From the Pastor’s Desk Two weeks ago, I noticed it was the anniversary of the death of a dear friend. Her name was Jeannie B. McDermott. She lived in the Fordham Hill Complex in the Bronx, specifically in the “Derby” Building. All the buildings in Fordham Hill had a name. I wonder if it might be the first gated community in the Bronx! I say Mrs. McDermott was a dear friend butt me explain this unusual friendship. I was twelve years old when my mother decided to “ruin” my life! My mom was a steady caregiver to an elderly retired teacher in the Fordham Hill complex for many years. After hearing about a recently widowed Mrs. McDermott, my mom gave me marching orders to meet Mrs. McDermott and accompany her to Mass on Sunday morning and then afterwards help her to do some shopping. On the brink of being a teenager looking to hang out with friends in the park, this was the last thing I thought I ever wanted to do. However, I was wrong. Mrs. McDermott was in her sixties. She was born in Trois Rivières, Quebec, and came to New York as a nurse where she met her husband. They were married for about thirty years with no children. After my initial reluctance to assist her to Mass and then shopping, I gradually recognized someone very different that not one of my friends or brothers ever experienced. For one thing, after Mass, we went to a local diner for breakfast. I think it was the first time I was ever in a diner! More than that, the Sundays turned into sometime Saturdays and wonderful nature walks around the park as well as dinners in local restaurants. This was all a brand new phenomenon to this kid from the block. Mrs. McDermott would teach me how to help her with her overcoat, feed a squirrel or a blue jay, walk as a gentleman on the outer side of the sidewalk, and then, in the restaurants, she gave me her lighter to light her cigarette. (It was a different world back then!) Why am I sharing this personal story with you my patient parishioners? Well, because it was a new beginning for me to get to know someone so different, even if I was so young and clueless at that time. On a number of occasions, I did some food shopping for her when she wasn’t able to do so, and on the odd occasion, I would return to find her crying. She told me then, and of course, I didn’t understand, that crying was a part of life. She didn’t need help or anything, she just wanted to cry.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 The most valuable lesson, however, came when I was in the college seminary, still coming back to visit her on Sunday to get food for her and other items. On one occasion, when I returned from shopping, I found her laid out on the floor, her head on the lowest shelf of a bookcase in her sitting room. She had been drinking, something she started to do more and more over the years. When I entered the apartment, she woke up, smiled and said to me, “Oh, hello, little one!” As a morally charged young seminarian, I scolded her and took issue with her drinking. She then sat up and very gently said, “Little one, please don’t judge me!” I have never forgot that message and I never will. In any event, I got to know Mrs. McDermott and benefit from her wisdom for over eight years right through the middle of my college years. I often wonder why God put her in my life at that unusual time. She introduced me to so many things, sometimes painful things such as loneliness, but she was always so enriching. When she died, her brother gave me a few of her objets d’art, including a triptych that was her pride and joy. It is called The Entombment, by Flemish painter Quentin Massys. I was so happy to put it up on my wall in my new living room at IHM. In any event, I hope you don’t mind this trip down memory lane as I thank Mrs. McDermott for teaching me and encouraging me to be a good boy. Her real hopes, I realize now, were that I would hopefully one day become a good man. Rest in peace my unusual and loving friend.
