APPLYING GOOD OPEN SPACE FACTORS

Lost space is concept common to cities. 36th street NE is no exception. A variety of lots, buffers, highway interchanges, a high number of parking lots, and underutilized parks exist on the site without much purpose or adding much of anything to the public realm and experience to the corridor.

Context

Current Open Spaces What is Lost Space?

Few public spaces are present along the corridor. Connections required.

Residual, and underused spaces are opportunities to invest in the community.

Placemaking is an enriching movement that works to reimagine public spaces. Rather than creating open spaces that are generic and do not service the needs of the surrounding community, placemaking can enhance these public spaces. In conjunction with this concept, cultural planning works to create spaces that orient towards the values and needs of the community.

36 st NE is a mixed use transit corridor. The communities of Rundle and Marlborough reside to the east of 36 St. NE.

A high proportion of people in the community of Rundle and Marlborough speak a language other than English. The community is ethnically diverse.

The topic of public spaces has been researched extensively. The notion of a successful open space woud offer users a space to sit and gather and even eat. Good open spaces also provide mixed uses, shelter and nature.

INVENTORY AND INTERVENTIONSWINTER2015

HIGHWAY RESIDUE

OVERSIZED INFRASTRUCTURE

LOST SPACE INVENTORY

UNDERUTILIZED PARKS

INDUSTRIAL RAILWAY

An infill strategy is proposed through this project that transforms spaces of inactivity and lost potential, and creates social connection. The corridor is abundant in lost spaces that range in scale from buffer areas to oversized surface parking lots. In areas where very little interaction among the population occurs, this open space strategy creates interventions that encourages a diverse array of uses and users. The adaptable nature of these prototypes encourages a diverse culture and allows for a diversity of public spaces to be incorporated throughout the site.

THE OPTIONS: APPLICATION TO THE SITEWINTER2015

Minor Interventions Horizontal Connections Arts and Culture Network

OPTION 2 Linking the residential areas to industrial areas using strategies such as urban farming and sensory gardens for commercial and industrial workers.

OPTION 3 Placemaking and cultural planning for the community focuses on a wide range of interventions to create a a network of cultural spaces, that emphasize the diverse culutural community.

OPTION 1 Small scale interventions to deal with lost space. This strategy utilizes the human scale prototypes to create small initial investment

The proposed interventions can act at a multitude of scales, including temporary and permanent prototypes.

The malleability of these interventions offers the community flexibility and adaptability as the needs change over time. Therefore depending on the needs of the community, the application of these interventions changes as well.

These interventions create new social interactions and cultural identies that was once lacking along the 36 st NE corridor.
