Heralding local business last month was Becky McCallum of Boomac Interior Design. In a bid to harness local and creative talent under one roof, she hosted a very friendly and welcoming open day at her beautiful house in Chislehurst. The three floors of the Edwardian mega-house provided the perfect backdrop to display the sumptuous and covetable wares of the day ranging from artwork to earrings. Each room was dedicated to a theme with luxurious fabric offcuts in one dwelling and wallpapers from the likes of Sanderson and bespoke furniture from Louis Baron in another. The fashionable plethora of yumminess on offer came with individual flair and an affordable price tag to boot which pleased the punters somewhat. Dee, a local resident said: “ I’m in my element. I’ve just come from the gym...of course I should be elsewhere but I cant resist the nick nacks, I’m loving it! I’ve bought loads for a fraction of the price!”.

filmCoolioGlamorous guests braved the cold and stormy weather in leafy Chislehurst last month to settle down to a stylish three course meal provided by a team of service- savvy waiting staff at, The Bickley, Chislehurst. The Bickley played host to a black tie film and charity event, hosted by up and coming production company, Film Coolio, in aid of Nordoff Robbins, a life-changing charity which provides music and sensory therapy for individuals with rare genetic diseases and other disorders.

Paul Cahalane, the charismatic A & R Director and founder of Iconic Artist Management (I AM), the organisation behind Film Coolio (currently in production), took to the stage to introduce his team of talented actors and models including Shaun Foster Conley, of ITV’s Benidorm fame, and Daphne Sherman, 60’s scene-queen and the late Ben Sherman’s wife, who star in the film. Other thoroughbreds casted include esteemed world champion boxing promotor, Frank Maloney, and Trevor Clarke, who provide dark comedy and a touch of early Michael Caine to their roles. The event provided a platform for Paul to highlight all areas of his thriving and creative business from make-up artists and fashion designers to jewellery makers and aspiring actors and models. Interestingly everybody on board with I AM appears to be very supportive of one another, working closely together in every area of the business, sending out a very close-knit, family vibe. Even Paul’s dad, John, plays a role in the movie.

As the cocktail hour hit, clothing and football shirts were auctioned off to raise serious wonga for the charity and bids were placed by budding actors in the audience wanting to play a lead character in the film, which so far has attracted of local businessmen and entrepreneurs and featured in the Daily Mail.

Paul’s on-going aim is to generate interest and funding for the film and as the project gathers momentum with over 1000 hits per day on COOLIO’s facebook fan page, Film Coolio looks set to go from strength to strength.

THE TOYS ARE BACK INTownOn the 18th June, Petts Wood

welcomed a new toy store, so aptly named Petts Wood Toys. The store is owned

by local parents, Emma and Gary Crawford, who also own another toy shop in Beckenham which has been running for over 80 years.

The grand opening was buzzing with excited children and parents. There was face painting and balloons creating a playful atmosphere, and the enthusiastic and dedicated staff were on hand to help any customers who needed it.

The Crawfords, who live local to Petts Wood felt that a bright and colourful toy shop was long overdue and on Saturday when over 100 people had turned up before midday, they were proved right. Petts Wood Toys in Queensway, where the store is located really does offer little that would not appeal to the younger generation.

Both stores stock a variety of classic and modern toys for all ages. Of course

you can expect to see toys from all of the leading manufacturers, such as LEGO, Playmobil, Knex, Fisher Price and some of the more exclusive brands such as Melissa & Doug.

Now that the new toy store is open, Petts Wood will be a really child friendly place to live and visit.

Local residents were, happy to see a new family run business in the area. One local said; “It’s nice to have a proper shop in Petts Wood again.” We wish Emma and Gary Crawford the best of luck with their new business venture and hope that their shop brings fun and fortune to Petts Wood.

THE NAKED

LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM, THERE IS ONE THING THAT CAN’T BE DENIED ABOUT JAMIE OLIVER, HE IS A PIONEER. HE HAS SINGLE-HANDEDLY REVOLUTIONISED FOOD AND THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT FOOD HERE IN BRITAIN AND IS CURRENTLY ON A MISSION TO EDUCATE OUR TRANSATLANTIC BROTHERS AND SISTERS ABOUT SMART COOKING AND THE DANGERS OF UNHEALTHY EATING.

