New York from 1683 to 1864 Volume 2 by Henry R. Stiles. It says; “… Dr. Dickey attended to the needs of the men professionally. Upon a stump, or any other convenient substitute for a dental chair, the patient was seated, the instruments were scattered ready at hand upon the ground and, surrounded by a hundred or more interested spectators, the work of torture began. The Doctor tells his army experiences with pardonable pride; he served his country actively; his professional knowledge was very largely augmented, and into his purse fell day by day from ten to fifteen bright gold dollars.”

After the war he returned to Brooklyn and married Matilda M. Kendall in 1870. She was born in England, and they had two daughters Emma M. and Florance M.

Dr. Erskine H. Dickey was a member of the Brooklyn Board of Education from 1886-1892 and was Vice – President in 1887

and 1888. During his tenure he was on a number of committees. In his last year he was chairman of the Eastern District Library Committee.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Newspaper gives a good timeline account of Dr. Dickey’s political career after being president of the SDDS. He was featured in many issues of the paper and some of the achievements mentioned in the Newspaper were:

Dr. Dickey was a supervisor of elections for the primaries of the Democratic General Committee held in 1878 and 1879. On Sept. 8th 1888 Dr. Dickey was appointed to a committee to procure suitable Headquarters for the 13th Ward Democratic association.

That same year Dr. Dickey was

also elected delegate to the General Committee of the 13th Ward. Dec. 4th 1888 The Brooklyn Daily Eagle announced that Dr. Erskine Dickey would run against 3 others for president of the 13th Ward Democratic Association. (Dr. Dickey won the election.)

On May 28, 1889 the newspaper wrote in support of Dr. Dickey, who was President of the 13th ward Democratic Association, for reappointed to the Board of Education stating that “Mr. Dickey is a dentist, a hard student and devoted to the interests of the schools”. The members of the Brooklyn Board of Education were elected for three years without salary by the Mayor of New York. Dr. Dickey was initially appointed to a three-year term by the previous Mayor Whitney of Brooklyn. Each year the Mayor was allowed to appoint 15 members and the paper noted that the Mayor’s term was only two years, which would mean that he could effectively replace most of

the board to continue his agenda way past his term as Mayor. The current Mayor Chapin had not yet made a decision whether to reappoint him at that time.

July 3, 1889: Four school principals of the Eastern District wrote to Mayor Chapin about how happy they were to have Erskine H. Dickey reappointed to the Brooklyn Board of Education.

Feb. 6, 1891: Dr. Dickey gave a short address to the attendees of the closing exercises of Evening High School. The Eagle reported that Dr. Dickey was well known.

In 1892, the new Mayor Boody did not reappoint Dr. Dickey to the Board of Education. However, this did not deter Dr. Dickey in his political pursuits. In 1893 he won Royce’s Forceps published in the Dental Cosmos 1873.

2012 SDDS CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE LISTING

Fort Hamilton Community Club, Brooklyn, NY Friday, November 8, 20126:30 PM MCEU - 1 HOUR

Title: “Dental Management of Patients with Cardiac Disease”

Clinician: Miriam R. Robbins, D.D.S., M.S. Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, New York University College of Dentistry

Synopsis:Eighty-one million people in the United States have one or more forms of car-diovascular disease (CVD). The number of cardiovascular patients presenting in dental offices is increasing and treating patients with CVD is increasingly complex. Cardiovascular patients require special consideration with regard to when and which dental treatment is appropriate and what precautions are required. By un-derstanding the risks for these patients and the implications of relevant treatment and drugs, dental professionals can provide dental care tailored to the individiual patient’s circumstances that is both safe and effective.

This presentation will review what practical information is needed in order to ar-rive at a medical risk assessment to develop management strategies in the delivery of dental care to these patients. It will focus on how to incorporate medical man-agement decisions into the dental treatment planning, interactions and adverse ef-fects of commonly prescribed medications and recognition and management of medical emergencies in the dental office related to cardiovascular disease.

