I want to thank Valarie and her team for a great Valentine’s Day Rally. I convinced my Valentine partner,

Marlene, to dress up the same so we would be guaranteed a prize for “best dressed couple” as I told her

we would never win “closest to the the course time” or the “most correct answers”! I learned I should

never doubt our own abilities!! We won the “most correct answers”!!! The weather was great and we

had a great time with SJCC friends.

I see the calendar is starting to fill up with events, including some ones one not done before! Mark your

calendar for March 22 and let’s meet at Corvette World of Houston. You may come and go as you need.

Looks like Chip and Gordon also have a fun trip planned on the 29th too!

With Spring arriving just around the corner, we will see an increase in car shows on the calendar. Remem-

ber this year we decided not to do the Corvette Chevy Expo (3 days) as a club but instead to support our

fellow local Houston clubs with their charity car shows. Sam Houston CC, Space City CC, National Afro

American CC, and Corvette Owners Club of Houston have all their dates on our SJCC Calendar. There will be

SJCC points given so put these dates on your calendar too! Would be great if everyone could try to make

at least one of these shows! The first coming up is:

Sunday, March 29: Sam Houston Corvette Club Car Show

Location: K1 Speed, 14900 Northwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77040; Entry Fee $35

9 am—12 noon: set up and registration

12 noon—2 pm: People Choice Voting

4 pm—Awards

I assume that by now everyone realizes that I am full of little catch phrases or as I prefer “Words to

live by.” Most often used being is, “If you don’t have a Plan B, then you don’t have a Plan A.” Kathie

and I had planned to go see our son who is stationed at the Pentagon and just received orders for Af-

ghanistan and was to deploy on February 20th. We have been wanting to go see DC and John and

family, but not necessarily at that time of the year. Kathie’s sister from New Orleans was scheduled

to come to the Medical Center for testing. Great, she can stay at our house and take care of the dogs

while we are gone, and seeing how she is not on my list of favorite people, I won’t have to be there

while she is. Not so great, we get word the day before the Bandit Run that she will be there that Sun-

day, so everything I thought I had two weeks to do before her arrival I now have to miss the run and

get done in one day. Really not so great the following weekend is the chili cook off and I can hear the

applause for my award winning chili. Wrong, Kathie has rounds that weekend so I have to “make

nice” and am not allowed to hide in my garage. As Jim Colvin says, “Suzanne scares me. But Kathie

scares the Hell out of me.”

Special “Thanks” to Ken Koenig and Marilyn Bakenhus for handling the raffle and auction at the Feb-

ruary meeting, believe they did better without me there. Thanks also to Valerie Hendershot for the

cupcakes I understand she brought, and to those who brought items for the March raffle. Psst – I

love cupcakes. I understand Rick Owen is our first featured Christmas party spot light dancer with his

winning bid for the February auction. Thanks and congratulations, Rick.

See ya at the Meeting

ACTIVITIES

What a beautiful day to drive. It was a little chilly in the morning with a slight breeze and the sun shining. After the drivers and navigators fueled up with high caffeinated drinks they were ready to begin.

With the sparkles of sun rays bouncing off the polished Corvette’s they line up to receive their first desti-nation letter. Walt handed them the wax sealed red envelope to be open only in case of complete disori-entation. Then Walt, Mark, and Paul timed 2 minute interval departures. Jan, Jeri and I were scattered in different directions with the delicious food for the end of each leg.

On the first leg of the race the drivers headed east towards Clear Lake. They enter Ellington Field where the Astronauts train and were given a tour around the “Vomit Comet” In the end they enjoyed hot coffee, doughnuts, kolaches, and other tasty appetizers at Jeri and Mark Veile’s home. Then they were off to the second house.

On the way to the next location the drivers zoomed up and over Kemah’s big bridge and gazed down on the second largest marina in the US. They were directed past a little known park, “The Bayou Wildlife Zoo”, which is worth another drive to spend the day. Then on to Friendswood where Buddha found his head and where many now know what a natatorium is used for. Here they were able to breathe a sigh of relief as they enter a Cupid’s wonderland of hearts, roses and glitz. Some came in with smiles and laugh-er and others came in with “What the H____!!!” But all could enjoy a hot Italian meal with a choice of pastas, vegetables, and hot garlic bread. Unfortunately, some faint of heart were not able to continue the adventure. We missed all of your faces but hope you found your way home without additional mishaps or knock down arguments.