Words byLuke Harman

Chef

Page 23: SCENE (Kent) July

SCENE 23

Now a household name in the UK, and as a result of his efforts to replicate his success in British schools where he famously exiled the once loved ‘turkey twizzler’, Jamie is fast becoming a sensation in the US with his tough love and eradication programme of all that is bad about lunches in the mainstream American education system.

Just recently, on the 15th June, Jamie and his American Food Revolution was instrumental in the removal of flavoured milk from all schools in the state of Los Angeles where the pupils will now only receive wholesome, plain white milk instead of ‘liquid candy’ with their meals - an impressive coup for the Essex-born chef and another achievement to add to an already impressive repertoire.

Such esteem that Jamie now seems to command does not appear out of thin air however. Now in his fourteenth year as a television personality Jamie Oliver has grafted his way to the top. He has matured drastically from the over-zealous, albeit charismatic, catchphrase-ridden Naked Chef who burst onto our screens way back in 1997.

An overnight success, the Naked Chef turned Jamie into a talismanic modern-day celebrity chef which propelled him on his way to becoming the much-loved campaigner we see today. And not content with being labelled solely as a TV cook, Oliver has expanded his portfolio of work, with almost unwavering success, across a number of food-related sectors these past few years.

It all started for Jamie however at his parent’s country inn, The Cricketers, in Clavering, a humble little village in Essex just north of Bishop’s Stortford. Trevor and Sally Oliver, who still run the pub-cum-restaurant today, soon brought Jamie and his sister Anna-Marie into the family business as a means of earning their pocket money. Anna-Marie followed in her mother’s footsteps helping out as a waitress in front of house while Jamie began to enthusiastically shadow his professionally trained father in the kitchen.

His fascination for food continued to grow and at 16 Jamie left school and completed his training at Westminster Catering College. After spending some time working in France, followed by a stint at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street Restaurant in London, Jamie joined the acclaimed River Café where he worked for three and a half years before eventually being offered his own television show, the aforementioned Naked Chef, after being featured in a documentary about the River Café.

Page 24: SCENE (Kent) July

24 SCENE

Since then he has not looked back. With eleven television series under his belt and fourteen books (his 2010 book, Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals, became his first million-selling book in the UK as well as being the fastest-selling non-fiction book since records began), Jamie Oliver has been an ever-present character on British television, bookshelves and high streets with his brand of Italian restaurants for many a year. More recently however we have been forced to share him with the world as he continues to aim high and conquer the globe of culinary sins.

He is, to an extent, taken for granted. Following his efforts in opening a training restaurant for young people who were not in full time education or employment, which subsequently became Fifteen, Jamie went on to establish the Jamie Oliver Foundation.

The Foundation is a registered charity whose mission is to empower, educate and engage as many people as possible to love and enjoy good food. This means learning how to cook, understanding where food comes from, and recognizing the power it can have on our health, happiness, and even finances. The foundation does this through teaching, training and employment, and also by making good clear information available to as many people as possible. In 2003 Jamie was awarded an MBE for services to the hospitality industry. However, not one to rest on his laurels, Jamie has continued to grow the foundation in order to fulfil his never-ending quest to give back to the industry that made him the icon he has become.

Arguably it is in America where Jamie’s achievements are perhaps the most remarkable. As touched upon earlier, Jamie’s American Food Revolution has sought to expel the bad and instil the good in all things

culinary in a nation so fraught with childhood obesity troubles.

His success stateside has perhaps fallen under the radar somewhat. Aside from winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Programme in 2010, Jamie’s American Food Revolution is an ongoing project that aims to save the health of America’s next generation. The campaign promotes the importance of children needing better food at school to ensure better health prospects, as well as endeavouring to keep cooking skills as part of the teaching curriculum.

His endless and hectic work schedule is an indication of the measure of the man. Ensuring the wellbeing of the future of his own nation is one thing, but to attempt to alter a long-established way of life in a different country, and as a foreigner, is quite another. Slowly but surely however, he is getting there. The American parents, much as their British predecessors are listening to the message that there are hidden dangers in their children’s food and with the right action they can improve their health and improve their futures.

