They settled on a hill where the Saint Roque Shrine was located, dating back to 1506. The terrain within the municipality is quite rough and hilly, because it is rather close to the southernmost peaks of the Be- tico mountain range and the pre- sence of numerous streams. San Roque has been inhabited by many different civilisations since Palaeolithic Age, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. It was the Romans who founded Carteya, one of Roman Spain's most important cities and its ruins, situated between Cortijo del Rocadillo and Torre Cartagena have great archaeolo- gical value and guided tours are available at the site. Warm summers and mild winters and more than 3000 hours of suns- hine per annum make San Roque an ideal destination for lovers of sporting holiday enthusiasts and beach-loving sun-seekers alike. With nine golf clubs, some of which are the best courses on Continental Europe and have been the venues for relevant inter- national tournaments, San Roque has become a paradise for golf enthusiasts who find everything they need here to enjoy golf and other sports such as nautical sports and polo. San Roque's natural environment, marked by the mixture of Mediterra- nean and Atlantic eco-systems, is a real ecological marvel, highlights of which are the Pinar del Rey forest and the Guadiaro River Estuary . The former, a 338-hectare forest, hou- ses a great variety of vegetation and wildlife and is currently the most frequently visited natural recreatio- nal area in the municipality, thanks to its facilities and the nature trails available. The River Guadiaro Es- tuary, on the Mediterranean coast, is a 27-hectare protected area in- cluding the mouth of the river of the same name, which is also of great environmental value. San Roque's other great wonder is its old town, declared a Collection of Listed Monumental and Histori- cal Buildings in 1975 in recognition of its beauty and distinctive Andalu- sian appearance. Whitewashed houses with a multitude of wrought- iron bars guarding their windows and balconies, exquisitely decora- ted patios, wells and bright colours flood the steep alleyways of the town. There are also several outs- tanding historical monuments, in- cluding the Saint Mary the Crowned Parish Church (Santa María la Co- ronada), where the statue of the Vir- gin brought from Gibraltar is wors- hipped, and the Our Lady of Visita- tion Chapel (Visitación), which hou- ses a carving of Jesus of Nazareth also recovered from the British co- lony; the new Saint Roque Chapel, built in 1801, the Governor's Pala- ce, which dates back to the 18th century, and the City Hall (Casa Consistorial) located in the Plaza de Armas Square. Valderrama Golf Club is situated in the Sotogrande area and is world famous for being the only course in Europe to have hosted the Ryder Cup ‘97. It has also been used for the World Championship, which was sponsored by American Express and the Volvo Masters Tournament held here from 1986 to 1996 and from 2002 to the present day. Many consider San Roque the European Golf capital, as it already has nine golf clubs. Three of San Roque's golf courses are ranked among the fifty best courses in Europe: Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande and San Roque Club Old Course. The sport of polo also has a long history in the San Roque region, and has been a great tradition here from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. La Laguna de Torreguadiaro es un pequeño reducto natural de 2 hectáreas, entre el Puerto Sotogrande y el núcleo de Torreguadiaro. La laguna costera era un brazo de la desembocadura del Río Guadiaro, de unas 38 hectáreas, que quedó separado por cambios naturales y artificiales en el transcurso del siglo XX. Some of the most impressive nature areas in the Gibraltar Area are found within the borough, and known for the rich biodiversity which they enclose. One of these is the centrally-located Pinar del Rey (the King's Pine Forest), a suburban 338-hectare nature park. This outstanding wooded paradise has a curious and interesting historical background, dating back to 1800, when the Spanish Navy planted trees to provide timber for its warships. The Guadiaro River Estuary is a 38 hectare nature spot near the river mouth. In addition, the Torreguadiaro Lagoon is a small natural enclave covering 2 hectares between Puerto Sotogrande and the village of Torreguardiaro, which became separated from the Estuary by natural and artificial changes in the course of time in the 20th century. Ubicada en lo alto de un miradornatural, entre el Mar Mediterráneoy la Bahía de Algeciras, la ciudadgaditana de San Roque es conoci-da como la "Ciudad donde residela de Gibraltar", ya que fue funda-da por los gibraltareños que recha-zaron la oferta británica de que-darse en sus casas y se instalaronen torno a la Ermita de San Roquepara no someterse al dominio bri-tánico en 1704.