Upon successful completion of this lecture, attendees will:

• Learn the current guidelines for managing patients with cardiovascular disease and hypertension who require dental treatment

• Understand how to arrive at a medical risk assessment for a patient with car-diovascular disease

• Be familiar with the related pharmacology of medications commonly used to treat patients with these disorders and the impact of those medications from the perspective of the dental professional

• Recognize the possible adverse interactions between medications used for car-diac diseases and drugs prescribed by dentists

Title: “Surgical Treatment Planning Strategies with Aesthetics in Mind”

Clinician: Edgard S. El Chaar, D.D.S., M.S. Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, New York University College of Dentistry

Synopsis:In the past 25 years, the focus in dentistry has changed gradually from the busi-ness of repair to very sophisticated comprehensive treatment which is more focused on aesthetics. As we know, aesthetics relates psychologically to a pa-tient’s mind as beauty. Knowing the parameters of aesthetics by a surgeon is crucial in order to provide the restorative dentist an adequate result to build on, particularly for dental implants in the anterior. The latter requires different phi-losophies in treatment planning that mix aesthetics, function, well being and psychological demand tailored for each patient individually. Short of studying and understanding the case, the results can be disastrous clinically.

This course will review fundamental esthetic principles that are crucial for sur-gical planning and provide in-depth coverage of the various modalities, such as grafting, as well as new technologies that can optimize clinical esthetics and outcomes. Participants will learn about esthetic criteria, esthetic crown lengthening, soft tissue coverage, bone grafting material and immediate im-plant placement. Complex cases will be reviewed and attendees will also learn a predictable technique in soft tissue management combining soft tissue to hard tissue augmentation, either for conventional esthetic dentistry or for ideal im-plant placement.

FDA Issues Recall Alert on Nitrous Oxide Delivery System

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week issued a "Class I" recall alert on Accutron, Inc.'s Ultra PC% cabinet mount flowmeters for nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation systems. The agency's safety alert and recall notice are available at the FDA web site.

According to the FDA, Accutron, which voluntarily recalled its flowmeters, reported two consumer complaints that the devices continued to deliver nitrous oxide even when the oxygen flow was turned off. No injuries have been reported.

The FDA's recall notice states: "Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall and involve situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of these products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

Dentists who suspect problems with this flowmeter should report them to Accutron at 1-800- 531-2221 and to the FDA via its MedWatch program. Accutron will replace the device free of charge

Section 22: Oral Health CommitteeA. Composition: This Committee shall consist of the Chair and at least twenty (20) members, at least one of whom shall be from the Branch Societ-ies. Each year at the an-nual election, five members shall be appointed, each to serve for a term of four years. B. Duties: It shall be the duty of this committee to serve as the oral health education agency of this Society.

the Democratic primary for Supervisor of the 13th Ward (which used to be part of Williamsburg). “The Board of Supervisors of Kings County was the legislative body governing Kings County, New York. Taxes, bonds, and other county related laws were passed by the Board of Supervisors so long as the laws did not conflict with state or federal laws. A board member was elected from each ward in Kings County and an elected supervisor-at-large presided over the board. The supervisor-at-large had the power to veto the resolutions of the board.” (Brooklyn Historical Society guide to the Board of Supervisors of Kings County Collection ARC.049)

I’d like to thank Mr. Andy McCar thy, Re fe rence Librarian with the Brooklyn Historical Society who clarified the Supervisor position with the following

continued from page 3information: The Supervisor held office for two years. The Daily Eagle Almanac describes the office as a legislative body with the “power to pass laws on all county matters.” 34 members are headed by the elected Supervisor-at-large, who can “veto the resolutions of the Board,” and has “the power of appointment of the Board of Charities and Corrections.”

Wards at the time were political regions, but were eliminated in 1938. The Wards could also elect their own Alderman and Assistant Alderman to the City Council. In 1898 when Brooklyn was merged into New York City as one of the five boroughs there were 32 Wards.

On Oct. 29, 1893 Dr. Erskine Dickey’s picture was depicted in the paper as a candidate for supervisor of the 13th ward. Dr.

Dickey wound up losing the election to Joseph Enderlin the republican candidate who was born in France and was in the steam engineering business. This seemed to put a stop to Dr. Dickey’s political career. If any one has any more information on his service to Brooklyn please email me at [email protected]

Dr. Dickey was also involved in other leadership positions. He was a Mason and is listed as an officer (Grand Principal Sojourner 1886-1888) of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of N.Y. and a Past Eminent Commander (1878) of Dewitt Clinton Commandery no. 27. He was elected Dictator of Dewitt Clinton Lodge, n igh ts of Honor, and appointed District Deputy Grand Dictator for the Second District in 1880.H e w a s a l s o a p a s t Commander of the Grand
