RACING LOSES A LEGEND: A.P. INDY DIES AT 31By Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year and one of the world's

great stallions, died peacefully Feb. 21 at his longtime home at Lane's End near Versailles, Ky.

Bill Farish of Lane's End said everyone at the farm was leaning on one another on a difficult Friday. He noted how much A.P. Indy meant to his father, William S. Farish, who bred A.P. Indy with William Kilroy and later came back to own the horse as part of a partnership.

"Anytime Dad visits the farm, his first stop is to go visit A.P. Indy," Bill Farish said, adding that Friday was a tough day for his dad.

A.P. Indy, a son of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, was the leading sire twice, leading broodmare sire once, and among the leaders on both lists multiple times.

Bill Farish said there was no specific illness ahead of A.P. Indy's passing, just the infirmities of old age. He said the loss of A.P. Indy was especially tough on longtime groom Asa Haley.

"There's no way to put into words what A.P. Indy has meant to my family and Lane's End," Farish said.

On the track, a foot bruise and blind quarter crack cost A.P. Indy a chance to run in the Kentucky Derby (G1), which he would have entered off five consecutive wins, including the Santa Anita Derby (G1) over Bertrando. After determining that the Preakness Stakes (G1) came up too quickly on the calendar, trainer Neil Drysdale entered A.P. Indy in the Peter Pan Stakes (G2)—eight days after the Preakness—where he rolled to a 5 1/2-length score over Colony Light at Belmont Park.

That effort prepared A.P. Indy for his classic moment, and he delivered, rallying from fourth to win by three-quarters of a length over My Memoirs in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1).

That victory under regular rider Eddie Delahoussaye affirmed what many had seen from the start for the colt who boasted a pair of Triple Crown winners close up in his pedigree: Seattle Slew—Weekend Surprise, by Secretariat. Purchased by BBA (Ireland) for $2.9 million from the Lane's End consignment, A.P. Indy topped the 1990 Keeneland July Summer Selected Yearling Sale.

Bidding for BBA (Ireland) was Noel O'Callaghan, who outlasted D. Wayne Lukas to purchase A.P. Indy on behalf of Tomonori Tsurumaki, who campaigned him for the majority of his career until a partnership was formed ahead of his final start. Tsurumaki had raced horses for 20 years in Japan and was credited for being completely understanding about the ill-timed injury ahead of the Derby.

A.P. Indy came up short in his first two starts after the Belmont, finishing fifth in the Molson Export Million Stakes (G2) at Woodbine and third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont, where he finished 6 3/4 lengths behind Pleasant Tap. But three weeks later at Gulfstream Park, A.P. Indy turned the tables on that rival and scored by two lengths in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). He was named champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year.

That Breeders' Cup victory was the final race for A.P. Indy, who had even more success as a stallion at Lane's End, where in 1993 he stood for $50,000. By 2002, that fee reached $300,000, where it stayed for seven seasons.

A.P. Indy was the leading sire in 2003 and 2006 and finished among the leading sires six other years in that decade. He was named the leading broodmare sire in 2015 and finished among the leaders seven other times.

His champions include classic winner Bernardini, Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Honor Code, and filly Rags to Riches, who beat the boys in the 2007 Belmont, edging eventual two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

Other champions include Tempera, two-time Canadian champion Marchfield, Canadian champions Eye of the Leopard, Catch the Thrill, and Serenading, and United Arab Emirates Horse of the Year Festival of Light.

"A stallion like A.P. Indy is something you dream about," William S. Farish told BloodHorse in 2006. "Mr. Kilroy and I bred him and sold him. He was a sale topper and went on to be a champion. We syndicated him, and now he's a two-time leading sire. He's one of those dream horses that you hardly ever come by."

A.P. Indy has 29 sons standing at stud.He closed his stallion career in 2011. Even in

retirement, A.P. Indy remained a star as Bill Farish noted he was the highlight of every tour at the farm. No one was any closer to A.P. Indy than Haley.

"He's not a horse to me—he's a person," Haley said in a 2019 BloodHorse story. "But when people come, that's who they want to see—A.P. Indy. If people see me out in public and recognize me, they always ask how he's

doing. He's very close to my heart."In that same story, Bill Farish summed up A.P. Indy's

impact at Lane's End."For Lane's End, he really is the franchise maker.

The farm had been in existence for 20 years before he was born, and the last 30 years with him have been incredible." BH

DEATH OF FILLY TARAZ HITS HARDER THAN MOSTBy Jay Hovdeyt @JayHovdey

I have no idea why, in the scheme of things, those emotionally invested in Thoroughbred racing would

mourn the death of one horse to an exponentially greater extent than any other. That's just the way it is, the way it's always been.

On the morning of Feb. 8, the 6-year-old gelding Double Touch, a horse of modest but admirable accomplishment, collapsed and died following a half-mile work on the Santa Anita Park training track. His death was noted on the Incident Report page of the track's website and, a few days later, in a local newspaper. And that was that. Necropsy pending.

On the afternoon of Feb. 15 in New Orleans, the 6-year-old gelding Classic Covey was pulled up on the backstretch while running in the Fair Grounds Stakes (G3). He had sustained an irreparable leg injury and was euthanized, a sad fact mentioned near the end of a couple of race recaps in industry publications. Otherwise, crickets.

