2 CONSTRUCTION FOCUS

Among the most significant new products ever launched by Caterpillar is the Cat® CT660, the first model in a full line of Class 8 vocational trucks designed to work as transit mixers, refuse haulers, dump trucks and in any application requiring a heavy-duty truck with the reliability, durability and low cost of ownership characteristic of Cat products. Adding even more value to the CT660 are the resources of N C Machinery and Tractor & Equipment Co., which are prepared to sell and service the new vocational truck line.

“This is an exciting historic milestone for Caterpillar,” said Steve Gosselin, vice president of customer services support division. “The CT660 is a natural expansion of the Cat product line and a perfect complement to other Cat equipment on the jobsite. The CT660 is a direct result of Caterpillar’s commitment to continuously develop new products that accelerate the business success of our customers — and its design results from hundreds of hours spent with vocational truck owners, fleet managers and drivers to determine their specific needs.”

Superior power-train and chassisEngine options for the CT660 include the Cat CT11, CT13 and CT15 (CT15 release is 2012) — with displacements of 11.1, 12.5 and 15.2 liters — provide horsepower ratings from 330 to 550 and peak torque ratings from 1,450 to 1,850 lb-ft. The engines are designed specifically for vocational applications, yielding optimum horsepower/torque combinations, while providing customers the flexibility to match power and performance to specific applications and operating conditions.

The engines combine an advanced exhaust-gas-recirculation system with a high-pressure common-rail fuel system, precision intake-air management system and electronic controls to provide an optimum blend of high performance, low emissions and superior fuel economy. The Compact Graphite engine block, designed to deliver unprecedented durability, reduces weight by as much as 500 pounds compared with conventional all-iron designs. Reduced engine weight enables users to increase payloads for added efficiency and profit.

The combination of dual, sequential turbochargers and a precise fuel injection system allows CT Series engines to develop peak torque at lower speeds, a characteristic that reduces shifting and also allows for shifting at significantly lower speeds. The new engines are also designed for fast routine service by providing easy access to components from the valve cover to filters.

A notable transmission option for the CT660 is the Cat CX31 automatic, a reliable, proven performer since 2004 in global vocational applications. The CX31, with six forward speeds and one reverse, is built to complement the torque output of Cat CT Series engines. The transmission features heavy-duty clutches and gear sets that allow full-power shifts, increasing efficiency and productivity, while reducing drive train shock loads.

An electronic control module, mounted directly on the transmission to simplify wiring and to boost reliability, regulates shift points based on throttle demand and vehicle speed. With adaptive shift-control logic, the CX31 can sense driver operating style to balance fuel economy and performance, while assuring easy operation for improved productivity and

safety. Power-take-off options for the CX31 include two side locations and a high-output rear location, which delivers constant live power under all operating conditions.

An aluminum lock-up torque converter in the CX31 allows the CT660 to make quick starts from a dead stop, even with heavy loads. The payoff is increased operating efficiency, resulting from correct speed and torque combinations for different applications and reduced fuel consumption. In addition, the CT660 can be specified with other transmission options, including the manual and UltraShift Plus vocational transmissions built by Eaton.

The CT660 chassis, fabricated of durable, heat-treated alloy steel, provides the full strength of a Class 8 heavy-duty foundation required for accommodating vocational bodies. Inner rail reinforcements are available for both the one- or two-frame liner options. The chassis features a set-back axle and is available in either 116-inch or 122-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab lengths. Both chassis lengths feature an extra-tight turning radius for enhanced maneuvering and driving performance.

Exterior features The CT660 aluminum-alloy cab provides longer life than conventional steel cabs and weighs approximately 250 pounds less. Less weight means larger payloads and potentially higher profits. In addition, an aerodynamically sloped hood increases visibility for the driver and decreases wind drag to improve fuel efficiency. The modular hood design allows customers to replace only damaged sections, resulting in lower repair costs and less downtime. An all-metal grille surround also uses modular design, as does the three-piece, stainless steel bumper.

Large power mirrors, heated to handle inclement weather, are cowl mounted for greater stability and fewer adjustments. For safety, turn signals may be integrated into the mirrors. Halogen headlight bulbs are easy to access, inexpensive to replace, and are protected with impact resistant covers.

Among a long list of safety features built into the CT660 are one- or optional two-piece windshields that are curved and sloped to offer an uncompromised view of the road. Generous door openings, skid-resistant steps, three-point grab irons and ergonomic non-slip door handles combine to make the CT660 exceptionally accommodating to enter and exit.

