THE TRANSFIGURATION

You have probably been next to a celebrity without even realizing who they were until the end. I have had several anecdotes I could mention. One, for example, is as follows. At the 25th Anniversary of Up With People in Denver Colorado, I bought a very nice commemorative jacket. As I went to take a seat to watch the show, I was approached by a distinguished lady who asked me where I had bought my jacket. She wanted to buy one as well. I gladly accompanied her to purchase it and upon return she invited me to sit next to her and her husband. When the show presentation began, the conductor stated that honoring us with her presence was Princess Margaret of the Netherlands, to whom he asked to take a stand. Then, the distinguished lady who I had accompanied, stood to receive the applause. It was a great surprise for me to be next to a princess, who thereafter, befriended me. That surprise is comparable to that of when the shy reporter Clark Kent reveals to Lois Lane that he is Superman. The Apostles must have had a similar impact. Knowing, undoubtedly, that Jesus was an extraordinary type, due to His prodigies, His wisdom and the miracles He accomplished. But to see Him in His splendor and Devine Glory, conversing with Moses and Elijah, to hear the voice of God presenting Him as his Beloved Son . . . there is simply no comparison. They had co-existed with Jesus; they knew that he sweat, got tired, slept, ate and drank, like any other man. Who can imagine that He could be God? This revelation is extraordinary. One to talk about and make it known to the world. But Jesus did not want anyone to know until he was risen from the dead. When He rises, He is not recognized at first. He is mistaken for a gardener, a traveler and a fisherman. Maybe because Jesus wants to be recognized alive, at our side, and wants to be treated with the love we share with the people we encounter, in such a way that our respectful and kind treatment must be for everyone. Whether your spouse, your siblings, co-workers or school mates, the most insignificant, shy or repulsive person, in each of these, we must find Jesus. We don’t want Him to claim that He was hungry and we did not feed Him, He was thirsty and we did not quench His thirst, He was an outsider and we did not house Him, simply because we did not recognize Him as our neighbor. Lets not be taken by surprise.

Probablemente les haya pasado que han estado a lado de una celebridad sin darse cuenta con quién estaban sino hasta el final. A mí me han pasado varias anécdotas que podría mencionar para ilustrar la meditación de este día, pero como muestra basta un botón. En la reunión de 25 Aniversario de Up With People en Denver Colorado, me compré una chamarra conmemorativa muy bonita. Cuando me dirigía a ocupar un asiento para ver el espectáculo, fui interceptado por una distinguida señora que me preguntó dónde había comprado mi chamarra ya que ella también quería comprar una. Con gusto la acompañé para que la comprara y al regreso me invitó a sentarme

junto a ella y su esposo. Cuando dio comienzo la presentación para el Espectáculo, el conductor mencionó que nos honraba con su presencia la Princesa Margarita de Holanda a quién pidió que se pusiera de pie. Acto seguido, la distinguida señora a la que había acompañado, se puso de pie para recibir el aplauso. Fue una gran sorpresa para mí el estar a lado de una Princesa, que a partir de entonces me brindó su amistad. Esa sorpresa es comparable como cuando el tímido reportero Clark Kent le revela a Luisa Lane que en realidad es Superman. Un impacto semejante debió haberle pasado a los Apóstoles que indudablemente sabían que Jesús era un tipo extraordinario tanto por su sabiduría, su forma de actuar y los prodigios que hacía, pero verlo en todo su Esplendor y Gloria Divinos conversando con Moisés y Elías y escuchar la misma voz de Dios que lo presenta como su Hijo Muy Amado… Simplemente, no tiene comparación. Ellos habían convivido con Jesús, sabían que sudaba, se cansaba, dormía, comía y bebía al igual que cualquier otro hombre. ¿Cómo imaginar que pudiera ser Dios Encarnado? Esta revelación es extraordinaria. Es como para platicarlo y darlo a conocer a todo el mundo, pero Jesús no quiere que se sepa sino hasta haber resucitado de entre los muertos y, cuando lo hace, es confundido con un jardinero, con un caminante y con un pescador y no lo reconocen a primera instancia. Quizá porque Jesús quiere ser reconocido vivo a nuestro lado y quiere ser tratado con el amor que le profesamos en cada una de las personas con las que nos encontramos. De tal manera que nuestro trato reverencial, respetuoso y amable tienen que ser para todo mundo. Para con tu cónyuge, tus hermanos, compañeros de trabajo o escuela, para con la persona más insignificante, tímida o repugnante, pues en cada uno debemos encontrar a Jesús. No vaya a ser que al final de los tiempos nos reclame que tuvo hambre y no le dimos de comer, que tuvo sed y no le dimos de beber, que fue forastero y no le hospedamos, porque no lo reconocimos vivo en nuestro prójimo. No nos llevemos sorpresas.