Then came the morning of Feb. 17, at Oaklawn Park, and the awful news that 3-year-old filly Taraz had fractured the bones of her left fore ankle so badly during a workout that there was no choice but to mercifully end her life.

For people following her every move, the death of Taraz was Princess Di in the tunnel all over again. Her growing reputation under the care of Brad Cox was exceeded only by her physical presence—majestic in scope, a royal bay Thoroughbred gazing down from a wide, welcoming blaze. With three easy wins from three starts, two of them in stakes, Taraz seemed only to have scratched the surface of a potential dictated by both athletic ability and her Juddmonte Farms heritage.

Then she was gone, leaving behind the kind of black crepe trail in the racing press and social media usually reserved for champions of far greater accomplishment. Anticipation for her next start, and her next, was replaced by the plaintive cry of what might have been, along with the question that needs to be asked louder

and more often than ever:Why can't they be saved?Any attempt to explain to the wider world the

potentially tragic consequences of extreme lower limb injuries in a racehorse moving at speed usually meets with blank stares. In human athletes, such injuries are commonly repaired. It matters not if terms like "fetlock" and "pastern" are deployed in an attempt to steer the subject toward unique equine anatomy. A hard fact remains—the sport cannot save its injured athletes at a rate that will ever satisfy the general public.

Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, an orthopedic surgeon of world renown, acknowledges this frustration, then once again patiently recites the several reasons severe lower limb injuries can be hopeless: contamination of the wound, the daunting task of reconstruction, the lack of blood supply for healing, the complications of recovery on three good legs.

"There's a lot of fractured ankles we fix successfully, though people don't hear about that very often," McIlwraith said from his home in New Zealand, a few days after the death of Taraz. "We are repairing fractures at a rate far greater than we did even five years ago, but progress is still pretty slow.

The place where we're still making advances is in early diagnosis, in preventing the fracture from happening."

Such advances require funding, however, which is where the racing industry consistently falls short. McIlwraith has for many years advocated the use of fluid biomarkers—akin to the prostate-specific antigen test for cancer—that would send up warning flags for horses as a possible fracture risk.

"We had a project 10 years ago in California where we got up to 79% predictability," McIlwraith said. "But we couldn't combine those tests in a single affordable test. I'm planning on another study, where we think we can finally have a blood test for fifty bucks where you can tell the owner they need to get a bone scan. And those are horses commonly considered sound."

Taraz was considered uncommonly sound by the people in her orbit. And yet she was betrayed by the unforgiving Thoroughbred physiology.

"That's probably the hardest thing to accept," said Garrett O'Rourke, the general manager of Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte operation in the U.S. "There's so much you want to control, and sometimes it's taken out of

your hands. For the most part, we feel we do an awful lot of good, and 99.99% of the time we can predict a potential problem. But then there's the day you walk out the door and get hit by a bus."

Taraz was a daughter of Into Mischief named for an ancient city in modern Kazakhstan that was an important stop along the Great Silk Road linking China and the Middle East. Silk Route, the dam of Taraz, is by Empire Maker, who died Jan. 18 at Gainesway Farm.

"I got to see him a few days before," O'Rourke said of the 2004 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner. "He was a horse who loved to be around people, something he passed on to his grandson, American Pharaoh, and to Taraz as well.

"We were ready to take all possible steps to save her, just to have her come home," O'Rourke said. "But we talked to professionals who have tried in vain to get a horse through what happened to her. Oftentimes you would be putting the horse through more pain as much to satisfy yourself, and that's not fair.

"From a long way out, we felt like she was something special. You live to have a chance to be in the presence of such talent. For all of us here, it hurts to have that taken away." BH

YEOMANSTOWN FILES FOR DISMISSAL IN ZAYAT SUIT CLAIMSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Another defendant named in an amended complaint as part of an ongoing lawsuit between Zayat Stables

and the New York-based MGG Investment Group filed a motion of dismissal of the claims against it.

Mull Enterprises, which does business as Yeomanstown Stud and bought the stallion El Kabeir from the Zayats for $500,000, filed for the claims against it to be dismissed Feb. 17 and for the costs of litigating the claims to be paid. A hearing regarding this motion is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Fayette County (Ky.) Circuit Court.

The amended complaint filed Feb. 11 by MGG added seven defendants to its lawsuit against Zayat Stables for breach of contract and fraud related to tens of millions of dollars in loans. MGG was seeking to regain assets purportedly sold by Zayat Stables that were also collateral for those loans.

In its motion, Yeomanstown Stud denied any fraud occurred when it acquired grade 2 winner El Kabeir in September 2017 and claims MGG did not meet a statutory prerequisite before it took action to repossess the stallion and have any proceeds from stud fees or the sale of his progeny put into trust at the benefit of MGG.

Attorney Thomas Bullock, with Bullock & Coffman in Lexington, cited a Kentucky statute that states a party possessing a security interest or lien against an equine interest that has been sold before the debt has been

discharged cannot take action until it has "pursued a remedy" and "judgment is rendered on the merits of suit or the suit is dismissed with prejudice."

The motion also notes that action taken for the "possession of specific personal property" must commence within two years of the taking and holding of the property, according to Kentucky law.

El Kabeir was sold Sept. 20, 2017, so MGG's attempt to acquire the horse falls outside the statute of limitations, according to the motion. Because MGG is not entitled to the stallion, the motion continued, it also is not entitled to the creation of trust to hold fees and proceeds from progeny sales. BH

BALTAS ARMED WITH VENETIAN HARBOR, LADY PRANCEALOTBy BloodHorse Staff

From Arkansas to California, trainer Richard Baltas is busy with stakes horses this week.

