JOHANNESBURG also known as Jozi, Jo'burg or eGoli, is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. The city is one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world, and is also the world's largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline.

While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa's three capital cities, it does house the Constitutional Court – South Africa's highest court. The city is the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg includes Soweto, which was a separate city from the late 1970s until the 1990s. Originally an acronym for "South Western Townships", Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg populated mostly by native African workers in the gold mining industry. Eventually incorporated into Johannesburg, the apartheid regime (in power 1948 – 1994) separated Soweto from the rest of Johannesburg to make it a completely Black area.

SABC TOUR: Like South Africa itself, the country’s public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has a rich and fascinating history.

The SABC was established by the South African government in 1936 with radio services offered first in English and Afrikaans, and later in the African languages of isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho and Setswana. In 1950 the SABC launched its first commercial radio service, Springbok Radio.

Experimental television broadcasts in the main cities of South Africa kicked off in 1975, with national broadcasts starting nationally on January 6 1976. There are still many South Africans who experienced life pre-TV and who fondly recall a host of radio shows that were staple daily entertainment.

The history of the broadcaster is intertwined with South African politics. Radio broadcasting was established through an Act of Parliament, and SABC radio stations were generally considered government mouthpieces for many years. The ruling National Party used radio and television to further the apartheid regime and benefit the white minority.

At one time some SABC managers belonged to the Broederbond, an elite secret society dedicated to the advancement of Afrikaner interests. Christian religion was promoted with church programmes on Sundays and censorship was strictly enforced. Regional FM music stations of the 1960s were banned from playing music by bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

In 1996, the new political dispensation in South Africa meant that the SABC had to restructure in order to align itself with the notions of equality, redress and inclusion. Many of the programmes reminiscent of previous broadcasting were abandoned. SABC Tours introduce visitors to the world of broadcasting, thus giving the public from all walks of life a rare chance to witness the day-to-day activities that keep their radio stations and TV channels on air and showcase the vast network of operations that make all of this possible. Guests are given a bird’s eye-view of the corporation’s activities by being allowed into most of SABC’s areas of operation, which include Radiopark and the TV Centre.

DAY 4 – Soweto Tour, SKY and Hector Peterson – 15th January 2017 After breakfast we will begin the visit to the Soweto Tour. SOWETO TOUR: Enjoy a fascinating tour of the Soweto Township. Soweto obtained its name from the first two letters of South Western Township which was the original description of the area. The establishment of Soweto is, like Johannesburg, linked directly to the discovery of Gold in 1885. Thousands of people from around the world and South Africa flocked to the new town to seek their fortunes or to offer their labor. Within 4 years Johannesburg was the second largest city. More than half the population was black, most living in multi-racial shanty towns near the gold mines in the centre of the town. As the gold mining industry developed, so did the need for labor increase. Migrant labor was started and most of these workers lived in mine compounds. However other workers had to find their own accommodation often in appalling conditions.

MANDELA HOUSE & HECTOR PETERSON on the Soweto Tour You will also visit the home of former President Nelson Mandela in Orlando West, a four-room house in Soweto where he lived during the late 1950's and early 1960's and again immediately after his release from prison in 1990.

The Hector Pieterson Museum opens on Youth Day, 16 June, but don't expect to come away with an image of what Hector looked like - the family do not have a single snapshot of their famous son. Hector, 12, was one of the first casualties of the Soweto uprising of 16 June, 1976, when over 500 people were killed as they protested over the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in township schools. A news photograph of the dying Hector being carried by a fellow student was published around the world. Shortly afterwards journalists approached the Pieterson family for pictures of Hector. Photographs were handed over with a promise they would be returned - but they weren't. Decades later, the search for the photographs continues, with the chief curator of the Museum, Ali Hlongwane, once quoted as saying: "We have the phone number of one of the photographers, now retired; who we hope will give us a photo.” So you won't see snapshots of Hector but what you will see is one of Sam Nzima's six photographs showing the unconscious Hector being carried by fellow student Mbuyisa Makhubo, with Hector's sister, Antoinette Sithole, running alongside. When you visit the museum you might see Antoinette herself, as she is working at the museum and occasionally giving guided tours.

