2012 Spec Market Scorecardas of September 15, 2012

Yawn. Another month goes by, another dozen or so spec sale notches on the board. Ho hum, right? Wrong -- we’re three and a half years into this gig and we still get goosebumps when we see big numbers like the 11 spec sales over the past four weeks, especially since it should have been one of the slowest periods of the year.

In fact, the market has been so good it’s put us in a “let us count the ways” frame of mind. Here are our favorite three:

• Three studios’ spec purchase totals are at five year highs (Paramount, Universal and Sony).

• Last year at this time, 66 specs had sold, including 6 busted specs from previous years. This year, we’re already at 97, including 23 busted specs from previous years, a 47% increase year-over-year.

• Every agency except ICM (which dramatically cut back its MP Lit department this year) is ahead of where it was at this point in 2011. And none more so than WME, which has already sold more specs in 2012 (25) then it did in the whole of 2011 (23).

And that doesn’t even include last week’s three high profile, million dollar spec sales to Sony and Universal.

The big question now is whether the Fall selling season will be as strong as last year. October 2011’s tally (20 spec sales) is going to make it tough to beat, but there are a couple of hopeful signs: DreamWorks reportedly bid on David Guggenheim’s hot spec last week (“Black Box,” which went to Universal), so we could see them in the mix again before the end of the year; and Fox started an executive shuffle last week which should result in a couple of splashy sales by Thanksgiving.

We’ll see what happens. In the meantime, happy New Year, everyone. Enjoy the grids.