Motion Emotion ran fourth in the Feb. 17 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park. Taishan followed later that afternoon with a fifth there in the Southwest Stakes (G3), and Super Patriot and Lady Prancealot start for the trainer in the Feb. 22 Buena Vista Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park.

As if that's not enough, Baltas gave his star 3-year-old filly Venetian Harbor a half-mile workout under Flavien Prat in a bullet :46 1/5 Feb. 21 at Santa Anita, an effortless first breeze since a 9 1/4-length score in the Feb. 8 Las Virgenes Stakes (G2). The Santa Anita Oaks (G2) and the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland, both April 4, are races under consideration for her next start.

This weekend, Baltas can concentrate on the one-mile Buena Vista with Super Patriot and Lady Prancealot. The latter is expected to be one of the favorites, cutting back in distance after winning the American Oaks (G1T) for 3-year-old fillies in late December. Joe Bravo, who rode her to victory in the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks and in the 1 1/16-mile Pin Oak Valley View Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland, returns in the irons.

"He's 2-for-2 on her, and we had planned to run in this race all the while," said Baltas, a new board member of the California Thoroughbred Trainers organization. "It's a very competitive and tough race, but she's won at a mile before, and we're not going to change her style for this race."

Craig and Josie Arntz, Donald Durando, Jules and Michael Iavarone, and Jerry McClanahan own the 4-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot.

Baltas, whose Oaklawn division is overseen by assistant Aimee Dollase, expects to have about 12 horses there over the course of the meet. His larger stables are in California at San Luis Rey Training Center and Santa Anita.

With a threat of rain overnight and into Saturday for Southern California, Venetian Harbor was one of more than 150 horses who breezed Friday at Santa Anita. Stakes competitors recording five-furlong workouts included American Theorem (1:01 2/5), Eight Rings (1:00 1/5), Higher Power (1:02 4/5), and United (1:01 1/5).

American Pharoah Stakes (G1) winner Eight Rings, unraced since a sixth in the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), was given a winter break by trainer Bob Baffert. Initially behind schedule, he was considered a longshot to be adequately prepared for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), but Baffert now feels the Empire Maker colt has gotten back on the path to stakes readiness, co-owner Jack Wolf said this week.

Wolf's Starlight Racing partnership owns Eight Rings with SF Racing, Madaket Stables, Frederick Hertrich III, John Fielding, Golconda Stables, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.

Magnier, Tabor, and Smith are principals in Coolmore Stud and acquired an interest in the colt after his American Pharoah victory.

Eight Rings worked in company with stakes-winning older horse and stablemate Ax Man. BH

COX EYES OAKLAWN HANDICAP WITH WARRIOR'S CHARGEBy BloodHorse Staff

Razorback Handicap (G3) winner Warrior's Charge returned to training Feb. 21 at Oaklawn Park to

begin preparations for his next major local target, the $1 million Oaklawn Handicap (G2) for older horses at 1 1/8 miles April 18. Whether the bulk of the preparation is at Oaklawn or Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots—where trainer Brad Cox keeps his main divisions—re-mains to be seen.

In his 4-year-old debut in the Feb. 17 Razorback at Oaklawn, Warrior's Charge recorded his biggest victory in frontrunning fashion under Florent Geroux, turning back a bid from Bankit to win by a head. He entered the race off a Dec. 18 allowance optional claiming win at Fair Grounds after being away since a fourth in the Preakness Stakes (G1).

The 1 1/16-mile Razorback was a replay of the colt's three previous victories as Warrior's Charge led at every point of call after being hustled from the gate. He scored two powerful victories last year at Oaklawn, breaking his maiden by six lengths and clearing his first allowance condition by 6 1/2 lengths.

"I don't think he has to be on the lead," said Cox, who trains the son of Munnings for Ten Strike Racing and Madaket Stables. "I think he can sit off horses."

Oaklawn's next major two-turn race for older horses is the March 14 Essex Handicap. Cox plans to be represented in the race by Night Ops, a Feb. 9 allowance-level winner for prominent Arkansas car dealer Steve Landers. Night Ops finished second in the Oaklawn Invitational Stakes last year and third in the first division of the Jan. 25 Fifth Season Stakes.

Also returning to the track Friday for Cox were Wells Bayou and Answer In—second and third, respectively, Monday in the Southwest Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds. Cox said both are candidates for the $1 million Rebel Stakes (G2) March 14, Oaklawn's third of four Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) points races.

Pointed for the next major race for 3-year-old fillies at Oaklawn—the March 7 Honeybee Stakes (G3)—is the Steve Asmussen-trained Wicked Whisper, owner Alex Lieblong of Conway, Ark., told Oaklawn publicity Feb. 20.

From the first crop of Liam's Map, Wicked Whisper breezed five furlongs Feb. 14 in 1:02 at Fair Grounds, where she has been training this winter. She won her debut at Saratoga Race Course last summer and the Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park in her second start. She ended the year with a fifth in the Nov. 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

"But anytime you have one coming off a layoff, you hold your breath," Lieblong said. "She's been working with some good horses. A couple of workmates have been stakes winners. She's worked with (grade 1 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes winner) Basin once that I know of. She's not been hanging around cheap horses."