Everything we know about the husband of

Mary and the foster father of Jesus comes from

Scriptures and that has seemed too little for those who

made up legends about him.

We know he was a carpenter, a working man,

for the skeptical Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "Is this not

the carpenter's son?" (Matthew 13:55). He wasn't rich,

for when he took Jesus to the Temple to be

circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the

sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons,

allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb

(Luke 2:24).

Despite his humble work and means, Joseph

came from a royal lineage. Luke and Matthew disagree

about some of the details of Joseph's genealogy, but they both mark

his descent from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-16

and Luke 3:23-38). Indeed, the angel who first tells Joseph about

Jesus, greets him as "son of David," a royal title used also for Jesus. We know Joseph was a compassionate, caring man. When

he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been betrothed, he

knew the child was not his, and was unaware that she was carrying

the Son of God. He planned to divorce Mary according to the law but

he was concerned for her suffering and safety. He knew that women

accused of adultery could be stoned to death, so he decided to not

expose her to shame or cruelty (Matthew 1:19-25).

We know Joseph was a man of faith, obedient to whatever

God asked of him without knowing the outcome. When the angel

came to Joseph in a dream and told him the truth about the child

Mary was carrying, Joseph immediately and without question or

concern for gossip, took Mary as his wife. When the angel came again

to tell him that his family was in danger, he immediately left

everything he owned, all his family and friends, and fled to a strange

country with his young wife and the baby. He waited in Egypt without

question until the angel told him it was safe to go back (Matthew 2:13

We know Joseph loved Jesus. His one concern was for the

safety of the child entrusted to him. Not only did he leave his home

to protect Jesus, but upon his return settled in the obscure town of

Nazareth out of fear for his life. When Jesus stayed in the Temple we

are told Joseph (along with Mary) searched with great anxiety for

three days for him (Luke 2:48). We also know that Joseph treated

Jesus as his own son for over and over the people of Nazareth say of

Jesus, "Is this not the son of Joseph?" (Luke 4:22)

We know Joseph respected God. He followed God's

commands in handling the situation with Mary and going to Jerusalem

to have Jesus circumcised and Mary purified after Jesus' birth. He is a

model as a father, a husband, an honest man and a hard worker.

Prayer for an End to Infanticide.- Bishop Cotta encourages us all to join this national prayer

and awareness campaign organized by the United States Conference

of Catholic Bishops.

The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive

Abortion Survivors Protection Act—legislation that prohibits

infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted

abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or

his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at

the same gestational age. Please join us in prayer for an end to

infanticide: “Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of our elected

leaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be

tolerated. We especially pray for our Senator(s) Diane Feinstein and

Kamela Harris. Open his/her/their heart(s) and mind(s) to recognize

and defend the precious gift of every human life.”

SAN JOSÉ

Modelo de padre y esposo, patrón de la Igle-

sia universal, de los trabajadores, de infinidad de comu-

nidades religiosas y de la buena muerte.

A San José Dios le encomendó la inmensa

responsabilidad y privilegio de ser esposo de la Virgen

María y custodio de la Sagrada Familia. Es por eso el

santo que más cerca esta de Jesús y de la Stma. Virgen

María.

Nuestro Señor fue llamado "hijo de José" (Juan 1:45;

6:42; Lucas 4:22) el carpintero (Mateo 12:55).

No era padre natural de Jesús (quién fue

engendrado en el vientre virginal de la Stma. Virgen

María por obra del Espíritu Santo y es Hijo de Dios),

pero José lo adoptó y Jesús se sometió a el como un

buen hijo ante su padre. ¡Cuánto influenció José en el desarrollo hu-

mano del niño Jesús! ¡Qué perfecta unión existió en su ejemplar matri-

monio con María!

San José es llamado el "Santo del silencio" No conocemos palabras expresadas por él, tan solo conocemos sus obras, sus actos de

fe, amor y de protección como padre responsable del bienestar de su

amadísima esposa y de su excepcional Hijo. José fue "santo" desde an-

tes de los desposorios. Un "escogido" de Dios. Desde el principio reci-

bió la gracia de discernir los mandatos del Señor.

Las principales fuentes de información sobre la vida de San

José son los primeros capítulos del evangelio de Mateo y de Lucas. Son

al mismo tiempo las únicas fuentes seguras por ser parte de la Revela-

ción.

San Mateo (1:16) llama a San José el hijo de Jacob; según San

Lucas (3:23), su padre era Heli. Probablemente nació en Belén, la ciu-

dad de David del que era descendiente. Pero al comienzo de la historia

de los Evangelios (poco antes de la Anunciación), San José vivía en Na-

zaret.

