staff, who then strap you in to a safety harness and equip you with a pair of gloves.

A safety briefing on the park’s eight aerial courses precedes any zip line action. The courses range in difficulty from easy yellows to difficult double black diamonds.

The trails range from rope swings, rickety wooden bridges, paths made of chain link and even just a simple tight wire to walk across. While balance is the

name of the game for these challenging courses, there’s always a wire to hold, or cling to, in order to stay upright.

The zip lines are scattered throughout the courses and can be heard throughout the property as someone whizzes through the air. The more difficult courses are so because their elements are longer and higher in the air, getting scarily close to the tops of the tall trees that encompass the park.

At any given time, staff members are there to make recommendations, help out if a climber is stuck, or yell encouragement to a hesitant climber.

Birthday parties are a common occurrence at Tree Hoppers and are perfect for energetic young ones. A ground-level “little lemurs” course was also recently added so children ages 1-5 can enjoy an obstacle course of their own. Children are allowed to traverse the easier aerial courses depending on their age and they must be supervised.

Typically, a session gives the guest

about three hours in the park. While many don’t last that whole time, kids are good at getting their money’s worth, according to Ahmber Palmer of Tree Hoppers.

As spring becomes summer, Palmer and the rest of the staff are ready for their busiest season. Generally weekdays are slower but with kids out of school they are looking forward to the action.

Rates are generally fixed, but some special pricing is available around holidays or special local events. Themed days are also a fun event to look out for, with recent ones including pajama day and Nerf day.

A Tree Hoppers staff person helps a group of trainees get into their harnesses.

Tree Hoppers is able to accommodate many different group events including birthdays. Nolan Stephens, 11, celebrated his birthday at the park last week after two hours on the lines and structures.

Kids Stay Healthy At Day CampThis week children attended the UF/IFAS Pasco

County Extension Farm to Table Summer Youth Camp where they learned how to grow their own food, about the importance of attaining fruits and vegetables in their

diet, and how to conserve water. The camp featured hands-on activities in the

classroom, paired with interactive lessons in the garden. Daily science experiments were also utilized.

Held at the Pasco County Farmden and Community Garden building on 14th Street, the kids harvested vegetables from the garden and were able to prepare their own healthy snack.

Planned Progress Sought

The third and final workshop envisioning the future shape of U.S. 301 brought a couple dozen concerned citizens to Alice Hall Community Center on Friday.

Hosted by Renaissance Planning and Pasco County Planning and Development, the workshop unveiled the collective vision of a Model Development Code for the rolling, pastoral 5.5 miles between Zephyrhills and Dade City.

The idea is to create a corridor for mixed use and to keep the hilltops and vistas as green as possible.

“We want to preserve the hills and natural features … the last thing we want to do is go put in a big box [store] on top of a hill,” said David Nelson, a project manager with Renaissance Planning.

He said his firm focuses on how ‘multi-modal’ corridors are developed. Multi-modal improvements refer to how pedestrian, bicycle, vehicle and transit can coexist in a safe, logical way.

“We know it’s coming,” Nelson said of the development push that is seemingly blanketing Pasco County.

“We don’t want 301 between Zephyrhills and Dade City to turn into another Dale Mabry or State Road 60 in Brandon.”

Nelson explained elements of the vision map as character areas, such as residential preservation, countryside, valley vista, etc., and described form-based code as a zoning tool based on the physical nature of an area.

“It uses physical form rather than land uses as the organizing principal” for zoning categories, Nelson said.

Smita Ambadi, the principal planner of the county’s Planning and Development

Department, said members of Dade City and Zephyrhills governments have been working in concert with Pasco County on the 301 vision.

But not everyone was on board with the plans.

One by one, audience members voiced their concerns and fears that unbridled development and the ensuing traffic are going to overload the corridor.

“Does anybody think of the roads first?” asked one exasperated attendee, who described the glut of State Road 54 subdivisions as a disaster.

“Go out to Wesley Chapel at 5 o’clock and you’ll be saying, ‘What idiot thought this was a good idea?’” said the attendee.

Renaissance is to give its final draft to Pasco County by June 15 and the county has a June 30 deadline to submit the plan to the state.

The project is funded through a grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Photographer Joins Search For America’s Beautiful ChildrenAs part of Beauty Revived, a photography movement,

Aubrey Bahr is asking for nominations for beautiful children in the Tampa Bay area to be featured in a national magazine.

The beauty of these children will not be measured by their looks. No, these children will be chosen because of their real beauty, their courage and their countenance. The child chosen through the nomination process will be gifted a complimentary Storytelling session with Aubrey Bahr and a feature in the Real Beautiful Children’s issue of Beauty Revived magazine.

Beauty Revived is a movement that celebrates women and children with real beauty. Photographers donate sessions to these women and children and their stories are featured in their magazine and at www.beautyrevived.com.

Hundreds of photographers applied to be a part of the

Beauty Revived 50 Beautiful Children’s campaign and Aubrey Bahr of Aubrey Bahr Storyteller was chosen to find a deserving child to photograph.

“I believe in the message that Beauty Revived shares and I am honored to be able to feature a beautiful child from our local community. Please spread the love so we can find the perfect deserving child for this opportunity,” Bahr said.

Bahr will be accepting nominations from May 30-June 10 and will then choose one to donate a photography session to. The child chosen will be an example of real beauty and will have shown their beauty by their service, grace in defeat, and kindness when tried.

“It is my hope that this special child will have these moments to cherish forever, and share a little piece of their courage with the world,” Bahr said.

Beauty Revived was started two years ago as a way for

photographers to use their lens for good and shine light on the real beauty that was happening in our communities. In the last year and a half, more than 500 women, girls and children have been featured on their website and magazine.

“As a high school senior photographer, I started Beauty Revived because I saw the power that a photographer has in shaping perception and altering dialogue on beauty,” said Michelle Gifford, Beauty Revived founder.

“The photographers who participate in our campaigns not only have great technical and artistic talent but also have big hearts and a desire to be more than just a picture taker. They want to be a photographer who changes the world with their work,” Gifford said.

Visit www.beautyrevived.com for more information about Beauty Revived. Visit www.abstoryteller.com to nominate a deserving child.
