Mission Planning Perth maintenance in October 2007:
Dongara used as replacement rev 1431-1445
Several problems (didn’t work as expected)
Heavy re-scheduling & several gaps
~ 110h lost near apogee

Instrument Operations RGS2 single node readout, since rev. 1408: 16 Aug 2007
● Pile-up: if strong emission lines: higher than expected● Radiation monitoring not possible with RGS2 (under
investigation)
OM: review of slew constraints● Possibility to reduce by 2 (current: Earth 10°, Moon 7°)
Slow Slew Survey● Slowest slows 5°/h using close loop slews (20s+2-4° slews)● Overhead (time between slews and RWB) under
investigation
EPIC: action from UG: 2007-06-07/14: On the EPIC team to report on the impact of reducing the overhead for EPIC-pn thin, medium and thick filter exposures in modified mosaicing mode, by using a fixed offset table

SAS & XSA SAS 7.1 released in July 2007
● Patch: eexpmap● Patch to be released this week
• rgsframes (for single node)• arfgen / backscale - support for masks - asked by users• epreject upgrade• some very minor fixes (test lines printouts suppression + inclusion of
forgotten parameter change in rgsproc) ● Next release : ~ end spring 2008, with:
epic_lccorr, rgs analysis using wavelength grid, and will be (most probably) based on gcc4 and include version for 64 bit machines.
XSA 4.0 released in August 2007● Full, uniform, reprocessing ● Science products● 2XMM catalogue: 360□ :247000 det., ~192000 unique
• ~ 6x10-15 cgs in soft 0.2-2 keV (typical sensitivity)• ~1.5x10-14 cgs in hard 0.2-2 keV
● Slew Survey catalogue 1.1: 20% of sky, ~4300 sources● Next release in ~ March 2008: dedicated to OM

Users FeedbacK: UG recommendations
Recommendation 2007-06-08/39: The priority for timing modes of EPIC-pn needs to be focused on solving the current problems of the timing and burst calibration. Only after they are fixed, the UG would be glad to revise its recommendation about the modified timing. For the time being, the modified timing mode should only be made available on a case by case basis(Policies and Procedures updated for AO7)
Recommendation 2007-06-08/45: The UG recommends that the Background Working Group makes a study of the needs for closed filter data

Mission Extension
Both AWG and SSAC recommended XMM-Newton extension up to end 2012. Decision on the 13th of November, SPC
ASTRO(2007)16 Paris, 11th October 2007
EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY
ASTRONOMY WORKING GROUP
Recommendation on the extension of Operation
of the INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton missions
At its 129th meeting held on 9-10 October 2007 at ESA Headquarters, Paris (France), the Astronomy Working Group (AWG) was briefed on the scientific returns and status of the Integral and XMM-Newton missions as well as the Executive’s plan to combine and simplify aspects of their operations, resulting in the financial savings compatible with the recommendations from the SPRT. The AWG was asked to express a view of the scientific performance of the missions and to recommend on the proposed mission extensions until the end of 2012. This is a further 2 years beyond the current approved interval for Integral and 2.75 years for XMM-Newton. The AWG expressed its satisfaction with the current status and science return of the Integral and XMM-Newton missions. The AWG noted that the concept of combined operations provides strongly reduced costs, compared to previous extensions, with an acceptable small initial reduction in the high scientific performance of both missions. Integral continues to provide a powerful capability to explore extreme phenomena in the Universe and XMM-Newton is expected to maintain its world-class scientific profile over the time period under consideration. Therefore, the AWG highly recommends approval of the 2-year and 2.75-year rolling extensions and expects to review the science case for the 2011-2012 time frame as part of any further extension requests.