The next leg was to the east for Desserts!!!!. This part of the journey led members past mementos of the Great Space Program, passing NASA and two T-38 astronaut training jets and a mock up of the Space Shuttle before rounding the peaceful Bay Shore park. Onward to South Shore Harbor where members were welcomed by Herb Noakes. They relaxed inside his beautiful home and outside on the serene patio while enjoying loads of sweets; chocolate fondue, scrumptious pineapple upside down cake and so much more. While they were all relaxing Walt, Paul and Mark were crunching numbers to see who had the closest times and most correct answers to the not so easy clues. Jan, Jeri and I were chatting about who was the cutest couple.

And the results were……….

ACTIVITIES

………………………...……….

For the closest elapsed time, Jeff and Anne Markwart. They received a hand painted tote bag filled with romantic movies, for her The Notebook, and for him Couple’s Retreat, along with popcorn.

Suzanne Ansley and Marlene Pattillo won the most correctly answered questions. Their last question will be, “How to divide up the goodies?” A bottle of “Ménage a Trois” wine, a crystal wine stopper and box of decadent chocolates awaited them in their hand painted tote bag.

Our third gift went to our cutest couple, Charles and Marcia Ynman. The smiles and cute attitudes they brought into each host’s home and their coordinating outfits added happiness to the day. As they were receiving their gift they both acted as if they just won an Emmy. Their hand painted tote bag was filled with heart shape pasta, heart healthy tomato sauce to be served in the white china pasta bowl with a pasta spoon. Now they have the ingredients for their next romantic meal. It was a close call with Suzanne and Marlene adorned in heart antennas and matching heart socks.

At the end of the day we had 34 attendees with 14 cars. Only a few dared not to run the route, a few we lost along the way and a few needing marriage counselors but I didn’t hear of calls to divorce lawyers so our annual Valentine’s Day Rally has been declared a success!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you again Mark and Jeri Veile, Herb Noakes, Paul and Jan Grout and a non-Corvette member and my dear friend, Diane Stuart. I couldn’t have done this without your help.

Board of Director’s Meeting Minutes for Grand Sport

January 20, 2014

The Board of Directors of the San Jacinto Corvette Club, Inc. held the monthly meeting at Auto Nation Chevrolet Gulf Freeway,

13800 Gulf Freeway, Houston, Texas 77034. A quorum of the Board was present. President, Suzanne Ansley, called the

meeting to order at 6:55 P. M.

Directors in attendance were Ken Bakenhus, Frank Bobbie, Ginny Pearce, Mark White, Geoff Ansley and Charles Ynman. Officers

present were: Suzanne Ansley, Marcia Ynman, Dana Petroni, Valarie Hendershot, Bill Heede, Marlene Pattillo and Paul Grout.

The Board approved the Board of Director’s Meeting minutes from December, 2013.

Treasurer’s Report: Dana Petroni distributed the Treasurer’s Report to Board Member and announced the club’s monthly

expenses. The Board approved the report and monthly expenses.

Membership: Paul Grout advised that membership remains at 209. Also, the new membership application is now on the SJCC

website.

Activities Report: Valarie Hendershot presented the following activities for Board Approval:

March 15 – Southwest Region Banquet

March 22 – Street and Meet Car Show at Corvette World of Houston

April 18, 19, 20 – Tour de Fleur with Mike Kochanowsky, Chairman

July 12 – SJCC Club Birthday at Geoff and Suzanne Ansley’s house

July 26 – Backyard Bash at Alena & Bill Heede’s house

The Board approved the above activities.

Discussion on Other Activities:

Bob Pattillo introduced options for the First Choice Event to be held on October 4 to 6, 2014. He said that the turnout at the

Police Academy was very small last year, and there may be a better turnout if the event were to be held at the Grandsport

Speedway, which is higher in price. The Board approved a motion to reserve the Police Academy with an $80 non-refundable

deposit and for Bob to continue to negotiate with the Grandsport Speedway on their cost. Bob will present his findings at the

Valarie Hendershot suggested using a one-on one notification system that would send members about upcoming event infor-

mation on their phones.

Valarie Hendershot also suggested that the club consider having the annual awards banquet in January, rather in December.

More venues are available in January than in December and the cost should be lower.

Paul Grout directed everyone’s attention to his Membership Report in the Grand Sport where he wrote about the importance

of greeting each new member personally at meetings and events.

National Corvette Museum Report: Ken Bakenhus discussed the following issues:

The Motor Sports track is still under construction and on schedule and suggested listing all of the caravan participants in the

Grand Sport.

Ken will continue to raise money for the One Acre Fund that needs approximately $3,500 to meet the goal.

