Some rough plays occurred that could have ended badly.

Some of the Pirates’ key players were kept on the sideline after a fight almost broke out on the field. Luckily, nothing significant happened and no suspensions or flags were assessed due to the additional contact.

“Emotions definitely got high [throughout the game], I think pride got

to them,” Pirates coach Joseph Howell said. “We just try to keep our heads level and preach sportsmanship to the players.”

“Our special teams and defense definitely were a plus today. They definitely gave us the momentum, especially that kickoff after halftime.”

PAL will be off this coming week for Labor Day.

The fifth week of the season will resume Sept. 8 with Dade City travelling to play Wiregrass.

on the ground and finished with just under 500 yards of offense.

Junior Desmin Green completed 10 of 13 passes for 202 yards. He also added three touchdowns and an interception through the air and rushed 17 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.

His favorite target was junior Darrion Robinson, who finished with five receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jacquez Mobley also had a 23-yard touchdown reception. Sophomore Malcom Gibbs, junior

Ivory Lopey, and senior Johnasay Grant each also had at least one reception during the game.

The offense was on fire, but the defense also played well in the shutout. Sophomore Edward Matos and senior Jacquez Mobley each caught an interception. Junior Jordan McLaughlin finished with two pass deflections and senior Derrick Harrelson had one himself.

Fumbles continue to be a factor for the Pirates as they had five on offense, although they recovered four of them.

The Pirates will play the Gulf Buccaneers during their home opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. at W.F. Edwards Stadium.

Both teams have a 1-0 record going into Friday’s contest.

The Buccaneers edged out the Cypress Creek Coyotes by a tally of 14-12 in their season opener last Friday. Rain delayed that game for nearly an hour.

The Pirates shutout the Buccaneers 46-0 when the two teams faced off on Sept. 1, 2017.

Tragedy Brings Community Together

Creative Souls Café hosted an all-day benefit event Aug. 19 to remember and support the families of two young ladies tragically taken too soon: Hannah Marie Nelson, 24, of Dade City and Ashley Plummer, 24, of Zephyrhills.

The festivities kicked off at 10 a.m. and alternated between live music, auctions, a 50/50 raffle, and a mini poker run. Special meals were served throughout the day consisting of a pancake breakfast, a barbeque lunch, and a spaghetti dinner. Performing bands included the popular Jace Randall Band, Therapy 101, Groovediggers, and more.

Creative Souls owner Anna Bailey estimates the benefit raised near $8,000. The total funds raised will be evenly divided between the families and go towards Hannah and

Ashley’s final funeral expenses. In addition to its goal of financial assistance, the benefit

also served as a celebration of life for the young ladies. “Ashley was very outgoing and kind. She would take

the last dollar out of her bank account if it would help someone in need,” said Rhonda Karpys, Ashley’s mother. “She was my mini me. Everybody loved her.”

“Hannah was such a happy person and very loving,” said Hannah’s mother, Erica Bruce. “She was so many things, it’s hard to say exactly what she was in just so many words. Everything about her was beautiful.”

The poker run began at 8:30 a.m. and included stops at Ralph’s in San Antonio, Cheers 54, and other local spots. After it’s conclusion around lunchtime, the Eagle Riders #3752 presented Ashley Plummer’s parents with a commemorative Eagle Riders coin. They also announced that the poker run had raised more than $600, all of which they chose to donate to Hannah Nelson’s son, Isaiah’s, savings bond.

“Isaiah is seven years old and goes to Pasco Elementary School,” said Bruce. “We try to keep him busy because, as long as he’s busy, he’s fine. It’s when he’s not busy that he starts to think about his mom and things get hard for him.”

Both families were grateful to the staff of Creative Souls for offering their support through the event, as well as to all the members of the Pasco County community who generously donated both their time and money to the cause and for providing comfort in their hour of need.

“I was so overwhelmed when Anna [Bailey] approached me about this event,” Said Karpys. “I hate that sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a community together, but all these people have been amazing, and their support has really helped us out.”

Whether they were aware of it or not, Hannah and Ashley were well known and deeply loved by the people of Dade City and Zephyrhills. And now, they will be deeply missed by them as well.

Pets of the Week

Creamsicle arrived at Pasco County Animal Services after his owner passed away. He can be shy but after a few minutes he does warm up. He has lived with other cats but we always recommend a slow introduction with any new family member.

Texas is a 1 year old pup that arrived as a stray. This pup passed his dog to dog intro and we would love for you to bring your pup for a meet and greet. He is a playful boy who loves to run and socialize. You can fi nd Texas at Pasco County Animal Services.