Though she has largely kept a weekly breezing pattern at Fair Grounds this month, Wicked Whisper did not work Friday, though other Asmussen-trained stakes winners did breeze there. Magic Dance went five furlongs in 1:01 3/5, and Nitrous covered a half-mile in :49 4/5.

The Honeybee is the final major local prep for the April 10 Fantasy Stakes (G3).

In other Oaklawn news, jockey Jon Court, 59, will miss the remainder of the meet with a collapsed lung after being injured in an incident shortly before the fourth race Feb. 13, agent Steve Krajcir said Friday. Court was scheduled to ride first-time starter Line of Faith in the sprint for Arkansas-bred maiden claiming fillies and mares, but he was unseated approaching the gate. Fernando De La Cruz replaced him, and the filly finished third.

Court was Oaklawn's leading rider in 2000 and has 688 victories at the track.

Owner/trainer C. R. Trout reported that his homebred millionaire Shotgun Kowboy has been retired because of a sesamoid fracture. An 8-year-old Oklahoma-bred son of Kodiak Kowboy, Shotgun Kowboy won 15 races, eight stakes, including the 2015 Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park. He was scratched from an allowance-level race Friday. BH

KIRKWOOD KEEPS GALLOP-ONLY PROGRAM AT GULFSTREAM SALEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Kip Elser's Kirkwood Stables will continue to only gallop its entrants during the under tack show for

The Gulfstream Sale as the stable has done for the past two years, rather than push the juveniles through a timed workout.

Elser launched this experiment in 2018 at Fasig-Tipton's select 2-year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park following a conversation during the Saratoga Race Course meet with a friend who proposed pinhooking yearlings without pushing the young horses during the under tack show.

Previous "gallop-only" prospects, offered only at The Gulfstream Sale, had been cataloged as part of the Kirkwood Stables consignment but also under the names Midway Gallop or Gulfstream Gallop so buyers knew what to expect. This year the Gulfstream entrants have been cataloged only under Kirkwood Stables, so Elser wants to be sure buyers know the gallop-only program is still in place.

"We have had very positive results at the sales and on the racetrack," Elser said. "Maybe we leave a little money on the table, but we are selling every horse and reducing the injury rate."

During the first two years of the program, Kirkwood offered 14 juveniles, of which eight were sold in the ring for an average of $121,250. The others that did not meet their reserve prices all found new homes through private sales.

Out of these 14 horses, 11 went on to start in a race, and six became winners. Four of the horses became black-type performers, led by winner Splashy Kisses, a daughter of Blame who was second in the Pocahontas Stakes (G2) and third in the Sweet Life Stakes (G3),

and Defense Wins, a son of Flatter who was third in last year's Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1). Both of these graded stakes horses are trained by Doug O'Neill. Kirkwood also sold stakes-placed winners Irish Hustle, a daughter of Data Link, and Wicked Slider, a gelding by Wicked Strong.

"The better our results on the racetrack, the better our sales results will continue to be," Elser said.

At the upcoming April 1 auction at Gulfstream, Kirkwood will offer the following horses as part of its gallop-only program:

• Hip 13, c, Tapit—Jackpot Joanie• Hip 51, f, Hard Spun—Picturesque• Hip 63, c, California Chrome—Sacred Forest• Hip 89, c, Vancouver—Tela• Hip 117, f, Street Sense—Archers Post• Hip 138, f, American Pharoah—Choice Pearl• Hip 146, c, Declaration of War—Compete• Hip 159, c, Curlin—Desert Classic BH

CALUMET FARM LEADS 2019 KY BREEDERS' INCENTIVE AWARDSBy BloodHorse Staff

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced Feb. 21 the release of the 2019 Kentucky Thor-

oughbred Breeders' Incentive Funds, totaling more than $14.3 million. The incentive fund encourages Thoroughbred horse owners and breeders to conduct business in Kentucky, benefiting the state's economy and ensuring horse racing remains one of Kentucky's renowned industries.

Topping the individual allocations was a $349,428 award to Calumet Farm, the historic Kentucky farm that broke a 57-year drought in 2019 by becoming North America's leading breeder by money won for the first time since 1961.

In addition to Calumet, breeders with awards in excess of $100,000 included Brereton Jones ($166,003), Don Alberto Corp. ($127,668), Gainesway Thoroughbreds ($104,687), Gary and Mary West Stables ($193,803), Godolphin ($277,898), Juddmonte Farms ($144,626), Ken and Sarah Ramsey ($189,025), Pin Oak Stud ($108,743), Spendthrift Farm ($150,757), Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings ($232,459), Three Chimneys Farm ($111,792), and WinStar Farm ($241,269).

Other breeders, such as Machmer Hall, surpassed $100,000 in awards when including partnerships.

"It's an honor to recognize Kentucky breeders for their contributions to the horse racing industry," Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement. "The racing industry is paramount to

a growing economy as it creates jobs and generates tourism dollars for the Commonwealth."

To qualify for the award, a mare must be nominated for the program and remain in the state from the time of breeding until the birth of the foal. The final award amount is contingent on the foal's eventual earnings at the racetrack, and participants submit applications to KHRC to claim the award.

More than 4,100 races were eligible for awards for KBIF horses winning in Kentucky, the U.S., and graded/group wins in Canada, England, France, and Ireland. This year, the number of breeders awarded total 1,443.

