Discovering Arbutus Cove Date: Tuesday, May 6 Time: 12:05 to 1:00 pm Location: Outside Campus Security Host: Rebecca Chow (HUMR) Come and discover this little know gem of a sandy beach just steps from the UVIC campus. This walk is approximately 3.5 kilometers and includes walking on sand and stairclimbing. This tour leaves from outside Campus Security. Ring Ramble Date: Tuesday, May 13 Time: Noon – 1:00 pm Location: Petch Fountain Host: David Brown (LIBR) Curious about the history of the UVIC campus? Come put some steps on your pedometer and learn a few tidbits about the major buildings around campus. This tour is fully accessible. Join the BUSI Walkers Dates: Every Tuesday in May Time: Noon – 1:00 pm Location: BEC & David Strong Breezeway Host: Heather Ranson (BUSI) Heather will lead a 4 km walk that includes the Sinclair Hill. Prizes*: Celebrating our First & second month April 26 - $75.00 Gift Certificate & May 26 - Leki Spin Nordic walking poles from FRONTRUNNERS. To qualify for these random draws, you must be a UVIC student, faculty or staff member and have logged steps within the last seven days of the draw date. Events: Exploring your fitness personality profile Date: Thursday, May 15 Time: Noon – 1 pm Location: David Strong C112 Host: Rebecca Chow (HUMR) Ever wondered why you stick with some activities but not others? Come and explore Dr. James Gavin’s work on “fitness personality” and learn how to use the seven (7) psychosocial traits to identify activities that you are more likely to find satisfying, and therefore stick to doing. Nordic Pole Walking Demonstration Date: To be confirmed Time: Noon – 2 pm Location: McKinnon Gym Hosts: FRONTRUNNERS & VIKES Rec. Nordic Walking is a way to improve cardiovascular stamina while engaging up to 90% of your muscles. Pole walkers have reported reductions in muscle tension and pain in their neck and shoulder regions, greater mobility of their neck and spine, and increased safety when walking on slippery surfaces (International Nordic Walking Association). Come join FRONTRUNNERS and VIKES Recreation to learn more. Charting your course – with GIS Mapping Date: Thursday, May 29 Time: Noon – 1pm Location: BEC 160 (Computer Lab) Host: Rebecca Chow (HUMR) Ever wondered how to get somewhere using back roads or the paths at the end of cul-de-sacs. Would you like to know how to get from A to B without walking/cycling up the BIG hill or on the busy road. This session will show you how to use on-line mapping tools from Saanich and CRD.
