President’s Report

So, the start of the year and it’s only 8 months to ScaleACT. I have already started down the path of

building for ScaleACT 18.

While ScaleACT is our signature event to really engage with the public, we still keep looking for

opportunities to get out there and promote ourselves. The Canberra Show and Malkara are two such events

that the committee feels we can now commit to.

There has been some misconception regarding our level of involvement at the Canberra Show. The Club

has never been invited to attend, as far as I am aware, to participate by the Canberra Show committee. The

work Ross has put in has been stellar in maintaining the completion category over the recent years, and we

are aware that it is a great event to promote ourselves. After some discussion, we are at the point where we

want to look at our future involvement at that event especially since the number of competition entries

continue to diminish. As a result, we will have representation at the initial planning conference in April to

discover what is possible, and to secure an invitation.

At the last committee meeting we re-engaged with the Malkara Committee. We had a frank discussion

regarding why we have declined their invitations for the last few years. We believe we have set the

conditions such that we are happy to attend Malkara this year; although, we will review that once that is

complete. The display and build table we envisage is something that will grab the kids attention and

something they may relate to. Our thinking is that the display and build table should revolve around Star

Wars, Gundam and maybe street cars. As usual, we will decline payment from the school.

Just a reminder to keep an eye on the calendar. We are definitely going to be at Hellenic Club Civic venue

for May, June and August. It will mean that we will hold the AGM in the city, and that our Club Swap

and Sell will be in July once we are back at Woden.

From the Editorial Team

Hi all welcome to the first newsletter for 2018. It is probably a good a time as any to announce that I will

not be standing for the editorship at our AGM in August. The main reason for this is that Tracy and I are

taking 10 months off from work and doing the big lap around this fine country of ours, starting in Feb

2019. So I need 2 things from the membership: firstly a replacement for the editors job in August, and

secondly what kit I am going to take to build on the road. Additional requirements: no painting. No photo

etched brass, limited small parts. I’ll accept most suggestions!!

In order to attract someone to the position of editor, I’ll set out the duties: The newsletter is published to

the ACTSMS facebook page and web site on a quarterly basis. Jerry Cashman can assist with the website

posting and anyone with a facebook account can assist with that side of the house. An email is sent out to

the committee and selected members 2 weeks out to solicit anything worthy for publication. The only

software required is MS word, and or publisher if you have it. Photo editing is done thru Windows Photo

viewer, Windows Paint or MS photo editor, all software is part of the windows 7/10 package.

The newsletter is there to capture the history of the society, not really to replicate what’s on social media.

That being said you are the editor and can use any articles you see fit, so long as it captures the society’s

happenings.

If you want to do a stint on the committee then this is the best way to start.

A quick reminder from the guys in Sydney

Just a reminder that the Greater Sydney Scale Model Expo' will be held on the 17th and 18th of March at

Blacktown Leisure Centre, Sentry Drive, Stanhope Gardens (just west of the M7).

Treasurer’s Waffle

The financial position of the society is looking very healthy and we are still on track to make a loss for the

financial year (something we have planned to do) – but I can be proven wrong!

Due to ongoing efforts, the society’s membership has increased considerably with now 119 members,

which I believe is the largest we have been. A very healthy position for the society and we are always

happy to welcome more!

As always, the committee is always looking for suggestions and ideas (workshops, raffle prizes, etc.) to

benefit us all so please let us know, it is after all our society. As always, if you are interested in seeing ‘the

books’ come and see me.

Cheers,

Treasurer ACTSMS Paul D'Orival

SH-60 Seahawk In Action

Squadron Signal 10251

Review by John Baxter

This one is quite spectacular and has 261

superb colour photos in such detail that it

could double as a Squadron Signal ‘Walk

Around’. John Gourley has assembled these

colour photos of the Sikorsky Seahawk

Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System

(LAMPS) with suitable captions to each.

I’m not usually a rotary wing fan but this

book might change things slightly. Ok, it’s

not filled with a lot of text but then

Squad/Sigs aren’t. What they are renowned for is the quality and variety of photographs, most of which the

lay person would never have access to without significant ‘clearance’. This is no exception. There’s plenty

of good looks at equipment, and although identified, the specifics are very general and operating

characteristics and performance details are scarce. But for the modeller, that’s not a high priority – it’s the

look that counts.

It’s more difficult to get Squad/Sig publications now than it was ten or so years ago, so if this title (or

similar) takes your fancy, then I’d suggest that you do not tarry. It won’t be for everybody but it’s an

important title for both naval aiviation fans and modellers.

It is available from Platypus Publications in NSW, [email protected] for about $25 recommended

retail price (plus postage if applicable).

Many thanks to Ley Reynolds of Platypus Publications for the review copy. ISBN 9780897478533.