The KBIF is funded through a percentage of the sales and use tax on the fees paid when a stallion is bred to a mare in Kentucky. Since 2006, nearly $170 million has been awarded to breeders for winning eligible races across the globe.

Money allocated in 2020 is for wins in 2019.A list of award winners and statistics on races

awarded is available on the KHRC website. BHs Share this story

POTENTIAL STAR JOLIE OLIMPICA HEADS BUENA VISTA FIELDBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Jockey Mike Smith has ridden many high-achiev-ing fillies and mares over his Hall of Fame career,

regularly handling champions Midnight Bisou, Royal Delta, Songbird, Sky Beauty, and Zenyatta.

Now, he's stocking up for 2020.Midnight Bisou remains in training and is overseas

preparing for the $20 million Saudi Cup Feb. 29, and here in the U.S., Smith is loaded with opportunities as the rider of one-eyed wonder Hard Not to Love and Jolie Olimpica, a group 1 winner in her native Brazil and the favorite Feb. 22 over Carressa and Lady Prancealot in the $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes (G2T) going one mile on the Santa Anita Park grass course.

From Brazil where she is 3-for-3, Jolie Olimpica was bought by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms after a victory in the Grande Premio Jockey Club Brasileiro (G1) and then strutted her stuff for her new trainer, Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. In her first start in America, she won the Jan. 11 Las Cienegas Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita at 5 1/2 furlongs on grass.

The 4-year-old daughter of Drosselmeyer sped the distance in a course-record 1:01 over a trip only in use since the fall after Santa Anita suspended sprints down its hillside turf course.

"The best part of the race was running underneath the wire, to be honest with you," Smith said after the race. "She galloped out well within herself, she wasn't winded at all. She should get a mile for sure any day."

Her Grande Premio Jockey Club Brasileiro came at 1,600 meters (about a mile), and she was strong at the finish, pulling away by six lengths after stalking the pace three wide.

Carressa and Lady Prancealot are other last-out graded stakes winners at the Santa Anita meet. Carressa captured the Jan. 20 Megahertz Stakes (G3T) under Victor Espinoza in her first attempt on turf and in stakes, and Lady Prancealot was victorious in the Dec. 28 American Oaks (G1T), a race that came against 3-year-old competition.

The 12-horse Buena Vista is 4-year-old Lady Prancealot's first start outside her age group.

Eastern-based jockey Joe Bravo will travel to Santa Anita for the mount. He rode her to win the Oct. 18 Pin Oak Valley View Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland and was again aboard in the American Oaks.

Lady Prancealot, a daughter of Sir Prancealot, races for Craig and Josie Arntz, Donald Durando, Jules and Michael Iavarone, and Jerry McClanahan. She is trained by Richard Baltas.

The John Shirreffs-trained Carressa, a 4-year-old Uncle Mo filly, is also owned by numerous partners: Mercedes Stables, West Point Thoroughbreds, Scott Dilworth, David and Dorothy Ingordo, and Steve Mooney.

The scheduled post time for the Buena Vista, the fifth race on a nine-race card, is 2:29 p.m. PT under a threat of rain. As of midafternoon Feb. 20, the National Weather Service forecast an 80% chance of showers from Friday night into Saturday in Arcadia, Calif.

Del Mar and Santa Anita canceled race days in the final months of 2019 when heavy rain hit the Southern California area. Tracks in the region are proceeding cautiously in how they approach wet conditions after racing and training over wet, sealed tracks was listed as one of many factors that could have contributed to a spike in breakdowns at Santa Anita last spring. JEAN ELIZABETH, EXTRAVAGANT KID HEAD TAMPA TURF STAKESBy BloodHorse Staff

A limited stakes schedule this weekend has Tam-pa Bay Downs hosting two of the country's

richest open stakes Feb. 22, both for turf sprint-ers at five furlongs: the $100,000 Lightning City Stakes for fillies and mares and the $100,000 Turf Dash Stakes for males. The Turf Dash is the sixth race and the Lightning City is the eighth race on a 10-race card beginning at 12:45 p.m. ET.

There are 14 entrants for the Lightning City, with only 12 permitted to start. Ten have entered the Turf Dash, including the talented 7-year-old Florida-bred gelding Extravagant Kid.

Jean Elizabeth, whose six-race winning streak consists entirely of stakes, headlines the field for the 16th edition of the Lightning City.

A 5-year-old Illinois-bred mare, she has 13 victories and has never finished out of the money in 19 starts. She took the five-furlong Ladies Turf Sprint Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park in her first try on the grass. She also won the Oct. 19 Ontario Fashion Stakes (G3) on Woodbine’s all-weather track, the second win of her streak.

A daughter of Adios Charlie out of the Lit de Justice mare Rooney Doodle, Jean Elizabeth was bred by Larry Rivelli and Richard Ravin, who own her in partnership with Patricia’s Hope. Rivelli, also her trainer, won the 2015 Lightning City Stakes with Richies Sweetheart.

Albin Jimenez has been named to ride Jean Elizabeth from post 9.

Extravagant Kid appears to be coming up to the

Turf Dash in excellent form, with a victory in his most recent start Jan. 18 at Gulfstream in the Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes. The winner of last year’s Zaxby's Sprint Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs is 13-for-40 and finished second in June to Wet Your Whistle in the Highlander Stakes (G1T) on the grass at Woodbine.

Extravagant Kid is owned by DARRS and trained by Brendan Walsh.