It is a message that will resonate so very loudly with his own children one would imagine. Recently becoming a father for the fourth time to baby Buddy, Jamie and his wife Jools also have three girls, Poppy, Daisy and Petal. With an ever-expanding family of his own to look after it is a wonder as to how Jamie Oliver finds the time to do all that he does. However, with his latest venture, The Big Feastival, taking place on Clapham Common on July 1, 2 & 3 dubbed as a first class extravaganza of food and music, as well as other television projects in the not too distant pipeline, the cheeky-chappy chef is showing no signs of hanging his apron up just yet. SCENE’sa weekInthe Life of...

Like most mornings, I got up at 5.45am to fit in a visit to Virgin Active with my gym buddy. Early morning workouts always set me in the right frame of mind for work.

After that, we start baking as all our cakes are baked freshly on the premises. We have a bride and groom from Australia coming in for a cake tasting this morning and they have requested white and dark chocolate mud cake. I researched recipes, as mud cake isn’t on our repertoire of tried, tested and perfected cake flavours. After looking at various recipe versions I created my own and we think it’s very Yummy!

First consultation meeting this morning is Kate who is marrying Harvey in July in Bromley. They are having a music festival themed wedding and have chosen a chocolate cup wedding cake with top tier and personalised bride and groom topper.

Most of the day was filled with baking and ended up with a consultation meeting with Elizabeth Gall, who runs Simply Elegant Wedding Planning, and her clients Bianca and David. They have chosen a four tiered wedding cake and loved the white and dark chocolate mud cake so much they have decided to have all four tiers in this flavour.

I finally got home at around 8pm and made dinner for our beautiful daughters Hannah, Chloe and Megan.

MONDAY

Today was the first day of my 5 day radiance cleanse detox programme. Feeling good and not hungry in the slightest….. YET!Visited my gorgeous friends, Darren & Liam @ Rubric, who helped create Oolong in all its glory, at their office in Borough to brainstorm website and marketing ideas. I then took a lovely walk to RFIB Insurance in the City, who I visit once a month for in-house treatments. I love the City and how buzzy it is!Practised an hour of wonderful ying yoga in the evening which aided a good night’s sleep!

Received the personalised cake-

pop labels that we ordered for the

Christening on Sunday. Each label

had a different child’s name on -

they will look perfect tied with

organza ribbon on the cake-pops.

Extra hungry today so popped

upstairs to The Bickley Deli who

created a delicious plate of meats,

olives, sun blush tomatoes and

mozzarella stuffed peppers – yum!

Spent the day working on various

cakes and then rushed home as

my husband had finished his first

short film and we were having a

family ‘premiere’ showing of it. I

may be biased but I thought it was

fantastic! He’s already written his

second script, which is beautiful,

emotional and surprising.

WEDNESDAY

My assistant delivered the Sixties

Camper Van Wedding themed

cake to High Rocks in Tunbridge

Wells, whilst I worked on two

White Chocolate Wedding cakes

for Saturday. The kitchen was

really hot and I had to get an

air conditioner in otherwise the

chocolate wouldn’t have set.

It’s a very precise art, chocolate

tempering.Worked on lots of dif

ferent cakes,

adding all the finishing touches.

Fridays are always busy as most

of our cakes are delivered on a

Saturday.

First, off to deliver Henry Winkler’s

cake to The Glades. Unfortunately

I didn’t get to meet the Fonz, but

he tweeted that he thought the

cake was great. Came back to the

Studio to work on the Christening

cake for Sunday. Got home at 8pm today, just in

time to watch Penn & Teller Fool

Us on TV, which just happened to

be the episode that we watched

being filmed a few weeks ago.

Coincidentally my friend Steve was

pulled out of the audience to help

them with a trick and even though

he had the most airtime, if you

didn’t blink you could also spot my

husband and me in the audience!

Our children were most impressed

once they had looked up from their

mobiles!

Back in the Studio at 6am to finish the christening cake we were making for Terry and Amy’s daughter Poppy Nell. We made a stunning two-tiered cake with the main feature being a replica sugar pair of Poppy Nell’s favourite shoes. We also made personalised cake-pops for 35 children and some marshmallow filled chocolate mice. Then back home for a well earned glass (or two) of wine before doing it all again tomorrow. Piece of cake!

