PRAYER OF INVOCATION ... The Rev. Dr. Jean Hunnisett

SCRIPTURE READINGLuke 2:1-14 ... The Rev. Chris MillerIn those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time

came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

CONGREGATIONAL CAROLNo. 64 “O Little Town of Bethlehem” Forest Green

SCRIPTURE READINGPsalm 96O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The Lord is king! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.” Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord; for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

CAROLS FOR 9:30 PM“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” God rest ye merry, gentlemen let nothing you dismay Remember, Christ, our Saviour was born on Christmas day To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. O tidings of comfort and joyIn Bethlehem, in Israel, this blessed Babe was born And laid within a manger upon this bless-ed morn The which His Mother Mary did nothing take in scorn O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. O tidings of comfort and joyFrom God our Heavenly Father a blessed Angel came; And unto certain Shepherds brought tidings of the same: How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by Name. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. O tidings of comfort and joy“Fear not then,” said the Angel, “Let nothing you affright, This day is born a Saviour of a pure Virgin bright, To free all those who trust in Him from Satan’s power and might.” O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. O tidings of comfort and joyAnd when they came to Bethlehem where our dear Saviour lay, They found Him in a manger, where oxen feed on hay; His Mother Mary kneeling down, unto the Lord did pray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. O tidings of comfort and joyNow to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas all other doth deface. “O Holy Night”O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night Divine.Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from the Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weaknesses no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! Behold your King, Before Him lowly bend!Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name.Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever, His power and glory evermore proclaim. His power and glory evermore proclaim.

We Three KingsWe three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign. RefrainFrankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worshiping God on high.

RefrainMyrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb. RefrainGlorious now behold Him arise; King and God and sacrifice; Alleluia!, Alleluia!, Rings through the earth and skies. Refrain

No. 44 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” CarolIt came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold, “Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heaven’s all-gracious King!” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled; and still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the angel strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and warring humankind hears not the love song which they bring. O hush the noise and cease your strife, and hear the angels sing. For, lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.