Leading jockey Antonio Gallardo has been named to ride from post 8.

Also entered is 10-year-old Florida-bred gelding Pay Any Price, whose 18-for-30 record includes a victory in the 2017 Turf Dash.

Pay Any Price is owned by Matties Racing Stable and Averill Racing and trained by Georgina Baxter.

Pablo Morales will be aboard. BHs Share this story

FRANK'S ROCKETTE TO MAKE SOPHOMORE DEBUT IN ANY LIMITBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Last year, the appropriately named Frank's Rock-ette broke her maiden on debut by 8 3/4 lengths in

June at Churchill Downs and placed second in her next three starts.

That in itself may not make her the bettors' pick Feb. 22, but what might draw attention to the Bill Mott trainee is the class she was racing against.

Twice she finished behind Perfect Alibi—in the Aug. 4 Adirondack Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course and the Sept. 1 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at the same New York track. And in her final race of her 2-year-old season, the Into Mischief filly finished behind Wicked Whisper Oct. 6 in the one-mile Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. Now she will be tested to see whether that form carries over to her 3-year-old season.

In her 2020 debut, the Frank Fletcher homebred is scheduled to take on a field of seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $75,000 Any Limit Stakes going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park.

Frank's Rockette is out of the Indian Charlie mare Rocket Twentyone, who was purchased by Frank Fletcher Racing for $300,000 during the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Fletcher campaigned the mare, and she raced 14 times, winning the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (G3) in her second start. With two other stakes-placed half siblings, Frank's Rockette is her dam's third foal to race.

Frank's Rockette will be ridden by John Velazquez from post 5.

Among the competition are highweights Sound Machine and Yesterdayoncemore. Both will carry 122 pounds, giving away two to four pounds to the field.

Sound Machine, also an Into Mischief filly, races for e Five Racing

Thoroughbreds and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and comes into the Any Limit off a 6 1/2-length score in the Jan. 4 Glitter Woman Stakes. Fellow entrants Lavi and Tale of Success finished behind her in fourth and fifth, respectively, in that 6 1/2-furlong race at Gulfstream.

Sound Machine, who has two wins from four starts, will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione from post 2.

Trained by Patrick Biancone, Yesterdayoncemore began her racing career in Europe but was 0-for-5 when she arrived in the U.S. In her Del Mar stateside debut, she won the Sept. 2 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes going one mile on the grass while in the care of trainer James Stack.

In that test, she defeated subsequent stakes winner Warren's Showtime and the well-regarded Croughavouke, who later placed sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T). Yesterdayoncemore followed that win with off-the-board losses in the Oct. 6 Surfer Girl Stakes for Stack and the Jan. 4 Kitten's Joy Stakes (G3T) for Biancone. All of her U.S. starts have come on the turf.

Luca Panici will be aboard the No Nay Never filly from post 3. BH

BAFFERT COLTS TAKE ON EXAULTED IN SANTA ANITA MAIDENBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Two Bob Baffert-trained colts will take on a salty 3-year-old maiden special weight Feb. 22 at Santa

Anita Park. Both colts were purchased by their respec-tive connections for $500,000 as yearlings.

Spendthrift Farm's Fantastic Day drew the rail in the one-mile test, and Karl Watson, Michael Pegram, and Paul Weitman's Mastering will leave the outside post in the field of eight.

Fantastic Day, a Medaglia d'Oro colt bred in Kentucky by Courtlandt Farm out of the grade 1-placed Pleasant Tap mare Indescribable, will make his debut under jockey J.C. Diaz Jr.

The colt began training at Santa Anita in mid-January and posted a bullet four-furlong work from the gate in :47 1/5 Feb. 16 to be the fastest of 37 at the distance.

Fantastic Day brought his hefty price while consigned by Lane's End to The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York.

Mastering has raced once, finishing sixth in a Feb. 2 maiden race on the same course but a furlong shorter. The son of Street Sense was purchased in 2018 at The October Sale, Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky fall sale, where he was consigned by Eaton Sales.

He most recently posted a five-furlong work Feb. 17 in

1:00 3/5. Mastering will be ridden by Assael Espinoza. The expected heavy favorite Saturday was cross-

entered in the Mine That Bird Derby, but trainer Peter Eurton and Exaulted's connections opted to stay at their home base.

The Twirling Candy colt owned by C R K Stable finished second to another Baffert trainee in his Jan. 19 debut, finishing 3 3/4 lengths behind subsequent San Vicente Stakes (G2) winner Nadal.

The high-class field also includes Yeng Again, a half brother to grade 3 winner and last year's Preakness Stakes (G1) third-place finisher, Owendale. The Carpe Diem colt finished second, missing by half a length, in his Jan. 26 debut.

On the East Coast, Chad Brown trainee Vintage Print will try for the third time to break through the maiden ranks Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The Curlin colt has finished off the board in both of his 2019 starts in New York, and he will try turf for the first time in the one-mile test.

The $1.8 million Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase by OXO Equine is the first foal out of 2015 La Troienne Stakes (G1) winner Molly Morgan.

Reliability, a Tapit colt out of Darley Prix Jean Romanet (G1) winner Announce, will also be among the field of 10. BH

ITHA URGES MEMBERS TO CONSIDER ARLINGTON ALTERNATIVESBy Bob Kieckhefer

The Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association is urging its members to consider out-of-state

alternatives to Arlington International Racecourse for racing this year.