Interior comfort and convenienceThe spacious cab is thoughtfully designed to help reduce driver fatigue, enhance safety and increase productivity. Premium interior features include an air-suspension driver’s seat, with adjustable lumbar support, that reclines and adjusts to fit any driver comfortably. A premium sound insulation kit, built into the doors, dampens outside noise and keeps the interior remarkably quiet. An effective heating/ventilating/air-conditioning system is designed to keep the cab interior comfortable in any climate, using unique round vents that are positioned for optimum air flow and allow quick defrosting of windshield and side windows.

The CT660 dash and center stack feature easy-to-read gauges that are designed for easy viewing through the steering wheel, and the speedometer and tachometer are combined in one gauge, allowing space for optional gauges required for specific vocational applications. The cab-interior

materials and surfaces, including the integrated floor mat and one-piece rubber seat skirt, are designed for easy cleanup and long life. And drivers will never want for adequate storage space.

The center stack also houses an interface for Product Link, a proprietary Cat telematics system that collects data from on-board systems and transmits the information via satellite and cellular networks to a secure Internet site. The system allows owners and fleet managers to remotely track critical information for more efficient asset management. Product Link is a standard factory installed feature with a complimentary three-year service subscription.

“Our goal was to design and manufacture the ideal truck—the truck that customers have always wished they had for specific vocational applications,” says George Taylor, director and general manager of the Caterpillar Global On-Highway Group. “Our design team paid extremely close attention to all of the customer input we gathered, and we focused on turning that information into practical reality, drawing on Caterpillar’s proven power train experience with on-highway trucks and decades of cab design experience for other Cat equipment.”

The result is evident in the exceptionally capable CT660, reflecting a reliable, durable, fuel-efficient design that couples driver comfort and safety with optimum return on the investment for the owner.

Fifth-generation, family-owned Green Diamond Resource Company has deep roots in the Pacific Northwest. The company was founded in 1890 by Canadian logger Sol Simpson, a man far ahead of his time. He was one of the very first to use horses instead of oxen for the heavy work in the woods, and the company has always taken a long-term, sustainable approach to forestry.

Today, Green Diamond continues to build upon this impressive legacy, staying true to its slogan “Setting the standard in working forests™.” With its focus on sustainable forestry, Green Diamond sponsors and conducts research into habitat management for plants, fish, and wildlife. In 2000, Green Diamond earned approval for a multi-species Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) protecting 51 species of fish and wildlife in its Washington forests. Also in 2000, Green Diamond began a botany program in its California woodlands to survey, monitor, and protect sensitive plant species.

Green Diamond harvests predominantly redwood and Douglas-fir. Overall they own about 800,000 acres, with 320,000 acres in Washington alone. They follow a logging plan and tend to rotate their activity eastward in the winter and westward the rest of the year, harvesting less than 2% of their lands each year.

The company builds and maintains its own logging roads. According to Bill Mehl, Road Construction Supervisor, the company has over three-thousand miles of logging roads on its Washington lands. They build or recondition between 80 and 100 miles per year, running a 14-man crew, and keeping their three Cat motor graders in pretty constant use. They try to work a year-and-a-half ahead to allow for the flexibility to react to market demands. “Their goal,” Bill said, “is to have everything for next year

roaded this year, plus some extra on top of that.”

Roy Meier, Maintenance Supervisor, stated that “Green Diamond relies heavily on Cat equipment to get it all done. We’re a long-time Cat customer.” For roadwork, they have a 966C and a 966D, two D8Ks, a D8N, three 140Hs, and a 345B L. On the logging side, they have several 330Cs and Bs. All in, Green Diamond owns nearly 20 pieces of Cat equipment.

While there are many reasons why they prefer Caterpillar, Cat’s superior guarding and cab ergonomics are at the top of the list. They also like the way Cat machines maintain their quality even after eight to ten years of what Roy and Bill agree is “extreme use.”

Cab design is extremely important, since a comfortable operator has proven in their operation to be more productive. As Roy described it, “Cat definitely leads in this area. They do an extremely good job in designing a cab you can spend a lot of time in.”

Their large Cat fleet not withstanding, when they bought a new Cat 966H in 2008, they did extensive performance trials with the Cat and two other brands, bringing the prospective machines out to one of their own sites. In the end, they chose the operator freedom that Cat provided, as well as the visibility from the cab. Ron also liked the fact that the Cat had the Oil Level Checks at ground level. Overall the consensus was that the Cat 966H was simply the better machine. Roy remarked, “The other machines weren’t bad, but a Cat is a Cat.”

In 2009, Green Diamond’s D8N, bought in 1997, had reached a stage at which it either needed to be rebuilt or to be replaced. As with every decision to rebuild or replace a

particular machine, their final choice for the D8 was based on a number of factors. First and foremost, they knew and trusted the machine — they had had it a long time and knew its complete maintenance record. Likewise, it had had one, conscientious operator, who was very comfortable with the machine and its controls. After examining new and used replacement options, the final decision was to rebuild.