FRIDAY

SATURDAY

SUNDAY

Another gym visit and then the first phone call of the day is from someone asking if I could make a cake for Henry Winkler, in the design of the book he was signing on Saturday at Waterstones in The Glades. Of course we can - I mean he was just the coolest person on TV when I was younger, how could I say no to the Fonz!Another last minute cake came in today and I ended up working until 12.30am.

Music may surround us, available whenever we want, at our fingertips, on demand, in an instant. But does that mean we enjoy it all the more? How often do we really listen closely?

Ever since Meridian was founded by Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd in 1977, their audio systems have been all about the quality of the listening experience. Enjoying the very best. Appreciating the finest available music for listening pleasure, not mere background noise.

At the heart of the Meridian philosophy, and the driving force behind the company’s pursuit of perfection, is the desire to lose as little as possible of the original source material when it is reproduced. Every link in the chain, from recording to reproduction, represents an opportunity for information to be lost and quality to be comprised. By seeking to address this problem, Meridian has invented many unique technologies and set some of the highest benchmarks in performance standards. And while these advances have been the result of some extremely clever technological thinking, what is really important is the experience it enables for the listener and viewer. A richer, deeper, more detailed experience – one you can get lost in. Reproduction so pure you’ll find yourself at the heart of the performance, perceiving undiscovered nuances no matter how subtle.

Meridian founders, Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd, met in Cambridge in the early 1970s, and it was through a shared love of music that they became friends. But it was their desire to hear so much better the music they loved that inspired them to design and manufacture their own studio equipment and so Meridian was born.

They met at a period in time when high-performance audio manufactures were concentrating on producing the best separates they could : turntables, amplifiers or loudspeakers. But what frustrated the Meridian founders was that these individual components were not necessarily being designed to be used together, and how that often resulted in a reduction in sound quality.

So the idea was born to focus on making systems. Comprising separates, yes, but separates specifically designed with the other components in mind to form a complete audio pathway, after all what amplifier could be better equipped to communicate with a Meridian loudspeaker than a Meridian amplifier?

Founder Bob Stuart is fond of the analogy, “Would you buy your car’s engine from one manufacturer and its suspension and transmission from another?”

From their first production model, an active loudspeaker named the M1, to the groundbreaking form and performance of DSP8000 loudspeakers, every piece bearing the Meridian name has evolved from the original determination to hear better music, clearer and with the greater enjoyment.

The Glades shopping centre offers over 130 shops alone including major departments stores such as Marks and Spencer and Debenhams alongside major retailers, designer brand names and independent stores.

For those who enjoy arts and culture, the Churchill Theatre offers a wide selection of plays and performances throughout the year plus the town has a local cinema. FLOWERS FOR THE SummerThe warm summer weather

sprouts a host of social events that require creative dressing. Function décor creates the

magical atmosphere that transports your guests from the local church hall or scout’s hut to another time or place.

Proms are held for leavers at the end of term to reward effort and hard work, and allow students to let off steam. This is the perfect opportunity to get your Florist’s creative juices flowing. Your Florist can assist with the transformation of your school gymnasium or dinner hall into a grand ballroom.

Flowers and balloons blended with creative lighting and accessories can make your theme rock.

Most modern florists are also trained balloon artists. Ask your florist to combine flowers with balloons to create Hollywood glamour for your prom. Imagine the wow factor of huge balloon bouquets weighted with floral arrangements.

To lend extra glitz to your ball gown add a contemporary funky corsage made with fresh flowers, feathers and loads of bling. A corsage can be worn on the wrist, shoulder, the back or front of your dress, on a handbag, or in the hair. It is advisable to order a corsage well in advance of your prom.Begin staging your venue by drawing the eyes of your guests away from an unsightly entrance with a huge statement piece. You can also use this trick to conceal notice boards or fixtures that are not in keeping with your theme.

Utilise all the props you can to accessorise and emphasise your theme.

Plan well in advance - you only get one shot. Your venue should be striking, stunning and memorable.

WHEN THE EDITOR SUGGESTED WE REVIEW THE PLAZA MEDITERRANEAN BAR AND GRILL, SITUATED IN NEARBY LOCKSBOTTOM HIGH STREET, WHICH I’D YET TO SAMPLE, I AGREED IN BLIND HOPE AND SILENTLY PRAYED THAT IT WOULD LIVE UP TO THE EDITORS HYPE!

