SOUNDTRACK INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATIONS

This course examines the tools and advanced techniques of composing music scores for motion pictures. Students will learn a combination of practical, technical, and aesthetic skills in support of creating an effective music score that reinforces the emotional content of the visual imagery. Practical methods of scoring will be demonstrated, as well as creating an effective demo reel.

MUSIC SCORING FOR FILM

In this course, students will use more advanced techniques to compose music for visual media. Students will integrate MIDI with audio and use plug-ins to create a compelling mix. Techniques for mixing in surround sound will be introduced and tempo mapping to stay in sync with picture will be emphasized.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

This course surveys the soundtrack industry and provides students with fundamental music and sound design terminology and theory necessary to critically listen to and discuss music scores and sound designs. Topics will include soundtrack components, music notation, dialog, effects, Foley, and the relationship of music and sound to story narrative.

This course introduces students to digital audio workstation technology, which is at the heart of the modern audio production workflow. Industry standard software will be covered, including techniques to record, edit, process, and mix soundtrack elements into a cohesive whole.

Images need music to fully convey the depths of their emotion: the shower scene from Psycho, the beach scene from Chariots of Fire, level one of Super Mario Bros. Ask anyone to imagine this visual media without their respective scores, and you’ll see how vital the role of the composer is. Film, television, video games, and the Internet have turned the world into one big concert stage, and today’s musicians need to have the technological savvy to compose for it.

ABHISHEK GHOSH BFA student

“After graduating from my high school in India, I was looking at many universities around the world for my undergraduate studies. I found a lot of good audio engineering schools and a lot of historic music conservatories. But when I came to San Francisco for a family vacation and found out about the Music program here at the Academy of Art University, it was just perfect for me.

“The course here offers both the production and the composition side. I was able to connect with some of my instructors on a personal level and they were really helpful to me. I even got to intern with one of my instructors here. Brad, the director of the department, has been a mentor for me from day one. Dirk, the associate director of the department, has also been my mentor.

“In my four years here, I gained a lot of practical, real-world experience which is really helping me now that I’m working professionally in the industry as a composer. To say the least, I’ve had an amazing four years here.”

We inspire and motivate students to cultivate their unique voice as an artist. Students develop a portfolio that demonstrates a personal style and a high level of technical skills, preparing them for a professional career. The spirit of imagination, creativity, skill, and intense commitment flourishes. We are already seeing the results.

THEO NOGUEIRA DA MATTA BFA ’16

“I have been at the Academy for almost five years now. I came here because I have been studying music since I was seven years old and I realized I wanted to compose for visual media and not only for concert halls. I had studied Orchestral Conducting in Brazil, where I’m from, for two and a half years and changed gears coming here, where everything changed. I love San Francisco and I enjoyed a lot of my time at this school. I believe I learned so much and got so much hands-on experience that I can get into any job that is related to audio.

“Even though I had full training in classical music beforehand, being at the Academy, I learned the other side of things. I learned how to produce, create sound effects, record, signal flow, and even mixing. I believe I opened my range of job opportunities radically and now I feel prepared to face whatever comes my way.

“I loved my Orchestration classes, including MIDI Orchestration, my Scoring for Games, and Scoring for Film classes, plus all the collaborations I did at the Academy, because they provided me with the experience that I will be facing in a real job.

“I believe coming to the Academy was the best decision of my life. I learned a lot in here and I feel prepared for what comes next.”

I had the opportunity to work at One Union Recording Studio as an intern. During the internship, I was able to sit in on mixing sessions with engineers and learn everything that goes into it from the start to finish until they complete the project. I am not only learning technical skills, but also had a chance to observe the lead engineer in the session. Very great experience!

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.

Online Education

Our revolutionary online courses provide the same rigorous education that we offer on campus with greater flexibility. Study on your own time, at your own pace. Take full- or part-time classes. Let nothing stand in your way of pursuing your creative goals.

BONNIE PANGMFA, School of Illustration

The program’s flexibility gives me great freedom to manage my time, work on side projects, and even come to study abroad for the summer semester!