Once that decision was made, the work was done at N C Machinery’s Chehalis branch. It needed to be done quickly, and the branch got the work completed in 45 days. N C PSSR Greg McClelland was instrumental in helping develop the best bang-for-the-buck for the rebuild. The Green Diamond team worked closely with Greg to scope the rebuild, focusing on internal wiring, hoses, engine, drive train, and final drives, as well as rebuilding the inside of the cab and replacing the rails. Bill stated that “Greg was extremely responsive. We really liked the flexibility of the rebuild options that Greg provided us.”

N C Service Tech Todd Thompson was the lead on the rebuild. Even though the job was on a fast track, Bill and Roy were pleased that there were no shortcuts taken during the rebuild process. “Todd and all the technicians were very professional.”

In the time since the rebuild was completed, Green Diamond has put over 800 hours on the D8N, and there have been no issues with the machine. Bill says, “It has run trouble free since being rebuilt. The credit goes to the N C service and parts departments.”

Bill also is very pleased with N C Sales Representative Mike Gilbert. “Mike is very knowledgeable. He’s done an excellent job of helping spec equipment for us.” When Green Diamond bought a 430E in 2008, Mike suggested they buy a 4-way bucket. Bill said, “That particular recommendation has come in very handy for us. The people at N C make sure the machine is spec’d out to meet our needs.”

Summing up why a leader in its field like Green Diamond chooses Cat and N C, Roy said: “We always want to push for value. We want to be able to make reductions in field labor and call outs. The bottom line is that Cat quality and the responsive support of N C Machinery have made Cat machines a valuable addition to our business.”

Green Diamond’s D8N was rebuilt at N C Machinery’s Chehalis branch. Since then it has logged over 800 trouble-free hours. A stump splitter is attached to the multi-shank rippers.

Roy Meier, N C PSSR Greg McClelland, and Bill Mehl stand by the rebuilt D8N.

The D8N and the 966H are part of Green Diamond’s extensive road construction machine fleet.

“The bottom line is that Cat quality and the responsive support of

N C Machinery have made Cat machines a valuable

addition to our business.”Roy Meier, Maintenance Supervisor

What are U.S. EPA Tier 4 regulations and how do they compare to Tier 3?In 2004 the EPA published the final rule introducing Tier 4 emission standards, which are to be phased-in over the period of 2008-2015. The Tier 4 standards require that emissions of particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) be further reduced by about 90%. Tier 4 emissions levels are similar to those required by the 2007-2010 standards for on-highway engines.

When do the new regulations begin to apply?Tier 4 Interim emissions regulations will be phased in by engine power category, followed by Tier 4 Final standards. The Tier 4 engine power categories are expressed in kilowatts (kW). Tier 4 began in 2008 for all engines under (<) 19 kW, and for those greater than or equal to 19 but less than 56 kW (19 ≤ kW < 56). For engines in the 130 ≤ kW ≤ 560 category, and those in the category for above 560 kW, Tier 4 Interim applies in 2011. Finally, for the 56 to 130 kW (56 ≤ kW < 130) category, Tier 4 Interim applies in 2012. Tier 4 Final standards generally are applicable three years after the Tier 4 Interim start date.

Do Tier 4 regulations only impact the U.S.?Similar regulations will impact the European Union and likely Canada and Japan. In the EU the regulations are called Stage IIIB/IV; in Japan they are called Step 4. Neither Japan nor Canada have completed adoption of Tier 4/Step 4, but we expect them to do so in the near future. In the EU the regulations do not apply to engines < 19kw or engines >560kW at this time and we expect Japan to be the same as the EU. The regulation in Canada is expected to be essentially identical to the U.S. regulation.

What is Tier 4 Interim vs. Tier 4 Final?Tier 4 Interim regulations began in 2011 for most power categories and Tier 4 Final is phased in beginning in 2014. Tier 4 Interim is intended to enable a gradual phase in to final regulations for manufacturers. Tier 4

Final regulations require additional reductions in NOx. Alternative phase-in periods from Interim to Final are intended to provide time to transfer technology from highway engines to non-road engines.

What fuel restrictions will products have?Tier 4 Interim products require Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel containing a maximum of 15 ppm sulfur as opposed to LSD (Low Sulfur Diesel) which contains 500 ppm sulfur maximum.

Tired of The bid process?

Blaine County lies east of Havre in the Northern Great Plains. In the winter, temperatures usually average near 0°F, but severe winter temperatures of -25°F to -35°F are not uncommon. In this part of the state, winter winds create deep snowdrifts. According to Tom Fairbank, Blaine County Road Superintendent, the winter of 2010-2011 was the worst since 1978, with snow lasting a month-and-a-half longer than average. In the northeastern parts of the county, snow was estimated to be 300 to 400% above normal.

