New applications introduced in XI 4.0

5.1 Upgrade management tool

Upgrade manager is a new tool that upgrades BI repository content from supported previous versionsto the current version of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise. The Incremental Upgrade workflow fromwithin this tool replaces the upgrade functionalities offered previously by the Import Wizard. The CompleteUpgrade workflow from within this tool replaces the upgrade functionalities offered previously by theCentral Configuration Manager (CCM).

For promotion workflows involving moving BI repository content between deployments at the sameversion, please use the Lifecycle Management Tool.

5.2 Monitoring

Monitoring is a new application in SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0. This application providesthe ability to capture the runtime and historical metrics of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0 serversand applications, for reporting and notification. The monitoring application is an important tool for thesystem administrators. It helps them identify if an application is functioning normally and if the responsetimes are as expected. This gives a better insight into SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0performance and provides key business metrics, which can be used to configure and monitor differentmetrics as needed.

The benefits of monitoring include the ability to:• Check the performance of each server: This is possible with the help of watches, which shows the

state of each server as traffic lights. The system administrator can set thresholds for these watchesand receive alerts when these thresholds are breached. This helps in taking proactive action if thereis an impending failure or outage.

• View critical system KPIs: This helps in activity and resource monitoring. These KPIs are displayedin the dashboard page of the monitoring application.

• Check system availability and response time: This is possible with the help of probes. Probes simulateworkflows to check if the servers and services in the Enterprise deployment are functioning asexpected. By analyzing the roundtrip time of these probes at periodic intervals, the systemadministrator can assess the system usage pattern.

• Analyze peak load and peak period for the CMS: This helps the system administrator to determineif more licenses or system resources are required.

SearchSearch functionality and performance have improved in this release. When you type the text that youwant to locate in the Search field in the toolbar, “quick search” functionality shows the top six resultssorted by relevance as you type. Search goes through the metadata and content of documents thatare found in the repository and in Explorer. You can also use advanced syntax such as boolean, phrase, and attribute values in your search.

When you run your search, your results are listed in the Search drawer and sorted by facet. Thesefacets group your results together by InfoObject metadata, document metadata, and document content.

AlertingAlerting is a feature that spans different applications and is used to notify users and administratorswhen events are triggered. In SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise, users and administrators can subscribeto alerts for system, file, or custom events. Reports created in Crystal Reports for Enterprise whichcontain alerts also support Alerting. When the events or report alerts are triggered, notifications aresent to the subscribers' email addresses or a BI system destination (for example, a BI launch padaccount).

6.3.4 Dashboard Design

SAP BusinessObjects Dashboard Design (formerly called Xcelsius) contains new features andenhancements that are focused on improving productivity and direct enterprise data connectivity. Thesefeatures and enhancements include new and updated support for SAP BusinessObjects Universequeries and integration with SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise.

Dashboard Design caching and processing serversA new data processing layer is available for enterprise data connectivity and is designed to addressthe scalability and performance requirements of large scale dashboarding deployments. It includes twonew servers: a Dashboard Design Cache Server and a Dashboard Processing Server. The DashboardDesign Cache Server provides data caching and sharing on consistent data models (Relational Universequeries) off the Semantic Layer, and the Dashboard Processing Server manages query processingrequests. Both servers are integrated into standard BI Platform services including auditing andmonitoring.

Query PanelA new Query panel is available for creating Universe-based queries in Dashboard Design. To define aquery, you can now drag relational universe objects, dimensions, and measures from the Query panelto the canvas. You can also define the order that result objects are returned by the query, the data sortorder, query filters, and single- or multi-selection prompts. The Query panel also provides a data previewof the query.

Query Browser panelThe new Query Browser panel displays a summary view of result objects, filters, and prompts includedin the model and provides quick access to Query Panel for creating and editing queries. You can alsorefresh queries from the Query Browser to update query data that is bound to components. When youdrag a query from the Query Browser panel to the canvas, a Prompt Selector component is automaticallyadded to the model.

Direct data bindingIn Dashboard Design, you can now bind data from query result objects directly to charts and selectors. When data is bound directly to charts and selectors, the component displays a preview of the querydata on the canvas in design time.

Universe Connectivity componentsThe Components Browser contains a new Universe Connectivity category dedicated to query dataconnections. The Universe Connectivity category contains two new components: Query Prompt Selectorand Query Refresh Button.

2010-05-2029

New and modified features in existing SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise products

Page 30: SAP Business Objects What's New Guide

The Query Prompt Selector component automatically handles prompt value selection behavior basedon the metadata for the query prompt. The Query Prompt Selector component is available in threestyles:• Single value• Single or multiple selection with List of Values• Single or multiple selection with cascading List of Values

If the prompt includes a list of values, the Query Prompt Selector component allows users to searchfor or browse through the list at runtime and also select whether the values are shown or hidden in themodel.

