Saturday Morning Art Classes offer quality art instruction for interested and gifted students throughout Central Ohio. CCAD’s program is modeled after our renowned college-level foundation studies program, enabling youth to develop superior skills and gain a strong background in the visual arts. CCAD faculty and area arts professionals provide instruction, with CCAD students assisting in the classroom.

Children are guided through diverse artistic experiences to increase their skill level and exposure to a wide variety of techniques and media. Classes develop students’ creativity and imagination, while expanding their aesthetic and cultural sensitivity and stimulating a vital interest in the visual arts. All courses are skills-based and designed to impart the greatest amount of technical training and exploration of materials suitable for the grade level.

All lessons are sequential and age appropriate. Classes are kept small; each has an instructor and an assistant to ensure one-on-one instruction time for every student. Instructors are chosen for their dedication to education in the visual arts and their own particular strengths as artists.

Saturday Morning Art Classes run for two 10-week terms during the school year. Early elementary grades explore a variety of media and techniques designed to increase the student’s awareness of art as well as foster creativity. Fifth-grade students may choose from three course offerings geared to their grade level and intended to grow their skills and creative thinking. Upper-level students may choose from an extended menu of courses designed to increase skills and provide a more intensive work situation.

COURSES FOR GRADES 1–4 FIRST GRADE // YOUNG ARTISTS: GETTING STARTEDFirst-grade students are exposed to many different materials and techniques. Children are encouraged to explore and experiment with pencils, crayons, pens, paint, clay, and assemblages using a variety of materials. Students learn to use materials in new and unusual ways, manage and care for their supplies, and express themselves in creative ways.

SECOND GRADE // YOUNG ARTISTS: BUILDING SKILLS Second-grade students experiment with materials and techniques in a variety of ways. Painting, drawing, and sculpture are all explored using pencils, inks, pastels, tempera, novelty papers, clay, and found materials. Creativity and experimentation are fostered through a wide selection of projects.

THIRD GRADE // YOUNG ARTISTS: EXPLORING MATERIALS Third-grade students learn new techniques with familiar materials and experiment with new media including printmaking, assemblage, and acrylic paint. Learning to observe and discuss artwork and developing an art vocabulary are included in the third-grade classes.

FOURTH GRADE // YOUNG ARTISTS: FINDING YOUR VOICE Fourth-grade students are introduced to new materials (charcoal, watercolors, oil pastels, and fibers) and techniques that encourage creativity and an ongoing exploration of what materials can do. Students learn how to increase the naturalism in their work through shading, proportions, and observation.

CREATING CHARACTERSStudents learn how to develop characters from 2D into 3D. This course encourages confidence in the design process by actively engaging students in the many steps it takes to create a work of art from ideation to fruition. Students are introduced to various historical and contemporary artists, with a focus on bolstering the development of personal narrative through art from the foundation of a sketch.

DIGITAL ARTStudents explore the elements of composition using photographs, scanned images, and Photoshop in CCAD’s extensive computer imaging facilities. Emphasizing creativity, personal narrative, and fun through design, this class helps establish a strong understanding of the foundations of design and digital media, bedrock for any student’s future artistic interests.

DRAWING INTO COLORStudents in this course develop their observational skills using line, shading, and proportions. A myriad of drawing mediums are explored to enhance students’ technical skills and encourage a greater understanding of the concepts of proportion and perceived volume, while encouraging creativity to produce new and original artwork.

3D ILLUSTRATIONLearn basic modeling techniques to create 3D narrative artwork. Students are led through the process of character development from sketch to final 3D form. Students are encouraged to reach deep into their imaginations and create fantastical figures with an eye to story, concept, characteristics, and environment.

ART AND TECHNOLOGYEmphasizing the computer and camera as tools, this course explores creativity and personal vision, helping transform the way students think about computers, art, and photography. Using CCAD’s extensive computer imaging facilities, students create unique works extending the possibilities of an image and highlighting their creativity through image manipulation and composition.