Según San Mateo 13:55 y Marcos 6:3, San José era un

"tekton". La palabra significa en particular que era carpintero. San Jus-

tino lo confirma (Dial. cum Tryph., lxxxviii, en P. G., VI, 688), y la tradi-

ción ha aceptado esta interpretación.

Si el matrimonio de San José con La Stma. Virgen ocurrió

antes o después de la Encarnación aun es discutido por los exegetas. La

mayoría de los comentadores, siguiendo a Santo Tomás, opinan que en

la Anunciación, la Virgen María estaba solo prometida a José. Santo

Tomás observa que esta interpretación encaja mejor con los datos

bíblicos.

Los hombres por lo general se casaban muy jóvenes y San

José tendría quizás de 18 a 20 años de edad cuando se desposó con

María. Era un joven justo, casto, honesto, humilde carpintero...ejemplo

para todos nosotros.

Oración para ponerle fin al infanticidio.- El Obispo Cotta nos anima a todos a unirnos a esta campaña

de oración y concientización organizada por la Conferencia de Obispos

Católicos de los Estados Unidos.

El Senado de Estados Unidos recientemente no adoptó la Ley

Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection [Ley de Protección a Sobre-

vivientes de Abortos Nacidos Vivos], legislación que prohíbe el infanti-

cidio al asegurar que un niño que haya nacido vivo después de un inten-

to de aborto reciba el mismo grado de atención para preservar su vida

y salud que cualquier otro niño que nazca vivo a la misma edad gesta-

cional. Recemos juntos para pedir el fin del infanticidio: “Jesús, Señor de la Vida, transforma el corazón de nuestros

dirigentes electos para que reconozcan que el infanticidio está mal y no

debe tolerarse. Rezamos especialmente por nuestro(s) Senador(es)

Diane Feinstein y Kamela Harris. Te pedimos que abras su corazón y su

mente para que reconozcan y defiendan el don preciado de cada vida

SOLICITUD MINISTERIAL DEL OBISPO PROXIMA SEMANA.-

ADORACION Y VIA CRUCIS DURANTE LA CUARESMA. REGRESAN LOS JOVENES DE GUADALAJARA.- Los hermanos Santiago y Ricardo García Corral y dos amigos más de Guadalajara vendrán a darnos los Ejercicios Cuaresmales a nuestra Parroquia de San José. Ellos son jóvenes muy bien preparados en nuestra fe y será de gran beneficio para todos, sobre todo para nuestros jóvenes de confirmación que quedarán encantados de haber participado. No falten. SAN PATRICIO.- Este Santo Obispo eligió regresar como pastor a la tierra donde fue esclavo para erradicar las supersticiones y las herejías de los Druidas. Utilizaba un trébol para explicar el Misterio de la Santísima Trinidad. Su festividad ha caído en el folklore celebrándolo con alcohol y otros excesos ajenos a la Fe Cristiana que él predico. Les invitamos a Celebrar sobriamente a este gran Santo este Domingo 17 de Marzo.

SEGUNDA COLECTA ESTA SEMANA.- La cuenta por remover la nieve este mes ha sido por $16,000.00. Esta es una cantidad extraordinaria de dinero que va mucho más allá del presupuesto y estamos muy cortos en la economía, especialmente porque las entradas en las colectas han sido escasas debido a la poca asistencia y a la cancelación de Misas en las Misiones debido a las fuertes tormentas de nieve. Les pedimos que hagan un esfuerzo extra en su generosidad y nos ayuden a solventar estos gastos extraordinarios. Gracias.

HOLY HOUR AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS.- Every Thursday of Lent after the 6:00 pm Mass, we will have a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament at both St. Joseph’s Church and the Missions. California Catholic Bishops Welcome Death Penalty Moratorium “We thank Governor Newsom for this decision, and pray that this moratorium will bear fruit for a more just and equitable solution to addressing the violence that plagues our society.”

SAINT PATRICK.- This Holy Bishop chose to return as a Pastor to the land that once he was a slave to eradicate the superstitions and heresies of the old Druids. He used a clover to explain the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. His festivity has fallen into folklore, celebrating it with alcohol and other excesses foreign to the Christian Faith he preached. We invite you to celebrate this great Saint soberly this Sunday March 17. THIS WEEK´S 2d COLLECTION.- This month´s snow removal bill was for $16,000.00 This is an extraordinary amount of money that goes beyond the expected budget and we are very short in the economy, especially since the collections has been very low because the short assistance and cancelation of Masses on the Missions because the snow storms. We ask for extra effort of your generosity to help us deal with this extraordinary expenses. Thank you. BIRTHDAY.- Bishop Myron Cotta´s birthday is on Thursday, March 21. Let us pray for him.
