1. HISTORY

Although the Pythagorean philosopher Archytas of Tarentum(5th century BC) is the alleged inventor of the screw, theexact date of its first appearance as a useful mechanicaldevice is obscure.

Though invention of the water screw is usually ascribed toArchimedes (3rd century BC), evidence exists of a similardevice used for irrigation in Egypt at an earlier date. Thescrew press, probably invented in Greece in the 1st and 2ndcentury BC, has been used since the days of the RomanEmpire for pressing clothes.

In the 1st century AD, wooden screws were used in wine andolive oil presses, and cutters (taps) for cutting internalthreads were in use.

2. GENERAL TERMS

Screw In machine construction, a usually circular cylindricalmember with a continuous helical rib, used either as a fastener oras a force or motion modifier.

Bolt Mechanical fastener that is usually used with a nut forconnecting two or more parts. A bolted joint can be readily

disassembled and reassembled.The bolt consists of a head and a cylindrical body screw threadsalong a portion of its length.

Nut is the female member of the pair, having internal threads tomatch those of the bolt.

Washers machine component that is used in conjunction with a

screw fastener such as bolt and nut. Usually serves either to keepthe screw from loosening or to distribute the load from the nut orbolt head over a large area. Thin flat rings of soft steel are usual.