Late Lunch at Sakhumzi Restaurant – Soweto The first residents of what is now known as Soweto were located into the area called Klipspruit in 1905 following their relocation from “Coolietown” in the centre of Johannesburg as a result of an outbreak of bubonic plague. The Johannesburg City Council took the opportunity to establish racially segregated residential areas. Some residents were to be relocated to Alexandra Township (near the present day Sandton).

Page 6: Santa Monica College Study Abroad Program 2017 ... · PDF fileSanta Monica College Study Abroad Program 2017 . Johannesburg/Kruger National Park ... Lake Hotel DAY 4 – Soweto ...

This group comprised Black, Indian and Colored families and they received freehold title to their land (this was subsequently reversed by the Apartheid Government). Only black families were located into Klipspruit and the housing was on a rental basis. Klipspruit was subsequently renamed Pimville. During the 1930s the demand for housing for the large numbers of black people who had moved into Johannesburg grew to such an extent that new housing was built in an area known as Orlando, named after the first administrator Edwin Orlando Leaky. In the 1940s a controversial character James Mpanza led the first land invasion and some 20000 squatters occupied land near Orlando. James Mpanza is known as the “Father of Soweto”. In 1959 the residents of Sophiatown were forcibly removed to Soweto and occupied the area known as Meadowlands. Sir Earnest Oppenheimer, the first chairman of the Anglo American Corporation, was appalled by the housing shortage and was instrumental in arranging a loan for the construction of additional housing and this is commemorated by the Oppenheimer Tower in Jabulani. Soweto falls within the municipality of the Johannesburg Metro Council in the province of Gauteng which appropriately means place of Gold. The original rental houses have now been sold to the tenants who received a subsidy from the government to cover the cost of the houses. Private sector housing was developed from the 1980s funded by the various banks. Freehold title is available to the properties. Services are provided by the Johannesburg Metro council and electricity by Eskom. Accommodation at Centurion Lake Hotel DAY 5 – Apartheid Museum, JHB City Tour and Welcome Dinner – 16th January 2017 APARTHEID MUSEUM: At times you feel overwhelmed by the screens and the sound and the powerful images they are projecting. The Museum leads you through room after room in a zigzag of shapes, some with tall roofs, some dark and gloomy, some looking through to other images behind bars or cages that make it clear that apartheid was not only immoral, but evil. After a few hours at the Apartheid Museum you will feel that you were in the townships in the 70s and 80s, dodging police bullets or teargas canisters, or marching and toy-toying with thousands of school children, or carrying the body of a comrade into a nearby house. And just when you feel you can't tolerate the bombardment of your senses any longer, you reach a quiet space, with a glass case which contains a book of the new Constitution of South Africa, and pebbles on the floor. You can express your Solidarity with the victims of apartheid by placing your own pebble on a pile, and take a book. You'll then walk out into grassland with paths which take you to a small lake - you'll need this reflective time.

City Tour Newtown is situated in Johannesburg’s inner city and forms part of the city’s cultural and creative hub. The district houses theatres, art galleries, museums, restaurants, book stores, craft markets, clubs and cafés. In the early 20th century, the area was originally used primarily for brick making since the land was rich in clay. Due to its easy access to Johannesburg’s railway lines, Newtown became a commercial and trading hub as banks, brick companies, breweries and fisheries establishing in the area. The district has a politically turbulent past and, due to its multiracial diversity, it was the scene of some of the first forced removals in Gauteng implemented by the apartheid government. Today, Newtown remains resolutely colour-blind with artists of all races gathering here.

Union Workers Museum

The excellent portrayal of life as a migrant worker, found at the Worker’s Museum in Newtown, Johannesburg, was master-minded by Henry Paine, a local architect. Henry and his team managed to give a balanced presentation without sensationalising any aspect of this tragic practice.