BEGINNING PAINTINGBeginning Painting expands students’ understanding of color theory as it applies to observational painting. Students explore a variety of paint materials from tempera to acrylic, watercolor, and more. Traditional painting techniques as well as experimentation are used to guide students toward greater confidence in the medium and in their ability to create unique, expressive works.

DESIGNThis course is a formal introduction to the elements and principles of design, a cornerstone of critical thinking and creative problem solving. Using a variety of media and techniques, the class builds a student’s ability to make critical judgments about art and create well-designed works.

DRAWING INTO COLORStudents are encouraged to build a strong foundation of drawing skills. This class investigates the technical skills of drawing including color theory, mark making, line, value, composition, observational drawing, and abstraction.

ILLUSTRATED COMICSIn this course, students learn how illustration, ideas, script, layout, and media work together to tell a compelling story or illustrated comic. Supporting students’ discovery of their own ideas through drawing skills and illustration techniques, this class helps each student to realize and pursue ideas and imagination through narrative art.

ANIMATIONStudents investigate the fundamentals of animation including character design, timing, and movement. Utilizing CCAD’s leading-edge hardware and software, students gain an understanding of how to create the illusion of life.

DIGITAL DESIGNDigital Design concentrates on the basic elements of electronic art while teaching the processes used by successful graphic artists. Students learn about quality composition, image selection, use of typography, and basic web page design, as well as getting an introduction to blogging, microblogging, and personal branding and logo development.

DRAWINGStudents explore perspective, proportions of the human figure, relationships between objects, and measured drawing to further develop their observational drawing skills. This course encourages an expanded understanding of the elements of design as they apply to observational drawing in a variety of materials, while helping students develop a greater art vocabulary and ability to analyze their artwork, as well as that of others, through group critiques.

FOUNDATIONS OF PAINTINGThis course introduces observational painting techniques by working from still-life set-ups with a focus on basic color theory in acrylic and oil paints. Students explore traditional painting methods through direct studio experience and studying the work of historical and contemporary painters. Color theory and mixing as they relate to representational painting, basic compositional strategies, safe handling of materials, and good studio practices are discussed and employed.

PHOTOGRAPHYThis course focuses on digital photography with an emphasis on process, craft, editing, and printing. Students learn how to shoot better images while exploring light, motion, color, and composition. In addition, the course teaches a brief history of photography, how to critique images, and how to make several final types of prints, including sun prints, transfers, and digital.

SCULPTUREThis course introduces the media and processes used in the practice of sculpture. Using materials ranging from polymer clay to wood, students investigate additive and subtractive methods with projects that explore the varied sculptural approaches of assemblage, installation, and carving.

COURSES FOR GRADES 10–12Students may choose one 10-week course per term. Please select a different class each term.

CERAMICSStudents are introduced to the basic skills of throwing, hand building, and glazing. Good design, balance, and visual flow in form are stressed in this fast-paced class. Through demonstrations and presentation of the rich history of ceramics students learn about different firing methods and surface treatments. They are encouraged to develop a small body of work, from a set of functional cups to non-functional sculptures, and are urged to develop a personal style and unique approach in this ancient medium.

DRAWINGStudents explore of advanced drawing techniques to increase their ability to interpret 3D objects as images on a 2D surface. Significant focus is placed on understanding the elements, principles, techniques, and materials used in the presentation of artistic ideas. Projects are designed to produce skillful qualities and uncover individuality and style.

FIGURE DRAWING An integral part of an arts education is drawing; more specifically, drawing from the nude model. This course focuses on drawing issues related to working from the nude model. Areas of special importance are proportions in relationship to bony landmarks, dynamics of movement through gesture drawing, likeness through portrait studies, and light and form. Extended poses predominate, providing opportunities for portfolio enhancement.

INTAGLIO Beginning with concept drawings, students progress through the process of intaglio printing: transferring images to a metal plate, etching, use of the printing press, and pulling an edition of prints. Basic procedures, techniques, and aesthetics of metal printmaking are addressed.

