The Scoggins Report is a terribly unscientific analysis of the feature film development business based on information assembled from a variety of public and non-public sources. June 2013Pitch Market Scorecard

Wed already planned to read Lynda Obsts new book, Sleepless in Hollywood: Tales From the New Abnormal in the Movie Business, but after stumbling across this excerpt in Salon we immediately clicked through to Amazon. If you havent read the article already, do -- it not only corroborates the patterns weve been seeing in the spec and pitch markets this year, it (read: Peter Chernin) explains why several studios seem to be frozen in indecision (in the last four paragraphs in particular).

Wondering which studios Chernin alludes to? Look no further than the chart on page 4, below. And if you think hes being overly loyal to Fox when he says theyre not still struggling with the same problem, he isnt, as you can see in the same grid. Fox and Universal are on pace to buy their New Abnormal number of specs and pitches this year.

To connect the dots (and reading between the lines), Obst suggests the New Abnormal crystallized in 2012, but only a couple of studios have adjusted to the new program. You can see the same dynamic on the sell side, too -- most companies, including CAA, are still struggling to find their footing, while a few, such as WME have already adapted.

The poster boy for the New Abnormal on the sell side, though, is clearly Brooklyn Weaver, whose Energy Entertainment had a terrific 2012 and is already poised to surpass those numbers in 2015, as you can see from the grid on page 9. We have our fingers crossed that the rest of the business follows suit in a hurry.
