In April the provisions of the Central Valley Basin Plan Amendment for The Control of Pyrethroid Pesticides Discharges became effective. The program of implementation includes an initial 2 year period to conduct baseline and trend monitoring in areas where pyrethroid levels have not been thoroughly assessed and a year following that to develop management plans if triggered. The Basin Plan Amendment is focused on six pyrethroids (see below) which even in low concentrations can impair aquatic life beneficial uses. It is important to implement effective agricultural management practices to control discharges of pyrethroids to avoid costly management plans. In May 2019 detections above limits were recorded at the Grand Island Drain monitoring site. Best management practice to avoid surface water contamination include source control efforts, improved pest management and use of alternative pesticides to reduce pyrethroid use, application practices that reduce potential for overspray and drift, and practices that reduce or slow runoff, and reduce or capture sediments in runoff such as vegetation and improved water management. These practices are generally effective, but whether the practices will result in consistent attainment of pyrethroid concentrations below the values being considered as triggers is not known. Diazionion Exceedance In October 2017 there was an exceedance in Diazionon at the Grand Island Drain monitoring station. There has not been an exceedance since this time. If your operation uses diazionon based pesticides it is important to be aware that the careful application of this pesticide is critical to avoid further exceedance, maintaining high quality surface water, and avoiding costly management plans. SAWQA helps to provide the easiest, least cost option for irrigators to meet state regulations and continue to farm and protect natural resources.

REPORTING SEASON IS STARTING

WATER QUALITY RESULTS

Fall and Winter is the reporting

season for the Sacramento/

Amador Water Quality Alliance.

All of your annual reporting can be

done online. The Data

Management Tool (DMT) can be

accessed by visiting the

AmadorRCD.org/SAWQA

There have been a few changes in

the tool; we are always working to

make reporting as easy for our

members as possible.

There have been some

changes to High Vulnerability

Areas (HVA), this means that

you may be required to do

additional reporting or attend

certification training. The

DMT will identified your

parcels that are in HVA areas.

If you need training, check out the

back page of the newsletter or the

SAWQA website for training dates.
