The Scoggins Report by Jason Scoggins & Cindy Kaplan January 14, 2013 2012 Year-End Pitch Sales Scorecard Welcome to our second annual Year-End Pitch Sales Scorecard. As usual, it was fun to compile, but we have to admit it’s nice to have this puppy behind us: Last year, buyers picked up a total of 81 pitches, down nearly 24% from 2011‘s total of 106. We’re looking forward to turning our attention to the Year-End Spec Market Scorecard next week, since that seems to be what the studios did in 2012 as well. Like last year, this edition of the Scoggins Report combines our Pitch Scorecard and Pitch Roundups into one document covering the whole of 2012. We’ve inserted our year-over-year analysis into each Scorecard section below, which are followed by the Roundup sections, including the full year’s Weekly Activity Breakdown and an alphabetical list of each of 2012’s pitch sales, along with each project’s details. So let’s get straight to it. The following are the Top 5 Pitch Buyers and Sellers of 2012. The number of sales for each company or person is to the right of their names. Top 5 Buyers 1. The Scoggins Report is a terribly unscientific analysis of the feature film development business based on information assembled from a variety of public and non-public sources. The numbers in the reports are by no means official statistics. Caveat emptor. Molṑn labé.

2012 Year-EndPitch Sales Scorecard

Welcome to our second annual Year-End Pitch Sales Scorecard.

Pitch Sales By Buyer - StudiosThe primary cause of the year-over-year drop in pitch sales is visible at a glance in the below grid. Nearly every studio that bought pitches in 2011 bought fewer in 2012, including six of 2011’s buyers who didn’t buy any in 2012. Only New Line bought more pitches in 2012 than 2011, and only Disney and New Regency were on par year-over-year.

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Total 2011 Columbia 2 3 1 1 7 9 Disney 1 3 1 2 2 9 9 DreamWorks 1 1 2 Fox 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 8 Fox Searchlight 1 1 0 Lionsgate 1 1 0 MGM 1 1 0 New Line 2 1 1 1 5 4 New Regency 1 1 2 2 Paramount 1 3 1 1 1 1 1 9 12 Universal 1 1 1 3 1 1 3 11 12 Warner Bros. 2 1 3 1 1 1 2 11 13

The studios that bought pitches in 2011 but not 2012 were: CBS Films, Dimension, Focus, Fox 2000, Sony Pictures Animation and Summit (which has since merged with Lionsgate, which didn’t buy any pitches in 2011). Those six companies bought a total of 9 pitches in 2011.

Here are the combined pitch and spec purchase numbers for studios that have bought at least one of each. Names in bold are new since the last scorecard:

Pitch Sales by Seller - AgenciesAs dominant as WME was among the agencies in 2012, even it ended up shy of its 2011 pitch sale tally thanks to the studios’ reduced appetite in 2012. Only Paradigm improved its performance year-over-year, jumping into the 5th place spot occupied by Gersh in 2011. UTA came in third behind WME and CAA, swapping spots with last year’s third place agency, ICM.

Pitch Sales by Seller - Management CompaniesThe list of the top 5 management companies changed quite a bit from 2011 to 2012. Three of 2011‘s top companies -- Circle of Confusion, Management 360 and Mosaic -- were on par year-over-year and made the list for the second year in a row in 2012. But 2011‘s top two management companies, Madhouse and Anonymous, were replaced by Energy and Principato-Young in 2012.