El municipio abarca un terrenomuy accidentado debido a la cer-canía de las sierras más meridio-nales del Sistema Bético y a lapresencia de numerosos arroyos.San Roque ha estado habitadodesde el Paleolítico por diferentespueblos, entre ellos fenicios, car-tagineses y romanos, fundadoresestos últimos de Carteia, ciudadde gran importancia en laHispania romana cuyas ruinas, si-tuadas entre el Cortijo delRocadillo y Torre Cartagena, guar-dan un gran valor arqueológico yaún pueden visitarse.
Gracias a su clima de veranos cá-lidos e inviernos suaves y a susmás de 3.000 horas de sol alaño, San Roque es un destinoideal tanto para los amantes delturismo deportivo como para losque buscan el sol y la playa. Así,es posible bañarse con vistas alEstrecho en las aguas de laBahía de Algeciras, donde se en-cuentran playas de bandera azulcasi vírgenes como Cala Sardina,Torreguadiaro o Alcaidesa-Torrecarbonera u otras playas co-
mo Campamento, PuenteMayorga, Guadarranque oSotogrande (en la urbanizacióndel mismo nombre, que constitu-ye uno de los más reconocidosnúcleos turísticos de Europa. Connueve clubes y algunos de losmejores campos del continente,en los que suelen celebrarse tor-neos internacionales, San Roquese ha convertido en los últimosaños en un paraíso para los afi-cionados al golf, que encuentranaquí todas las comodidades parapracticar este y otros deportescomo la vela y el polo.
El entorno natural de San Roque,marcado por la confluencia delas regiones mediterránea y
atlántica, es una auténtica ma-ravilla ecológica que tiene en elPinar del Rey y el Estuario del ríoGuadiaro sus máximos exponen-tes. El primero, un terreno de338 hectáreas que alberga unagran variedad de flora y fauna,constituye en la actualidad unode los espacios recreativos natu-rales más visitados de la comar-ca por sus instalaciones y por lavariedad de rutas que pueden re-alizarse. El Estuario del ríoGuadiaro, en el litoral mediterrá-neo, es un espacio protegido de
27 hectáreas que abarca la des-embocadura del río del mismonombre y posee también un granvalor medioambiental.
La otra gran maravilla de SanRoque es su casco antiguo, de-clarado Conjunto MonumentalHistórico Artístico en 1975 porsu belleza y aspecto netamenteandaluz. Casas de blancas pare-des en las que abundan venta-nas de rejas y balcones, patiosexquisitamente decorados, po-zos y colorido inundan las empi-nadas calles del municipio. Y asu vez, destacados monumentoscomo la Iglesia de Santa Maríala Coronada, donde se venera laimagen de la Virgen traída des-de Gibraltar; la Capilla de laVisitación, que alberga una tallade un Nazareno también recupe-rada de la colonia británica; lanueva Ermita de San Roque,construida en 1801; el Palaciode los Gobernadores, que datadel siglo XVIII o la CasaConsistorial, ubicada en laPlaza de Armas.
Entre los lugares más emblemá-ticos del centro de San Roquecabe citar la Alameda Alfonso XI,las calles General Lacy y CoronelMoscoso, que componen la co-nocida popularmente comoCalle Málaga, eje comercial dela villa; la Calle San Felipe, re-pleta de espectaculares facha-das, patios y balcones; la CalleSan Nicolás y la CalleHistoriador Montero, donde seencuentra un famoso tramo co-nocido como Calle de losEscaloncitos, la calle más popu-lar de San Roque por su pinto-resco aspecto.