The museum is housed in an old migrant labour hostel compound and documents the history of South Africa’s migrant workforce, from the first arrivals to unionisation. The original dormitories, concrete bunks, and punishment room at the old compound building reveal the workers’ hardships under the migrant labour system. The men who lived in this compound were some of the many thousands of migrant workers who were recruited from throughout Southern Africa to work on the mines and in towns and factories. They left their wives and children hundreds of miles away in the rural areas and each night they returned to their dormitories where they slept side-by-side in double-storey concrete bunks with nine workers per level. There was no privacy and they were at the mercy of the Compound Manager who exercised total control over their lives.

Braamfontein

Did you know the Braamfontein Improvement District is 10 years old? Legislated in 2004 to protect the investments made by the property owners and the JDA, Braamfontein has changed substantially over the past 10 years. Starting out as a space for corporate head offices, Braamfontein now boasts some of the best public art in the city. It also offers visitors a wide variety of really great coffee shops, new restaurants are coming into the area all the time, boutique clothing stores are popping up around every corner, art galleries abound, night clubs and bars are jammed packed over the weekend, students are flocking to the education and entrepreneur hubs as well as international NGO's! It is all happening in Braamfontein! The job of the Braamfontein Improvement District is to watch over and maintain the public space. When an area looks clean and is well maintained by cleaners constantly moving around the area it feels more inviting, it gives you a sense of comfort. Seeing our Public Safety Ambassadors (PSA's) posted throughout the district creates a sense of safety becuase you know someone is constantly monitoring the space. But our PSA's are not static security guards. If you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to ask, out Ambassadors are there to help you with all issues Braamfontein related.

The Kruger National Park (KNP) is in north-east of South Africa and runs along the border of Mozambique in the east, Zimbabwe in the north, and the southern border is the Crocodile River. The park covers 20,000 square kilometers and is divided in 14 different Eco zones, each supporting different wildlife. It is one of the main attractions of South Africa and it is considered the flagship of South African National Parks (SANPark). The Park was established in 1898 by the South African President Paul Kruger as a protected area for wildlife and it opened its gate the general public in 1927 for the first time. We will be staying at Tremisana Game Lodge at Kruger National Park. Tremisana Game Lodge was a founder member of the Balule Game Reserve. Tremisana is the largest and leading lodge in this section, having a total of 15 chalets plus a two-bedroomed guesthouse. We can accommodate a maximum of 40 guests. Every unit is en suite (shower, toilet, and basin) and all units are air-conditioned. Every bed has its own Mosquito net. 24 hour WIFI is available to all Tremisana guests.

The lodge is serviced by two excellent boreholes. Its proximity to the tar road means Tremisana is easily accessible all year round, including the rainy season. The presence of lions, elephant and buffalo necessitates the maintaining of an electric fence around the camp.

Perhaps the most striking feature of Tremisana Game Lodge is the beautiful gardens. The presence of numerous bougainvilleas and various palms and cycads gives the camp a subtropical feel. Water features add a soothing effect and the overall feel of Tremisana is very relaxing. At night, the subdued light from the illuminated paved walkways lend a romantic and magical flavour to this outstanding camp.

DAY 11 – Orientation at the Cape Town Waterfront & Free half Day in Cape Town – 22nd January 2017 Take a day to settle in and rejuvenate before you start your Cape Town experience CAPE TOWN (Afrikaans: Kaapstad; Xhosa: iKapa) is the second-most populous city in South Africa, and the largest in land area, forming part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. It is the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. The city is famous for its harbor as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Cape Town is also Africa's most popular tourist destination. Located on the shore of Table Bay, Cape Town was originally developed by the Dutch East India Company as a victual ling (supply) station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriates to South Africa. As of 2007 the city had an estimated population of 3.5 million. Accommodation at UCT DAY 12 – Cape Town City Tour – 23rd January 2017