The organization said in a website posting Feb. 19 it "encourages horsemen to submit applications for 2020 stall space at Arlington Park. But Illinois owners and trainers also are urged to consider an alternative plan for racing this summer."

The suggestion stems from a dispute about purse levels and, ultimately, from the decision by Arlington's owner, Churchill Downs Inc., not to apply for a casino license for the track—an action that would have generated millions of dollars in purse money but also would have put it in competition with a CDI majority-owned casino less than 15 miles away.

The current casino landscape in Illinois, including tax rates and the percentage of casino money that track operators would have to commit to horsemen's purses, were other factors CDI cited in not applying for a casino license.

The other major Chicago-area racetrack, Hawthorne Race Course, which conducts Thoroughbred racing and Standardbred harness racing, is building a casino this

year. It has planned a $450 million redevelopment of its property to include a hotel, food hall, sports book, and entertainment theater.

Hawthorne will not conduct Thoroughbred racing this winter and into the spring, as it typically does. Thoroughbred racing resumes there in the fall.

Absent funding from casino revenue and related adjustments, the ITHA said it estimates average daily overnight purses this summer at Arlington will be about $133,000. Arlington said the figure could be closer to $150,000.

"For Arlington to be competitive and ensure the continuation of live racing here, overnight purses this year should be funded at a minimum of $200,000 on average each day," the ITHA said.

Arlington president Tony Petrillo said the track, as of Feb. 20, had "15 or 16 applications on hand, and we've heard from another 26 trainers expressing interest." He said Arlington plans to open the backstretch the second week of April in preparation for a May 1 opener.

Arlington has produced a contract with the same provisions as those in effect for recent years, Petrillo said, and sent it to the ITHA and the Illinois Racing Board. The ITHA has not signed.

"We have told the ITHA leadership, 'If you guys choose not to race, it's you shutting down the industry, not us,'" Petrillo said.

ITHA executive director David McCaffrey, however, said the organization's insistence on sustainable purses is a fight for survival.

"The working men and women of Illinois Thoroughbred racing are fighting to save our very livelihood," he said. "If Arlington has its way, nearly half the money earned for the purse account will leave Illinois—to subsidize its corporate owner in Kentucky via recapture and to fund open stakes. We can't allow that, especially after Churchill (Downs Inc.) shunned Illinois racing by going all-in on its casino down the road while abandoning plans for Arlington's future. Purse account dollars at Arlington should support Illinois jobs and local economic opportunity." BH

IRISH SIRE CASAMENTO DIES AT SUNNYHILL STUDBy Tom Peacock/Racing Post

Sunnyhill Stud has suffered a major loss after the death of resident stallion Casa-

mento at the age of 12.The son of Shamardal had a glittering

2-year-old career for Mick Halford and Sheikh Mohammed, running second in the Boylesports.com Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (G1) as a maiden winner and later landing the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes (G2) and the Racing Post Trophy (now the Vertem Futurity, G1). The following year he added a group 3 in France for Mahmood Al Zarooni.

Casamento served three and two years at Kildangan and Dalham Hall, respectively, before heading to Michael Hickey's Sunnyhill in County Kildare via a season in Sweden.

"Unfortunately, he had a condition in a hind hoof which deteriorated despite surgery and prolonged veterinary care, and there was nothing more that could be done," Hickey explained. "It's very sad. He was a gorgeous horse, a good 16.1 hands, and he was a pleasure to deal with. I'm very grateful to Darley for letting us stand him, and I'm just sorry that this unfortunate occurrence happened."

Casamento was due to be offered again at €3,000 (about US$3,240) this year. His most notable progeny

to date are Kings Will Dream, a winner of the Tab Turnbull Stakes (G1) at Flemington and a contestant in some of Australia's flagship events, and Mark Johnston's Roaring Lion Jockey Club Stakes (G2) scorer and group 1-placed Communique.

Of the early jumping crops, listed bumper winner House Island and City Dreamer, who took a lucrative prize in the U.S., have been his leading lights.

"He got lots and lots of winners and covered 165 mares last year, which shows what a huge loss he'll be," Hickey added.

KENTUCKY DERBY, BC CLASSIC PREPS FEB. 23 IN JAPANBy Bob Kieckhefer

Japan's season heats up Feb. 23 at Tokyo Racecourse with two races with American racing implications—

the February Stakes (G1), a "Win and You're In" for the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), and the Hyacinth Stakes, the third leg of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The February Stakes, run at 1,600 meters (about one mile) at Tokyo Racecourse, is one of only two grade 1 Japanese races run on the dirt. While the country's reigning Horse of the Year, Chrysoberyl, is headed for the $20 million Saudi Cup, the February Stakes retains a big and competitive cast.

Last year's winner, Inti, returns. The 6-year-old son of Came Home is winless in five starts since the 2019 victory but finished third behind winner Chyrsoberyl in Japan's other grade 1 dirt race, the Dec. 1 Champions Cup (G1). He was third again in the Jan. 26 Tokai TV Hai Tokai Stakes (G2) going 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles) on a sloppy track at Kyoto, and trainer Kenji Nonaka is high on his chances.

"I was happy with his last run where he finished third, especially considering he had to carry 58 kilos (almost 128 pounds)," Nonaka said. "His condition will improve for that run, and with just the one turn in this next race, it'll be better for him."

