Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Dear Parents and Guardians, Multicultural Day Thank you to the parent community for supporting our wonderful multicultural day last Friday. Thank you to Ms. Delas, Mrs. Kyriacou, Mrs. Mendham and Nola for overseeing the organisation of the event and to all staff for your overwhelming support for the day. It was a huge success shared by all members of the GWPS community. Our School Community We are so lucky to live and work in the wonderful community of Glenroy West. We are fortunate to have so many kind and caring volunteers who contribute so much to our school. Many come every week to work with individual students or small groups. As well, we have some very hard working parents who work tirelessly on school council, during school and out of hours. They work on fundraising, buildings and grounds, canteen, Mother’s and Father’s day stalls. Many parents help in classrooms, with reading and on excursions. Many parents come as guest speakers to share their knowledge and experience in an area of interest helping children make connections with their inquiry. Quite a few of our parents help their children locate artefacts to enrich learning. We have so many people helping our school and we are grateful for their involvement and contribution. Please let us know if you can contribute in some way. You will be most welcome.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED- IF YOU CAN VOLUNTEER SOME TIME ON A WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY OR FRIDAY, PLEASE SPEAK TO Mrs. Anne Kyriacou. A WORKING WITH CHILDRENS CHECK is required alternatively we can assist you with this process. Principal Preparation Program- Shadowing Program Welcome to Melanie McLennan from Albert Park Primary School. Melanie will be at GWPS for two blocks of 2 weeks shadowing Pam as an intern for the Principal Preparation program. If you met Melanie please make her feel welcome.

100 Days Celebration Last week our Foundation students celebrated their 100th day at school. In particular, it is amazing to see the amount of learning our children have achieved in 100 days. I am positive all the children and staff enjoyed their day of celebration and discussed the activities they engaged in to help them understand the properties of 100. Book Week Celebrations Details will be sent home however we are giving advanced notice that we will be having a book week parade and dress up day on Tuesday 21st August. Children are encouraged to choose a character and come to school wearing something that represents a character. The theme is ‘find Your Treasure’. We will have a parade and in classes the teachers and students will be discussing the beauty of books and how they enrich our lives in so many ways. 2018 Celebrations Our 60th birthday celebrations, will be held on Tuesday 14th August 2018. To date, we have organised an Opening Ceremony, an invitation, Market stalls organised by the students, past students and special visitors, photo display, local member and afternoon tea. 2018 PARENT OPINION SURVEY We want our parents to tell us what they think! Please complete the survey before August 26th. Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion survey is an annual survey offered by DET that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30% of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 23/7- Sunday 26/8. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. NEW PREPS FOR 2019 Our Transition program begins this week for new Prep students for 2019. The transition from Kindergarten to school is such an important step and we believe providing as much exposure as possible for our new Prep students. The first transition session begins on Tuesday 24th July at 11am. All students enrolled should be participating in the K-P program. Please speak to Mrs. Kyriacou (Assistant Principal) for further information or the office. Student Enrolments for 2019 It is very pleasing that high interest is regularly shown at our school. Prospective parents have already begun making enquiries about 2019 places for Foundation students. Enquiries will continue throughout the year and will come from local families, those looking to move into the area and, families from much further afield. Through these encounters, we gain feedback about Glenroy West and information which clearly indicates that our learning environment and practices are held in high regard. Foundation for 2019 This is very important information not just for current parents who will have another child beginning foundation in 2019 but for all members of our school community. Our enrolment policy and how decisions are made about admission to Glenroy West Primary School is public information and as such is detailed in newsletters, information sessions and on our website. CELEBRATING MULTICULTURAL DAY

Last Friday, Glenroy West hosted one of their favourite events of the year - Multicultural Day. The day kicked off

with a fantastic parade that welcomed the York Street Kindergarten children and the Parent and Friends Play

Group to the event. It was great to see students, parents, teachers and friends dressed up in their national

costume or clothing from different countries all over the world. The teachers and their class show-cased their

traditional attire, walking to a variety of National Anthems of the chosen countries for the day.