Mediterranean

Having spent two gloriously long, hot summers and countless holidays on various Mediterranean islands, I do count myself as a bit of an authority on good, Mediterranean food. Ever since my love affair with Hellenic food began, I have been on the hunt for a good local taverna-style restaurant but have found several places sadly lacking in both substance and authenticity. Upon entering the Plaza through its modern glass frontage, we were greeted by the incredibly friendly waiting staff and the owner himself, local restaurateur, Nick Constantine. As Nick led us through the restaurant to our table, our noses were assaulted by an array of delicious smells and the hopes for a great meal were rising. It was particularly good to see that the restaurant was

Dining

SCENE 59

incredibly busy, every table occupied and the atmosphere was brilliant - groups of friends and family and couples alike seemed to be enjoying their Friday evening at the Plaza, all positive signs leading to a great meal ahead. The starters arrived quickly, and having eaten little all day this helped to feed my huge hunger! The first of our starters comprised of lightly battered squid, prawns, white bait and mussels with a delicious tartare sauce. A simple dish, but executed brilliantly, and not a crumb left once we’d got through it. This was also separately accompanied by a Trio of delicious dips Taramosalata, Houmous, Tzatziki, served with warm pitta bread.

We were then served the Wild Mushroom Risotto with aged-parmesan shavings. I’m a huge mushroom fan so when I saw this on the menu as a starter I had to order. The Risotto was incredibly creamy and definitely one of the best I’d tasted.

For my main course, I ordered the roast lamb which arrived with potatoes and on a bed of mixed vegetables. The quality of the meat was outstanding, perfectly cooked and literally melted in my mouth.

Unfortunately for us, as all of the portions were so large and delicious, not one of us could even attempt to order dessert, which was a real shame as the menu looked great!

Overall the meal was an absolute resounding success. The restaurant was furnished well, and having a peek in the open-plan kitchen on the way to the toilet demonstrated a clean and tidy working environment. I can’t remember the last time I was met with such attentive and friendly staff and I would have no qualms about returning to and recommending The Plaza to friends and family.

JAGUAR’S RACINGheart

THE JAGUAR XKR-S - AN UPRATED VERSION OF THE QUIETLY LEGENDARY XKR. THE XKR-S STILL SPORTS THE 5.0-LITRE SUPERCHARGED V8, BUT POWER IS UP FROM 510BHP TO 542BHP. THERE’S ALSO A BOOST IN TORQUE TO 501LB FT (UP FROM 461LB FT).

The hardcore XKR-S gets a new version of Jag’s brilliant adaptive dynamics suspension with uprated dampers, active sports exhaust system, and new aero to reduce lift and assist the massive brakes, which measure 380mm at the front and 376mm at the rear - bigger than a Lamborghini Murcielago’s. It needs them, too, because top speed is 186mph, and it should hit 62mph in 4.2 seconds. Look carefully and you’ll see the XJR-S also has new headlamps. Those will go onto the rest of the XK range soon as part of a mild 2012 facelift.

Page 64: SCENE (Kent) July

64 SCENE

Jaguar also tells us the XKR-S will emit less than 300g/km of CO2, which means it’ll be top of its class in the cleanliness stakes.

The AJ-V8 Gen III engines are the most advanced and efficient Jaguar has ever produced. They deliver significantly more power and torque than the previous generation of engines: 510PS and 625Nm in the new supercharged XKR and 385PS and 515Nm in the normally aspirated XK models. All models, except the new 174mph (280km/h) XKR with Speed Pack, are electronically limited to a maximum speed of 155mph (250kph), but the 0-60mph sprint for naturally aspirated coupe models is now 5.2 seconds (previously 5.9 seconds), while for the supercharged XKR coupe, 0-60mph is 4.6 seconds (previously 4.9 seconds).

In-gear times are equally impressive, with the naturally aspirated XK accelerating from 50-70mph in just 2.5 seconds, while the supercharged XKR completes the same sprint in just 1.9 seconds.