V2 – The A4 Rocket

From Peenemünde to Redstone

Review by John Baxter

Once again, Classic Publications (an imprint of Crecy Publishing

Ltd) have produced something special. Mind you with the

credentials of Robert Forsythe (Project Editor), Eddie J Creek

(emblem artwork), neither author Murray R Barber nor colour

artist Mark Alloway could have a had better pair to help produce

and oversee this intriguing tale of the V2, number 29 in the

Classic Luftwaffe series.

This book of 296 pages contains ten chapters covering early

rocket development in Germany through the war years to

conclude with both British/American and separate Soviet rocket

programs – the space-race! There’s also some mention of Werner

von Braun’s SS connections and other similar tit bits but these

matters were washed over post war to ensure the continuing

research and rocket development to continue without ‘witch hunts’. In addition, it has a glossary, eleven

appendices, sources and bibliography and an index predominantly of personalities.

The chapters are comprehensive and very well written. I found especially the chapters on the discovery of

Peenemünde and the subsequent Bomber Command raid (Operation Hydra) and the Anatomy of the V2

quite intriguing. The former covered the game playing of various British ‘intelligence’ agencies and their

members – Duncan Sandys again played a role which, to me, was less than appealing.

It’s very well illustrated with 38 colour photos, 75 colour artworks, 404 black and white photos, 41 black

and white line and assorted drawings and 14 maps (colour and b&w) – once again, many of the photos

have not been previously published. It also presents several possible diorama scenarios for the modeller

with the rocket itself, the Meillerwagen, A-Stoff Betriebsstoffänhanger (Liquid Oxygen Towable Bowser),

Fuerlietpanzer, mobile firing table, Hanomag SS 100 Heavy Tractor, launch sites and other paraphernalia.

Plenty of photos to aid in building such dioramas.

It concludes with Alan B. Shepherd Junior in the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule’s fifteen and a half minute

flight and President Kennedy’s challenge to NASA ‘of landing a man on the moon and returning him

safely to the earth’ before the end of the decade. The work that went on after the close of the war is quite

nicely presented and illuminating. I found the entire contents so well presented that I often found it hard to

put this book down. While there’s plenty of technical information, it’s not overwhelming.

Make no mistake, if you’re interested in the Luftwaffe, V2s or just rocketry and space travel (although to a

much lesser extent), then this one has to be on your list. It is a great book for any Luftwaffe enthusiast

alone but its appeal should easily go beyond that. Now, it’s not cheap with its recommended retail price at

$125 but it’s an integral part of Classic’s Luftwaffe series and in its own right, an excellent book. It is

available from Hyland’s Bookshop in Melbourne [email protected] or 03 9654 7448.

Many thanks to Ms Orietta Colussi of DLS Australia for the review copy. ISBN 9781906537531.

Is there a JP in the room?

On your behalf….(not), and at great financial cost I attended months of lectures, endured endless

examinations, completed voluminous assignments and withstood countless vetting processes by every

known agency including the AFP, RSPCA, etc. etc. just so I could become an ‘official JP’ to service the

needs of the ACTSMS members – but only those who are actually residents of the ACT:

I.e. JP = Justice of the Peace.

I took my oath as a Federal JP at the Justice of the Peace Swearing in Ceremony at the Supreme Court by

the Chief Justice on 26 October 2017.

Hence, should any ACT or federal territory resident member require any of the following documentation

services please feel free to contact me in advance of a meeting so that I can assist you on the night:

Certified true copy;

Witness signature;

Statutory Declaration;

Affidavit;

Contracts for ADF scale models;

Power of Attorney;

Enduring Power of Attorney.

The ACTSMS FaceBook group and our eMail

“G’Day fellow ACTSMS members - we’ve had many new members join over the last year and I thought it

might be a good time to explain and remind members of the differences between our two main club

communication vehicles - I’m referring of course to our FaceBook group and our eMail list.

The ACTSMS FaceBook group is intended to be the ‘public’ face for the society - we have almost as many

non-member guests in the group as members and it’s a great way for us to show off our projects, encourage

each other and ask questions. As is public however it’s not the best place to discuss internal ‘club

business’… anything that could be contentious or which might generate internal debate should probably

either be left for face to face discussion at our monthly meetings OR discussed via the club eMail list… the

eMail list is restricted to club members only and it’s a more appropriate place to air issues or dirty laundry

:-)

All financial members get added to the eMail list as soon as possible and any list members can post to it at

any time by addressing: [email protected]

There is always going to be a bit of cross-over, but if you remember that FaceBook is ‘public’ and eMail is

‘for the club’ you can’t go far wrong.

Thanks guys E Coordinator Jerry Cashman

Many thanks to Ross and the team, for the managing the display and public face of the ACTSMS. Ross has

indicated it will be his last year in the hot seat, and we thank his very much for the work he’s done.

Stay tuned for the next society meeting where the committee will outline our future involvement in

the both the Canberra Show and Malkara special school event.