The winner of the Kyoto race is sitting out the February Stakes, but the runner-up, 7-year-old Vengeance is back, with trainer Hiroyuki Oneda hanging his hopes on the veteran's last-race finish.

"He was in good shape for his last run, and among that field he had one of the best closing three-furlong times in the race," the conditioner said.

Several others boast consistent results in dirt racing, albeit at lower levels, and any misfire by the more experienced top-level contenders could produce a surprise.

The race starts with a brief sprint on the Tokyo Racecourse turf onto the backstretch of the dirt course. It continues around the sweeping turn into the uphill stretch run.

The Hyacinth is the third of four races leading to an invitation to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). After the first two legs, Vacation, by Espoir City, leads the competition with 20 points via a victory in the Dec. 18 Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Kawasaki Racecourse. Dieu du Vin, a Declaration of War colt, is second with 10 points after winning the Cattleya Sho in November in Tokyo. Iolite is third with eight points.

None of the leaders return for the Hyacinth. The 14 nominees, including two fillies, feature only two points-holders: Meisho Tensui, a Dunkirk colt who finished fourth in the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, and Daimei Corrida, an Eskendereya colt who reported third in the Cattleya Sho. Each has two points.

The new shooters include two Kentucky-bred American Pharoah colts—Nile River and Cafe Pharoah. Nile River, out of the Smart Strike mare Jeweliana, scored at first asking Nov. 9 on the dirt at Tokyo and has not raced since. Cafe Pharoah, out of the More Than Ready mare Mary's Follies, won his only previous start at Nakayama in December.

Godolphin is represented by Longonot, a Pyro colt who is 2-for-3 with both wins coming on the dirt.

The Cattleya Sho offered points on a 10-4-2-1 scale and the Kawasaki race 20-8-4-2. Things escalate with the Hyacinth awarding 30-12-6-3.

The series concludes March 28 at Nakayama where the Fukuryu Stakes is run for 40-16-8-4 points.

The series is designed to boost interest and wagering on the Run for the Roses among Japanese fans, who eagerly follow the international exploits of their favorites. While it has not yet produced a Japanese winner in Louisville, it has had an impact on the U.S. Triple Crown.

The 2015 Cattleya Sho winner, Lani, shipped to the U.S. and competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown, finishing third in the 2016 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1).

Master Fencer, who finished fourth in the Japanese series, accepted the invitation to the 2019 Derby when the top three points-earners declined. The Just a Way colt finished seventh and was placed sixth after the disqualification of Maximum Security. He went on to finish fifth in the Belmont Stakes and 13th in the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) in July when he was switched to the turf. BH

HONG KONG CLASSIC CUP THE FINAL PRELUDE TO HK DERBYBy Bob Kieckhefer

The waters get deeper and the distance longer in the middle leg of Hong Kong's 4-year-old classic series

Feb. 23 at Sha Tin Racecourse—the final stop before the BMW Hong Kong Derby.

The series began with the Jan. 27 Hong Kong Classic Mile with Golden Sixty winning his fifth consecutive race for trainer Francis Lui and jockey Vincent Ho. Golden Sixty, a Medaglia d'Oro gelding, enters the 1,800-meter (about 1 1/8 miles) Hong Kong Classic Cup as the highest-rated of 10 entries.

The other nine include the second, third, and fourth finishers from the Classic Mile—More Than This, Champion's Way and Beauty Legacy, plus Playa Del Puente, who reported seventh in the January heat.

Lui, who trains both Golden Sixty and More Than This, holds a strong hand in the middle leg of the series.

"Golden Sixty has done what has been asked of him every time," Lui said after the Classic Mile win. "Last race he went 1,400 meters, this race was a mile, and next time will be 1,800 meters in the Hong Kong Classic Cup, so we will take it step by step. If he runs well in the Classic Cup, we will go to the Derby."

Golden Sixty spiked a fever after winning the Classic Mile, casting doubt on his entry in the Classic Cup, but passed a key test Feb. 18, handling a routine morning gallop. If the health issue or the added distance should trouble him, More Than This, a Dutch Art gelding, would still have the trainer's confidence even though he has never ran farther than one mile.

"I think More Than This can handle the Derby distance. … The main target for both is the Derby," Lui said.

An intriguing prospect for the Classic Cup is Enjoying—if only because Australian reinsman Hugh Bowman arrives on the back of two group 1 wins last weekend at Randwick to take the mount for trainer John Moore.

"Hugh has won a Hong Kong Derby for me on Werther, and his confidence

level at the moment, judging from his notable wins last weekend, is very high. That's why my confidence is so high of Enjoying running a big race," Moore said Thursday. "I couldn't be happier. We've got a horse going in that's very fit, he's going into the race in perfect shape, and we believe he should be in the first three."

Moore's optimism notwithstanding, the Dundeel gelding hasn't shown much in four starts this season. His best result was a late-running third in a Class 2 handicap in January.

Those stretching out to the March 7 Derby will be asked to go 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles). Although Hong Kong's international group 1 racing program has blossomed through the past decade and more, the Derby retains a unique cachet among local owners and trainers and is every bit as desirable a target as the internationals.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club, in cooperation with the government, continues to restrict access to its racetracks as part of the effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Apart from trainers, jockeys, Club officials, and stewards with race-day duties, only owners with starters who have made a prior reservation in an owner box will be admitted. All HKJC off-track wagering offices are closed, as are Telebet hotlines. Automated and online wagering remains available. BH
