Takaka and District War Memorial and Gardens Opening On Saturday a group of our children formed part of a choir to sing at the opening of the Takaka and District War Memorial and Gardens in town. It was a great experience for the children who were required to march with the band and the various armed and service forces. The children sang well and were respectful through the one and a half hour service. Thanks to the Rhys W, Tane, Iris, Lily, Rhianne, Alex, Rosie and William for volunteering to be part of the choir. School Concert We are currently putting the finishing touches on all the concert items and looking forward to heading to the Playhouse next week to see how they go on the real stage. There will be quite a bit of travel between the school and the playhouse as we try to familiarize the children with the stage setting and coordinating prop changes and positioning. A huge thanks to those who have helped out with costumes and props they look really awesome and help the children really get into role. Tickets We have allowed a week for parents to get limited tickets so that everyone who wishes, gets the opportunity to go to an evening show. From tomorrow morning, Friday 6 November, parents can purchase extra tickets if they wish. The evening shows are already well booked with plenty of spaces still available at the matinee performances. Swimming Pool The pool has been emptied and cleaned and is now drying out ready for a paint. Once painted we need to leave it for a week to cure before filling. If anyone has a spare hour on Saturday morning from 10.15 am to help out with painting the pool please let me know.

Golden Bay Schools’ Soccer Tournament Last Friday our Year 3-6 children headed out to the various schools to take part in the Golden Bay Schools’ Soccer Tournament. All our children were required to take part. A number of children stood out, not just those through their Ability, but others through their determination and the effort they put in for their team. Our teams did very well winning the Year 5/6 boys grade, Year 5/6 Girls grade and the Year 3 /4 boys grade. Thanks to all those parents who helped out with transport and managing teams on the day, your help is much appreciated.

Hiwi the Kiwi Yesterday our school was treated to a visit from The Minstrel and his “Hiwi the Kiwi” show with his sustainable fishing message. He played the guitar and sang to us, inviting us to join in with his words and actions. He got a lot of the chil-

dren to come out the front and contribute to his show. All children left knowing more about fishing for the future and

how we need to speak out and educate parents. Here are some things we learnt: Always pick up fish with a wet towel—Joe

Never take home fish too big or too small—Amalie

Use salt ice to keep fish fresher—Emily

Always wear a life jacket—Rian

Never fish in a Marine Reserve. Call the police if you see people fishing in a marine reserve as it is theft—Holley

Always measure the fish first before you take them home - Bayleigh

Always carry flares on your boat—Lily

Part of the Hiwi the Kiwi package was the purchase of ten books for our library and a subscription to the N.Z. Fishing Magazine. He also donated a fishing rod with a disco reel, to be a prize for a school wide writing competition for the

best fishing story. The winner gets the rod and reel and gets their story published in the N.Z. Fishing Magazine.
