“The King Mocked”1. How about David standing before Goliath?2. Do you remember what Goliath said to

David when he came to fight him?A. “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks

[to play]?” (1 Samuel 17:43)B. Was that not mockery?

3. But that day too, God would not be mocked!

4. David used one smooth stone and his sling.5. And the joke was on Goliath!

“The King Mocked”1. Take a look at this scene. What do you see?2. It is Jesus being made the laughingstock of

the soldiers.3. The Roman soldiers make sport of Jesus as

they strip Him of His clothes, replacing them with royal robes, a crown of thorns and a scepter in His hands.

4. What a belly laugh they must have had as they kneel before Jesus, making fun of Him, spit on Him and call Him their King.

“The King Mocked”1. But where was God on the day that Jesus

was mocked?2. So where is the scene where God’s anointed

had had enough and uses His divine strength to teach His enemies a lesson?

3. This scene does not end like the others.4. Matthew says, “they put His own clothes on

Him and led Him away to be crucified” (Matthew 27:31).

“The King Mocked”5. Jesus does not put up a fight.6. He doesn’t flash His divine power and get

revenge.7. Jesus humbly submits to the insults and

mockery.8. This is Good News for all of us who have

shook our fists at God.9. Jesus carried all the disrespect and the

mockery to save all who have mocked God.

“The King Mocked”10. But you ask, “When have I mocked God?”

A. Every time I have scoffed at the demands of His Law;

B. Every time I have not trusted God;C. Every time I have prayed to God as if He was

my bellboy rather than the King of kings.D. Every time I have looked down on God and

questioned His decisions with contempt;E. Every time I have taken my sin far too lightly,

considering it merely an occasional mistake;

“The King Mocked”11. This is why Jesus was mocked and made

fun of, because I have done the same to God.

12. Jesus bore it all, willingly and silently.13. Amazing isn’t it? 14. Jesus is mocked in order to bring you and

me forgiveness for our mockery.15. Jesus carried on His own body all the

mockery, disrespect and all the sin that you and I can dish out.

“The King Mocked”16. Jesus takes it to the cross and grave to

destroy it, once and for all.17. He, then, rises from the dead, not to get

payback or revenge, but to proclaim that peace and reconciliation had been fully made.

“The King Mocked”1. You remember when the Wise Men came to

worship the Baby Jesus?2. They called Him the “King

of the Jews.”3. Fast forward 30 years and

now Gentile soldiers give this title to Jesus, mockingly, “Hail, King of the Jews.”

“The King Mocked”4. This Jesus, the greater Samson, stretched

out His right and left hands on the cross and through His death brought down Satan and his power over you and me.

“The King Mocked”5. This Jesus, the greater David, used the five

jagged wounds to crush Satan’s head and giving you a share in His victory.

6. This Jesus was mercilessly mocked, so that you and I might mercifully be declared forgiven and a member of God’s eternal Kingdom.

7. Now you know, why Jesus was mocked.
