O

ne of my favorite covers from the early years of El Paso Scene was the December 1994 issue that featured Fred Carters winter scene of a train passing the Union Depot. I cant remember now how Fred and I met; perhaps I had seen a print of his work or maybe he called me. Fred was very cautious about reproducing his work in a newspaper, but he thought well enough of the Scene to give it a try. What I remember most about Fred Frederick Carter Carter was his generosity. He gave me a copy of a wonderful train story he had illustrated and selfpublished in a loose-leaf binder, and a print of the painting he had made of Downtown El Paso that still hangs framed above my desk. When I dropped off some copies of the Scene, he invited to me to dinner with his family. Freds bright colors and expressive style made his work a natural fit for the Scene, despite his misgivings about reproductions. I was able to talk Fred into one other cover for the Scene a year or two later, in connection with some holiday cards he had created for a local charity. That took some effort; he turned me down at first then called back and agreed to let me use one of the images. His family told me that was typical of Fred; he might seem gruff at first, then relent. I tried a year or two later to use another of his paintings for a cover, but Fred that time stuck to his guns and declined. He impressed me as a true artist, someone who cared much more about creating art than being an artist. He was a large, lumbering man who often dressed in denim overalls, and spoke humbly about himself but passionately about his art. His daughter Susan called me in late May to tell me that Fred had died a couple of days earlier at age 84. We agreed

that it would be fitting to honor Fred and his work with this months cover. Freds wife, Dottie, gave me a tour of their Westside home filled with Freds art spanning six decades. I learned that he had studied art in New York in the late 1940s after serving in the Navy during World War II. A native of Galveston, Fred moved to El Paso thanks to Dottie, who worked as an airline hostess with Continental Airlines here. His creativity encompassed much more than paintings. He was an avid craftsman of model ships and trains. Fred was one of the old school artists who worked for many years in advertising and related fields as a commercial illustrator while still painting and growing in their own artistic style. Fellow El Paso artists like William Kolliker, Bassel Wolfe and Bill Rakocy have shared similar backgrounds. But fewer such opportunities exist today for such artists. The jobs once held by talented freehand artists have been replaced by graphic designers who have mastered the intricacies of computer software. But computer-created images can rarely convey the same personal intensity of paint stroked upon a canvas by an inspired artist. Perhaps that was why Fred Carter was so reluctant to let his paintings be reproduced, because he knew that a copy could never communicate all that he intended in making his art.
