Spend enough me on Facebook, and you'll likely encounter a post wrien in a tongue that's foreign to you. That's because the social network has two billion users and supports over 45 languages. Facebook announced that all of its user translaon services—those lile magic tricks that happen when you click “see translaon” beneath a post or comment—are now powered by neural networks, which are a form of arficial intelligence.

Back in past, the company's arficial intelligence division, called Facebook AI Research, announced that they had developed a kind of neural network called a CNN (that stands for convoluonal neural network, not the news organizaon where Wolf Blitzer works) that was a fast, accurate translator. Part of the virtue of that CNN is that instead of looking at words one at a me, it can consider groups of them. Now, Facebook says that they have incorporated that CNN tech into their translaon system, as well as another type of neural network, called an RNN (the R is for recurrent). Those RNNs, Facebook said in a blog item about the news, are beer at understanding the context of the whole sentence than the previous system, and can reorder sentences as needed so that they make sense.

Facebook says that the new AI-powered translaon is 11 percent more accurate than the old-school approach, which is what they call a “phrase-based machine translaon” technique that wasn't powered by neural networks. That system translated words or small groups of words individually, and didn't do a good job of considering the context or word order of the sentence.

As an example of the difference between the two translaon systems, Facebook demonstrated how the old approach would have translated a sentence from Turkish into English, and then showed how the new AI-powered system would do it. The first Turkish-to-English sentence reads this way: “Their, Izmir's why you said no we don't expect them to understand.” Now check out the newer translaon: “We don't expect them to understand why Izmir said no.” Noce how the AI fixed the mistakes in word and phrase order?

While neural networks had been working together with the more tradional

translaon system before today, now all the translaon gets its smarts from

AI. This new system is capable of translang in 2,000 “direcons.” For example,

a translaon from English to French is one direcon, French to English is a

second, and French to Italian is a third direcon, and so forth. Astoundingly,

the neural networks handle 4.5 billion translaons per day, making them

quite the linguists

Keep changing your password

By far the easiest way to boot freeloaders off your wireless network is to change the Wi-Fi password. You

need to do this through your router's sengs-Change the password to something very hard to forget

(for you) and impossible to guess (for everyone else) and you've got a clean slate as far as access to your

wireless network goes. You do have the inconvenience of then reconnecng all of your devices and

computers, but it's a small price to pay for a clean Wi-Fi slate. Pick something that's important to you,

like a date or a name, but that no one else would think of, so it's both simple for you to enter and secured

against unwanted visitors

Check your router sengs

While we've got your router configuraon page open, a few other sengs are worth looking at. First,

change the default password used to access the router sengs page to something else—this stops anyone

who might gain access to your network from changing the Wi-Fi password themselves. As you'll have

realized when you accessed your router sengs for the first me, you need a password to get into the

menus, and a separate one to connect to Wi-Fi, so changing them both gives you maximum protecon.

It's also worth applying any pending firmware updates, which ensures your router is running the latest

and most secure version of its own basic operang system. Again, with so many router makes and models

on the market we can't give you instrucons for each one, but it should be simple to do—find the

instrucon booklet or a guide on the web for your device and it will only take a couple of minutes

Other security ps

If you want some extra help spong who's on your network who maybe shouldn't be, beyond what your

router offers, try Fing for Android or iOS, Acrylic Wi-Fi for Windows, or Who Is On My Wi-Fi for macOS.

All those apps are free (for non-commercial use), and are easy to navigate around no maer what your

level of networking know-how. Various other apps are available to do the same job too

1) Tips for Keeping Strangers off your Wi-Fi Network

You don't want neighbors or passers-by stealing your Wi-Fi any more than you want them stealing your water, electricity, or carefully curated collecon of Blu-ray movies. In fact it's more serious than that—if someone can hook on to the same network as you, it becomes easier for them to snoop on your browsing and your locally stored files. So how do you go about locking things down? Thankfully, keeping unwelcome visitors away from your Wi-Fi isn't difficult and doesn't need an IT qualificaon. Here's what you need to do. BY