Excited students then moved into their multi-age groupings, moving to different classrooms, rotating through a

variety of hands on and engaging activities, including the making of Greek olive wreaths, Indonesian puppets,

Spanish maracas and fans, Vietnamese hats, North American necklaces, practising Indian Yoga and playing Filipino

games. It was wonderful to see older students supporting and building relationships with the younger students

and interacting with someone new.

The highlight was the coming together for lunch in the hall. The mouth-watering smells from dishes from all

corners of the globe wafted through the air. Our parents, staff and friends certainly put on a feast for the

students and community. At the end of the day, there was a buzz in the air, with passing chitter chatter about

countries students had learnt about and activities they enjoyed when students were walking home. It was

obvious to see the day was a hit.

Multicultural day was a wonderful day to celebrate, learn, appreciate and value our differences, our uniqueness

and the customs, traditions and cultures of others. The coming together as a community demonstrates the

strength and respect we have for each other. The school would like to thank Den Mendham for all her work with

the multi-age groupings, the leadership team for their support in organising the day, the staff for their hard work

and enthusiasm, Nola for setting up lunch and the many parents who gave up their time and volunteered to

assist in classrooms and those who brought food on the day. Your time, support, help and generosity was

invaluable.

MULTICULTURAL DAY RECOUNTS BY

FOUNDATION STUDENTS At school we had Multicultural Day. We went to the hall. I made bracelets. After I painted the boomerangs. After

I ate food. At lunchtime I played with my friends. And then I made a crown. I made a name tag. I ate lots of food.

The food was yummy. I ate fairy bread. I ate chicken nuggets. My favourite thing was the food because it was

yummy.

the leaf crown. In the hall, we had spring rolls. I was in group 9. I was with Adhya. I loved Multicultural Day.

RECOUNTS AND A MESSAGE FROM THE GRADE

1/2 TEAM On Friday 3rd August we celebrated our Multicultural Day. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day where

students took part in activities from around the world, such as, Japanese origami, Australian

boomerangs, Chinese calligraphy, Indian henna, Egyptian cartouches, games from the Philippines and

Indonesian puppets. Following our activities we all celebrated by having a shared lunch with a variety of

different foods from around the world. We would like to thank all parents for their contribution and

presence on the day.

The grade 3/4 team have been inquiring into celebrations, traditions and festivals around the world.

During their investigations, the 3/4 students have found symbolism to play an important role in

traditions and cultural celebrations all around the world. Reflecting on Multicultural Day, students

created their symbols to represent what they day means to them. What is Multicultural Day?

Today we went to different classes.

I loved making the boomerang. The part I loved was the pearl colours. It was amazing. I tried my

I liked my buddy but I forgot her name. She is nice and her name starts with ‘L’ and she was

dressed to represent India.

Today on Multicultural Day all of the students in the whole school were in different classes. I enjoyed

painting the boomerang. I also like the henna, it’s spectacular.

We had food from different countries in the hall. When it was lunch, Guney said, “I am so hungry.”

I said to Guney, “I am hungry too. I want some food.”

Oops, my tummy rumbled. The last grade was our grade. Finally we got to eat.

First we put rice in a plastic egg. Then we taped two spoons on either side of the egg. It was

SAME DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES All parents and guardians can access COMPASS to log student absence or otherwise contact the school directly or via the school email glenroywestps.@edumail.vic.gov.au PLEASE READ THE DET FACT SHEET BELOW Fact sheet for parents/Carers, If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods-

1. Online Compass

2. Telephone the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absence and reason

3. Email the school and provide the same information as stated above.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent? Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian Government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily attendance. Going to school daily is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day- missing schools puts them behind. What is your responsibility? You are legally required to ensure your child attends school daily or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences. In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide the school with your most up to date contact details. What is the school’s responsibility? The school must notify you of an unexplained absence in relation to your child as soon as practicable on the same day. EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement.
