Carnival

If you were advised you were successful in the Silent Auction or the Raffle but haven’t yet paid (if outstanding) and/or collected your item, please come to the Office.

We still have a few things left behind from Carnival: white plastic clothes racks, trestle tables, gazebos, and marquees. If these belong to you, please collect from the Stadium as soon as possible.

The Carnival Day

Dear Essex Heights Community,

What a great day we had last Saturday. Even though there were tense moments on Friday and early in the morning, the Carnival was an overwhelming success. Thank to everyone who came and made it a memorable day. The stalls were so well organised and the wide variety of activities made the day enjoyable for everyone. It was wonderful to see past families and students still coming back to Essex Heights to be part of our community.

These great events do not just happen but require a large team to put it all together. A big thank you to all the stall organisers. What a vast array of products, food and games were available! Congratulations on a job well done. Such a day is not possible without the tireless work of the PFA Carnival Committee. A massive thanks must go to Andrea Fyfe and the committee for hours of work prior to and on the day.

Also, thank you to all the current staff and a few past familiar faces who gave up their time to come and be part of the day. A highlight of the day were the many choirs and bands that performed on the day. To our performers, present and past

students, you all were just great. Thank you again to Tanya for organising the musical items. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I think ’The Blazing Saddles’ were again an outstanding success. I have been told that many visitors to the school could not believe that they were staff members. Many thought they were a professional band that we had hired. Such a great sound!!! Well done!! The world tour awaits.

Finally a huge thanks to our tireless Carnival coordinator extraordinaire, Betty Ciorcari, for bringing such a successful day together. It was a great EHPS community event and really showed real the meaning of school spirit.

Final reconciliation for all the stalls will be completed on Monday after the last expenses are tallied. We are expecting a great result.

I would like to emphasise again that the real value of the Carnival is NOT the amount raised, it is in the amazing Community spirit that was obvious on the day and has been talked about all week. Congratulations to everyone.

This week in ArtSEL we have been learning about Bystander Power.

A bystander is someone who sees or knows that bullying is happening to someone else. Bystanders can make the bullying situation worse and become part of the problem. For example, they may:

not say anything to make it stop laugh along with the bully not stick up for the person and not report it.

Often the bystander knows bullying is wrong and may feel guilty and ashamed of doing nothing or they might say ‘it’s not my problem’. If you are a bystander, it is wrong to do nothing. Bullying is everyone’s problem. It’s all of our responsibility to not let bullying happen and try to stop it when it does. If you witness bullying, remember the 3RS: ‘Recognise’ it. ‘Report’ it to a teacher. ‘Refuse’ it and assertively tell them to stop.

ArtSEL homelinks reminder Please remind your children to complete their ArtSEL homelinks weekly (Years 5 and 6) and return their folders for the ArtSEL lesson. Please note Year 3's receive ArtSEL homelinks fortnightly.

If you have any questions, please come and see me.

Prep to Year 2 House Athletics

The Essex Heights Prep to Year 2 House Athletics will be a fun morning of friendly house athletics activities for all Prep to Year 2 students on the Council Oval from 9am to 11am on Wednesday 5th December. Students, parents and friends are asked to come dressed in their house colours for the day (Boyd (blue), Drysdale (red), Lindsay (yellow) and Nolan (green), and will participate in a rotation of activities followed by sprints.

House Captains will assist with the organisation of the day, but parent assistance is also vital to ensure the smooth running and exciting atmosphere of the day. All helpers must a have a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and have signed the EHPS Child Safe Code of Conduct. Please see Elisha Cotterell for further information and sign up if you are available to help - use the link provided in the message sent via Compass earlier this week, click here, or type https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0B4CAFAB2DA7FC1-prep into your web browser.

Thank you in advance and see you there.

Gardens Watering Roster

In order to retain our lovely grounds over the hot summer holiday period, we ask for the support of our local community to assist with watering. If you are able to help (even for a day!) please let the school know by completing the form attached to the message sent via Compass or collect a form from the Office, and returning it before the end of the school term.

We will hold an information session on Wednesday 19th December to run through which areas require attention, accessing the hoses, and where the taps are located. Meet in the Office at 3.35pm.

Thank you for your willingness to help out.

Fundraisers

Thank you to everyone who participated in our fundraising this week in support of Year 6 Graduation - the Pizza Lunch on Thursday and the Crazy Hair Day on Friday.

Kidscapes

Year 6 students took home their Kidscapes for decoration in preparation for their Graduation a few weeks ago. Kidscapes are due to be returned to school on Monday (3rd December).

Bears & Owls

The time has come! A fantastic memory for your children to have for so many years to come. We have ordered Graduation Bears/Owls for the students. The students have already chosen which they would like and both are the same cost. Please pay for your child’s bear or owl on Compass.

Graduating Class of 2018 Photo

A photo of the graduating class of 2018 is available to purchase - a copy has been posted on the noticeboard in the Banksia building. A copy of the photo is $20, payable by cash only (correct amount please). Photos are available from the Office for the next week. You can send the payment in an envelope marked for the attention of Gael Munro, and the student’s name and class and “Year 6 Photo” written on the outside.

Year 6 Graduation

At Essex Heights we value feedback in a number of forms. These can include: student to teacher feedback, student to student feedback, teacher to teacher feedback, and teacher to student feedback.

In classrooms we use a number of different strategies for collecting feedback. These are collected at various times throughout the week, particularly at the end of a teaching session. Here are some examples of student to teacher feedback that we have been using this year.

Student to teacher feedback enables us to improve our knowledge of the students and how they learn. It provides an opportunity for student voice as well as an opportunity for us to better understand their emotional needs.

Indonesian Visitors

Last Wednesday, some special Indonesian visitors came to Essex Heights. They are currently doing an exchange program with AIYEP (Aust Indo Youth Exchange Program for 21-25 year olds) from Indonesia for two months, and have been at a homestay with my parents. As part of their exchange program, they've been volunteering in various schools across Australia, and in turn will invite the Australian participants into their communities when they return to Indonesia. Amel from Sumatra, Indry from Sulawesi, and Kiki from Java discussed their culture, held conversations in Indonesian, and taught the Year 2 students a Sumatran percussive dance (which was also featured in the Asian Games opening ceremony).

We look forward to more visits and opportunities to engage with our Indonesian neighbours.

This year the school has commenced a three year partnership with Deakin University to look at the teaching of Science and Mathematics together. In Term Three the children investigated ‘Living Things’ in the school grounds, studying the occurrence of different living things, recording and analysing data their own data. You may have seen students working as scientists investigating the school grounds, with magnifying glasses and clip boards in hand.

The Year 1 students analysed their findings and constructed their own representations to make comparisons, tabulating, constructing tables and graphs, while making inferences about what different living things need. The Year 4 students extended their investigation and data inquiry to variation of living things and compared three different types of habitat within the school grounds and the implications on living things found in those areas. Students reportedly enjoyed the activities, and teachers commented on the high level of student engagement, individual representations of data and understanding demonstrated. Currently the Year 1 and Year 4 students are participating in an Astronomy Learning Sequence. We look forward to sharing further information regarding student participation and learning, over the coming years of our partnership.

Following are some comments from students:

“We get the opportunity to challenge ourselves and think deeper”

“Maths and Science together makes sense… “

“I really enjoy doing all the activities”

“Science with Maths together is easier…”

“I find maths easier this way… I can understand it better”