INTRODUCTION TO FASHION DESIGN Students explore the many aspects of the fashion design world in this fast-paced introductory course. Different areas of fashion are the focus each week, including color trends; fashion illustration and layout; construction of garments; fibers and fabric; dyeing and finishing; flat sketches; and merchandising. Lectures and activities lead to a basic understanding of these fundamentals.

» GRADES 10–12

OIL PAINTING Painting techniques including color mixing, washes, brushstrokes, and proper paint handling are addressed. Historical and contemporary paintings are presented as a means to prompt aesthetic judgment and dialogue. Students are provided the opportunity to spend extended time on paintings, incorporating good composition, color theory, and strong underlying drawing.

PHOTOGRAPHYThis course focuses on traditional photographic methods and historical practices with an emphasis on individual style, aesthetically pleasing composition, and quality execution. Students expand their knowledge of image manipulation through light, motion, structure, and process, drawing upon contemporary artists and processes for inspiration and insight.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENTStudents interested in applying to a college program of art and design are strongly advised to enroll in this course, which helps them develop their own voice while creating dynamic pieces for a portfolio. Information regarding exhibitions, college entrance requirements, and strategies for the portfolio are provided. Parents are included in informational sessions about the importance of the portfolio and the admissions process.

SILKSCREEN & RELIEF Students explore experimentation within processes through the use of a variety of printing methods in the CCAD printmaking labs, beginning with concept drawings and proceeding to an edition of prints. Students learn about the historical and current day contexts of printmaking and try their hands at silkscreen, linoleum, and various forms of monoprints.

WEB DESIGN Students in this course utilize Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver software, all provided in CCAD’s Mac labs. Basic design tenets are discussed and applied to projects in order to guide students to completion of their own Websites. Type, graphics, tables, frames, links, and basic animations are discussed. In-class exercises will lead to a basic site that can be uploaded. Prior basic computer skills and knowledge are recommended but not required to register for this course.

» Classes can fill quickly; students are encouraged to register as early as possible.

» Enrollment is processed in the order received on a first-come, first-served basis. Any registration received prior to the opening of registration will be returned.

» Payment-in-full is required in order to register; no partial payments are accepted.

» Due to space and security considerations, students are not permitted to attend any class for which they are not registered.

» Class changes must be requested through the Continuing and Professional Studies office and are granted on a space-available basis.

» Registration confirmation, room assignments, parking information, and a campus map are emailed to all registered students immediately after registration.

» Registration closes one week prior to the start of classes.

REGISTRATION

FEESThe fee for one term of classes is $250 and includes tuition, registration, and all supplies.

Payment-in-full is required upon registration. Partial payments are not accepted.

REFUND POLICYRefunds are granted according to the following schedule:

» One full week prior to start of class: 100% refund less $75 administration fee

» After first class but before day of second class: 60% refund

» After second class but before day of third class: 40% refund

» No refunds thereafter

All students may compete for scholarships valued at $100. There is no entry fee for the competition. Additionally, students may apply for need-based scholarships valued at $175. Scholarships may only be applied to Saturday Morning Art Classes.

All scholarship applicants must submit one drawing. Please follow these guidelines:

» Student’s original artwork done without help

» Still-life drawing of common objects. We suggest an arrangement of 5–10 objects, such as small boxes, bowls, cups, and other simple objects on a table. Draw these objects as you see them, try to fill the page, and add details.

» Maximum size is 8.5 x 11 inches

» Black and white only, using pencil, ink, or marker

» Spend approximately one hour on the drawing

» Fill out the scholarship application and firmly affix to the back of the drawing. This form may be copied. (This form may not be used to register for classes.)

» Must be received by the Continuing & Professional Studies office no later than 5 p.m. on October 15, 2012, for consideration for Spring 2013 classes, and June 15, 2013, for consideration for Fall 2013 classes.

All entrants are encouraged to do their best. Judges look for students who demonstrate a high level of interest, effort, and creativity. The drawing should include a lot of interesting elements while exhibiting good compositional qualities. Please note that scholarship drawings are not returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is also included.