The Query Refresh Button component allows users to request a refresh of the query data from withinthe model at runtime.

Regional Data Format by User Preferred Viewing LocaleData formatting controls how data, such as dates, times, currency, and numeric values, is presentedto users. In previous versions of the product, the data format was determined by the locale set whenthe model was created. Dashboard Design now allows models to format their data using dynamicregional data formats, which means that the format can be changed automatically to match the enduser's preferred viewing locale.

Themodel designer does not need to do anything to configure regional data formatting. When DashboardDesign models are saved on the platform, the model automatically adjusts its data format settings tomatch the preferred viewing locale set in BI launch pad.

Text translationIn Dashboard Design, most text contained in models published to the platform can be translated toother languages through the Translation Manager.

When a model is saved to the platform, the translation workflow is enabled and translation expertstranslate the text used in themodel. The text translations are then published to the platform and combinedwith the model to create localized versions of the model.

At runtime, user's see the localized version that matches their preferred viewing locale.

The following text in Dashboard Design models can be translated:• Most text input including titles, subtitles, series names, category names, and so on• Data in Excel ranges that are marked as translatable by the model designer.

Dashboard Design objectsDashboard Design introduces a new object type in SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise. Where previousversions of the software required two objects, an Xcelsius object for working with the model in thedesigner and a Flash object for running the model, the Dashboard Design object holds both the designdocument (XLF) and the Flash file (SWF) in a single object.

If the object is opened in Dashboard Design and modified or changed through the Translation Manager, the SWF cached in the Dashboard Design object is automatically updated to reflect the changes. Modeldesigners do not need to re-export the Flash object separately for users to receive the latest changes.

2010-05-2030

New and modified features in existing SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise products

Page 31: SAP Business Objects What's New Guide

Dashboard Design objects support object-level security. For example, system administrators can setthe user rights to block certain users or user groups from modifying or even viewing the dashboard.

For models that have Universe query connections, system administrators can specify preferred servergroups for query caching and processing. Object-level caching options override server-level settings,so system administrators can allocate resources and adjust processing settings to accommodateindividual model requirements.

Lifecycle Management of Dashboard Design objectsTo integrate with LifeCycle Management support in SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0, the newDashboard Design object maintains relationship and dependency information, including the model's:• relationship with Universe queries• dependency on QaaWS and Universe objects in QaaWS connections• dependencies on corresponding Crystal reports, Interactive Analysis documents, and Universe

objects in Live Office connections.

With integration to Lifecycle Management tools, system administrators can check dependency informationfor Dashboard Design objects and make sure all dependent objects are promoted together.

Dashboard Design models access SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise data through a Web Servicesconnection. If the model is migrated to a different location, such as from a testing system to a productionenvironment, theWeb Services URLmight change. To support this scenario, Dashboard Design modelsaccept dynamic Web Services URLs at runtime. BI launch pad and CMC retrieve the Web ServicesURL from the Web Services application object for the Web Services connection.

6.3.5 Live Office

Live Office Panel for Microsoft OutlookIn Microsoft Outlook, a new Live Office Panel allows users to access BI content directly from emailmessages. The panel facilitates contextual search for BI content and builds a network relationshipbetween that content, people, and email threads so background and other relevant information is readilyavailable for future email discussions.

Fromwithin the panel, users can search for relevant content, insert documents or links in email messages, associate files with email threads, and add documents to a favorites list. Based on this information, therelationship network, and the context of newmessages, the Live Office Panel also suggests documentsthat might be relevant to the email message.

The Live Office Panel supports the following document types for search, associate, add to favorites, suggest, and insert as Live Office object:• SAP Crystal Reports 2011• SAP BusinessObjects Interactive Analysis (Planned for Beta Refresh)• Universe queries (Planned for Beta Refresh)

2010-05-2031

New and modified features in existing SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise products

Page 32: SAP Business Objects What's New Guide

In addition, the following documents types are supported for search, associate, add to favorites, andsuggest. They cannot be inserted as Live Office objects:• Dashboard Design• Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)• Adobe Acrobat (PDF)

Enhanced performance in Microsoft ExcelWhen inserting Live Office objects into Microsoft Excel documents, the performance is improved.

Auditing events included SAP BusinessObjects EnterpriseRefresh and prompt selection events from Live Office are now recorded in SAP BusinessObjectsEnterprise auditing. (Event type IDs 10,700-10,799). Live Office create, delete, modify, logon, and logoffevents are recorded as CMS events with the same name. For more information about auditing in SAPBusinessObjects Enterprise, see the “Monitoring” section in the SAP BusinessObjects EnterpriseAdministrator's Guide.

