CriteriaforFulfillingtheCASForeignLanguageGraduationRequirement(EffectiveApril2014)

1.TosatisfytheForeignLanguageGraduationRequirementintheCollegeofArtsandSciencesstudentsarerequiredtodemonstrateproficiencyinallfourlanguageskills,i.e.listening,speaking,writingandreadingatanovice-midlevel(e.g.,SPAN102)forEuropeanlanguages(suchasFrench,German,Italian,Portuguese,Spanish)oratanovice-lowlevelforCharacter-Basedlanguages(suchas,Chinese,Japanese,Russian)accordingtoACTFLstandards.

Todemonstratetherequiredproficiency,studentsmaysubmitproofofavarietyofpossibleforeignlanguageexperiencestotheacademicadvisorwhowillthennotifythegraduationsareatoinputtheexception.

Atpresent,thebasicCASgraduationrequirement,whichdirectlyreflectstheWashingtonStateBoardofEducationcollegeadmissionsrequirements(revisedJanuary2013)basedontheWashingtonHigherEducationCommitteeguidelines,is:

Note:AFLcoursetakeninmiddleschoolmaysatisfyoneyearoftherequirementifthesecondyeariscompletedinhighschool.Ifonlyoneyeariscompletedinhighschool(grades9-12),aWSUstudentmustcompleteanadditionalsemesterortransferanadditionalcollege-levelquarterorsemesterinthesameforeignlanguageatthe102level.

TheCollegeofArtsandScienceshasdeterminedthatForeignLanguageProficiencynotbasedonHSorcollegeinstructioncanalsobedemonstratedbysubmittingdocumentationthatprovesoneofthefollowing:

• PassingtheStandards-basedMeasurementofProficiency(STAMP)testwithaminimumscoreof2ormoreinallthreesectionsforEuropeanlanguages,oraminimumscoreof1inallsectionsforCharacter-basedlanguages.1