Given the unusually severe winter, Tom was especially glad to have a fleet of (6) Cat® 160M motor graders on their side.

Tom reports the County is very pleased with their new M-Series graders for the following reasons:

• Operator Comfort. The Blaine County road crews have found the M-series cabs to be much more comfortable to operate than previous motor graders. The machines feature suspension seats with adjustable lumbar support, ergonomically-placed controls, and easy to read in-dash gauges and warning lights. Tom remarked, “Comfortable cabs allow the operators to work longer without fatigue. It has been very important this

year as crews were working 10-12 hour days, plus weekends in the northeastern part of the county due to the heavy snow.“

• Joystick Controls. These controls were very quick and easy to learn and significantly reduce wrist motion adding to the operators’ comfort. “My guys were able to get right to work with them. With

snow removal already in full swing, there wasn’t time for a long learning curve,” said Tom. “As well, with the joystick controls, my operators can now work sitting down, instead of having to stand in sometimes awkward positions for long stretches at a time.” Tom Fairbank knows that significantly increased operator comfort contributes to safer working

conditions, and no other motor grader can compare to the Cat M-Series in terms of ergonomics.

• Weight and Horsepower. The extra weight and power of the M-Series have meant that his crews hardly had to chain up at all, even under conditions where an inferior machine would have had to be chained up. Additionally, the added weight means the final finished grade is better.

• Increased Visibility. The 160M’s raised cab, one-piece front window, large side windows, and wide, sloped rear window, offer clear views all around the machines. “My operators appreciate the visibility improvements.”

• Safety. Another M-series feature that his crews like is the Operator Presence

Looking for the Best Value for Your Constituents? Look No Further than the M-Series Motor Grader!

CASE STUDy:Blaine County, MontanaRoad Department

“There is simply no comparison. They’re safer, more comfortable, and they create a better-finished surface.

They are really easy to operate and the best graders we’ve ever had for snowplowing.”Tom Fairbank, Blaine County Road Superintendent

Do You Know Your Alternatives?

N C Machinery and Tractor & Equipment Co. have successfully bid contracts in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming which may allow for cooperative (“Piggyback”) purchasing. This takes much of the work and frustration out of the bid process and also takes the risk out of receiving the wrong machine and support network to meet your needs. In the end, we can help you deliver the best value to your constituents.

• Avoid the time-consuming process of putting bids together

• Avoid time spent waiting for responses • Avoid the unpredictability of a low-bid

scenario

• Receive greater value from your equipment through lower maintenance costs, higher productivity, and greater uptime

• Receive industry-leading post-sale support from N C Machinery and Tractor & Equipment Co.

We can provide cooperative (“Piggy-back”) purchasing options for many products in many of the states we serve, including Backhoe Loaders, Wheel Loaders, and Motor Graders.

We also proudly support the NJPA (National Joint Powers Alliance) Consortium Contract #100907, which allows for the purchase of over 100

different Caterpillar models through a nationally leveraged contract, regardless of the size of your operation. Learn why thousands of governmental and non-profit agencies currently participate in this nationally recognized, member-owned cooperative at: http://govbidspec.cat.com/NJPA.

System. This feature keeps the parking brake engaged and hydraulic implements disabled until the operator is sitting down and ready to work.

• Dealer Support. The support Blaine County receives from T&E, the local Cat dealer, is very good. According to Tom, “If they don’t have the parts we need on hand, they have them to us overnight. If we need a tech they’re usually here the same day.”

Asked to sum up his impressions of his new M-Series motor graders compared to previous graders, Tom said, “There is simply no comparison. They’re safer, more comfortable, and they create a better-finished surface. They are really easy to operate and the best graders we’ve ever had for snowplowing.”

How To Make Safer Work Zones Damage or injuries often occur on the jobsite when a worker enters a work zone without informing fellow employees in the area.

Create Recognizable Boundaries – Help workers recognize patterns in operating systems for all onsite heavy

equipment. – Clearly define the boundaries of all work zones, paying special attention to areas where the work zones

intersect and overlap.

Communication Training Train employees on the importance of jobsite communication, such as: – Keeping track of others in the work zone and letting them know where you are at all times. – Establishing eye contact with co-workers before entering their work zone. – Making sure there is two-way communication whenever it is necessary to enter a work zone. – Never entering another person’s work zone until the employee active in that zone acknowledges your presence. – Always informing coworkers when you leave their work zones.

By Robert “Bobby” Bond, N C Machinery and T&E Safety Director

At N C Machinery and Tractor & Equipment Co., the safety of our employees and others is top priority. We are constantly reviewing best safety practices with our employees and have developed a safety culture that is in-line with our motto: “Safety. Always the Right Choice.”