Explore Excel Data (Planned for Beta Refresh)In Microsoft Excel, users can easily upload data to SAP BusinessObjects Explorer Premium edtion anduse its intuitive visualization and search functionality to examine the data in selected areas or completeExcel worksheets. They can then download the results (data and visualizations) to use in otherapplications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

6.3.6 The information design tool

About the information design toolThe information design tool is a SAP BusinessObjects metadata design environment that enables adesigner to extract, define, and manipulate metadata from relational and OLAP sources to create anddeploy SAP BusinessObjects universes.

A universe is an organized collection of metadata objects that enable business users to analyze andreport on corporate data in non technical language. These objects include dimensions, measures, hierarchies, attributes, pre-defined calculations, functions, and queries. The metadata object layer isbuilt on a relational database table schema or an OLAP cube, so the objects map directly to the databasestructures. A universe includes connections to the data sources so queries can be run on the data.

The role of the universe is to provide semantically relevant and understandable business objects for abusiness user, who is free to analyze data and create reports using the business language appropriatefor their analytical needs.

Universes are used by SAP BusinessObjects data analysis and reporting applications.

To enable the designer to create universes, the information design tool provides the resources necessaryto:• Create connections

2010-05-2032

New and modified features in existing SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise products

Page 33: SAP Business Objects What's New Guide

• Extract a complete OLAP cube schema, or extract tables and joins to build a relational schemacalled a data foundation. You can also create views and derived tables on a data foundation.

• Createmetadata objects from the cube or data foundation. These objects are contained and organizedin a business layer. The SQL and MDX syntax can be validated and queries run against the targetdatabase to test the business layer.

• Compile the business layer, the data foundation, and the connections into single universe file (.UNX)• Publish the universe to the CMS to be implemented in deployments of BusinessObjects reporting

and data analysis applications.

Query PanelThe Query Panel is a tool you use to build and test the queries that the end users can use to createreports. the Query Panel is used by the information design tool, Interactive Analysis, and Crystal Reports. You insert result objects into the "Result Objects" pane that you want to show in the query report. Youcan add filter objects to filter the results returned by criteria such as a date range, results greater thana given value, selected regions and so on. You can also view the SQL that makes up the query. TheQuery Panel is used in the following tools:• information design tool• Interactive Analysis• Crystal Reports

Member SelectorThe "Member Selector" is a tool you use to select members of OLAP universe hierarchies to:• Create named sets of members when creating a universe• Create queries based on hierarchies or members of hierarchies• Define members that will be excluded from queries

The "Member Selector" consists of the following panes:

DescriptionPane

This is the top pane of the "Member Selector", there are three tabs:• "Members" tab: Select or exclude members according to specific relationships

in the hierarchy.• "Metadata" tab: Select or exclude bymetadata criteria. This tab displays objects

by hierarchy levels, named sets, and calculated members.• "Prompt" tab: Create prompts so that the user selects members or metadata

at run-time.

"Member picker"

This shows the selected members, prompts, and excluded members of the querythat you are building. The information you see in the "Summary pane" appearsin the "Result objects" pane of the "Query Panel".

"Summary pane"

The Member Selector is used in the following tools:• information design tool• Interactive Analysis• Crystal Reports

information design tool, and in the Query Panel used by the information design tool, Interactive Analysis, and Crystal Reports.

Multi-Source UniversesYou can now create a data foundation on multiple data sources. When you compile a universe basedon a multi-source data foundation, your business intelligence application can use the universe to sendqueries to multiple sources at once.

Multi-source universes provide a simplified layer of abstraction over your data sources. They let youuse standard SQL 92 syntax to define your derived tables and business objects. The query engine thatthe multi-source universes use translates the queries into the language of the sources, and distributesqueries efficiently among the sources.

To provide this functionality, the query engine technology from SAP BusinessObjects Data FederatorXI 3.0 has been enhanced and integrated into SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise. The data federationquery engine works transparently under the hood: you drag and drop objects in the multi-source datafoundation, and when your business intelligence applications run queries through the universe, the datafederation query engine distributes queries and returns results in the most efficient way possible.

The data federation query engine provides features including the following:• SAS connections: You can use multi-source universes to create connections to your SAS data. The

data from these connections can also be federated with data from other sources, as with any sourcethat you use in a multi-source universe.

• Relational-based connections to SAP NetWeaver BusinessWarehouse 7.01: Multi-source universesprovide an alternative way to create connections to SAP NetWeaver BW 7.01.

These connections let you generate data foundations as star schemas based on the OLAP data. You can then define and manipulate the objects in the data foundation as you would any relationalconnection.

• “Semi-join”: improvements in performance and detection for narrow queries on data coming fromlarge tables that can be filtered using data from small tables. The semi-join technology can selectthe optimal strategy for retrieving data from your sources during execution, depending on the volumeof data.

• Native queries and native expressions: Your multi-source queries can include native syntax for thedata sources to take advantage of specific features of the data sources. Native queries allow entirequeries written in the source syntax. Native expressions are parts of queries written in native syntax, and can be parametrized and combined with other expressions in a larger multi-source query.