The XKR Coupe with new optional Speed Pack allows customers to further strengthen their XKR’s already impressive breadth of capability, by extending the car’s top speed from 155mph (250km/h) to an electronically limited 174mph (280km/h) thanks to a unique engine and transmission recalibration.

To ensure the XKR with Speed Pack remains stable at high speeds, the coupe uses a revised front aerodynamic splitter and larger rear spoiler to provide increased balance and a reduction in lift. The XKR’s computerised Active Differential Control also adjusts to reduce steering sensitivity at very high speeds, further improving stability and driver control. Every XKR with the Speed Pack will come with body-coloured side sills and rear diffuser, and a chrome finish to the window surrounds, upper and lower mesh grilles, side Power Vents and boot lid finisher. Red brake callipers with a Jaguar ‘R’ logo sit inside 20-inch Kasuga alloy wheels.

Aries 21 Mar-19 Apr Be pleased with your past performances as it has been a trying and testing time. You are now well clear of any embarrassment and can enjoy what is now laid out before you. See that you will be involved with new and exciting things which were always in the pipeline, but were not able to transform into any form of reality before now.

Sagittarius 22 Nov-21 Dec The new opening of love and finance will come in respectively. Are you ready for it? Your stars say you are, as there is a conjunction of the planets, which will bring in this necessary surprise and take you to another level in your life you never thought possible before. Embrace all that comes to you as it is your destiny from now on.

Capricorn 22 Dec-19 Jan As openings after openings embrace your life, you will become deliriously happy and content for the first time in ages. It comes to pass in super quick time and it is there to stay for all time. See just what you are now made of and begin to see yourself taken to heights unknown, but fruitful at the same time. Now you will understand your destiny.

Aquarius 20 Jan-18 FebYou are in a very punchy position in your life where you need to make some drastic decisions on how you are to proceed. Your best interest to remain bullish at all times, so that the right outlook is maintained. Be firm with matters on the work front so that you are able to exercise your right, which is now! A good outcome to come.

Pisces 19 Feb-20 MarNever think you are forgotten as this important breakthrough brings in all the quality assurances that you are after. It is now that matters turn around for you in a most dramatic way and life saver after life saver is the natural way to go. Be optimistic as everything lands safely at your door. Two new projects to inspire you will be the order of the day.

Taurus 20 Apr-20 May To feel stifled has been a thing of the past. Now you enter a completely new set of rules, which will alleviates all the suffering from past years. New projects are in the pipeline and a new and exciting contact will make itself known to you. Where you take this is up to you, but the rewards are always far reaching and much needed at this time.

Scorpio 23 Oct-21 NovSee the good life approaching with precious little effort on your part. You have made the successful transition to the next level and all that hard work has paid off handsomely. Be open-minded as there will be necessary adjustments to your lifestyle from now on. New and important people to meet and it is your way to deal with them in style.

Libra 23 Sep-22 Oct Spare some valuable time for yourself now. It will do you the power of good. The fast lane can take its toll if there is no respite in the foreseeable future, so allow yourself a little pampering time as you will be expected to perform at the highest level once again. New important projects are coming your way and there will be precious little time then.

Gemini 21 May-20 JunExtraordinary events, which you were not prepared for, have now landed in your lap. Take a deep breath and a leap of faith is necessary to achieve the ultimate goal and satisfaction. You will not be out of your depth, just a little startled as to why now and why you. This course has been destined to you, so you must take it up and run with it.

Leo 23 Jul-22 Aug It is the time to make or break. What you have always dreamed of is there before you and it is the right timing to approach this very important project, which will be the high light of your life. You have worked successfully to achieve it, so now it comes to you to see just where you can go with it. There are no limits.

Cancer 21 Jun-22 JulIt is now that you can see just how much better everything is for you. You are starting to trust in your own instincts and will largely be able to depend on them as time goes by. See signs of evidence coming to you so that your trust in your ability grows daily. The new avenue of work will surprise and delight you at the same time.

Virgo 23 Aug-22 Sep Don’t feel so down in the dumps. You are being stretched to the very pinnacle of what is necessary in your ultimate achievement and satisfaction. Do not feel downhearted but elated, as it is just what you needed to climb to the top of your career. It will announce you to the world and so you can at last believe in yourself. You are going places.