News Editor Report: Linda Lee sent out an email to request news items for the Grand Sport.

New Business:

Suzanne Ansley advised the following:

She is in the process of securing committee chairpersons and members who will be responsible for the refreshments at club

meetings.

She would like for the Board to consider implementing term limits for Board Members and requested that at the next meeting,

the Board make suggestions on how to accomplish this.

The 2013 SJCC internal financial audit has been completed and it will be distributed to Board members prior to the February

Board meeting.

Since there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:12 P.M.

SJCC NCM ONE ACRE CLUB UPDATE Thanks to the generosity of all the One Acre Club donors, we are closing in on our goal of $15,000.00. As of 2-17-14, the SJCC One Acre Club fund is at $13,855.00. If you have not contributed yet, please jump in and help SJCC reach our goal, only $1,145.00 to go. Over the next four months we will have various items for sale, auction and always open to a donation to the One Acre Club in any amount. Coins do add up to dollars, at the February membership meeting we received $160.00 in coins I’m sure everyone has heard about the sink hole at the NCM. For those of you that do not receive NCM email updates I have included the following update from Wendell Strode on the sink hole repair progress. From Wendell Strode:

2/17/2014 Update - activity picked up as workers began doing various tasks back in the Sky Dome, including removing some of

the yellow panels. See my previous update from the local TV station. In the meantime, there was a meeting in our conference

room with all the major players.......5 from the construction management firm, 4 from the Geo Tech engineering firm, 2 from the

civil engineering firm, 2 from WKU Center for Cave and Karst Studies, 1 from environmental engineering firm, 1 from Chubb In-

surance, 3 consultants retained by Chubb and 3 from the NCM.

Lots of discussion concerning future plans. While there will always be some decisions made onsite and when executing the

agreed on plan, this is what I understood to be the agreed on plan.

(1) Secure and Stabilize the red spire. Hayward Bacon Inc. the Geo Tech engineering firm will be handling this.

(2) Extract the 3 cars that are on top and appear to be easily accessible.

(3) Secure and stabilize the sinkhole area (various options discussed)

(4) Extract the remaining cars. Please note previous photo from the National Corvette Museum that showed six of the cars.

(5) Begin work on mitigating the entire sinkhole area. This will include exploring the caverns that can be seen in some of the pre-

vious video/photos. At this time, the plan is to remove all the dirt from the sinkhole to allow the WKU Cave/Karst professionals

and others to see the floor and the caverns (some people get excited about going down and into these areas). One observation

that was repeated today and I do not believe I have shared with everyone - for the sinkhole to be 25 - 30 feet deep, then it had to

fall that far........so 'bottom' will be another 25 - 30 feet deep......or approximately 60 feet actual depth.

(6) Finalize plan and implement plan to mitigate the entire sinkhole area.

(7) Finalize plan and then execute plan for repairs to Sky Dome floor.

AMBASSADOR REPORT March 2014

Page Up Page Down 14

Keep in mind that this is a layman's understanding and summary of all the discussion and agreements reached from about 7 - 8

hours of talks. Tomorrow I plan to visit with the Construction Manager and confirm this. If different I will share with you in the next

day or two.

Hayward Bacon will have equipment and employees here within two days and will begin (1) above. This will not be an easy task,

but one they are very comfortable doing and I guess this is why they are the # 1 geo tech engineering firm in the world.

In the meantime, several other tasks were agreed on. Cost estimates are being prepared for each of these. While every profession-

al associated with this project feels confident that this sinkhole is an isolated case, a series of drillings, borings and tests will be

completed.

The Sky Dome and the area out back (old PDI and the parking area out back) will become a full fledge construction zone. Tempo-

rary fence will be installed and the Construction Manager will be bringing in a trailer (office). We will have night time security and

there will be times it will be 24 hours. The companies involved with this plan to work 5 10-hour days and 8 hours on Saturday.

We will be renting a warehouse to take the excess cars to as we are crammed tight right now.

Probably no update tomorrow as mostly it is doing what we outlined above. Scripture tells us that God's compassion never

fails.....that they are renewed every morning and great is His faithfulness. His love has been awesome this far on our journey and

knowing He will be with us and His compassion for us will be renewed tomorrow and all other tomorrows gives all of us strength

for the journey.

In the meantime, the public hearing for the Detailed Development Plan for the NCM Motorsports Park is scheduled for 2/20/2014.

This will be with the Planning and Zoning Commission. Our new General Manager has stepped right in and has been quite involved

in every aspect of that. Working with our Construction Manager, Warren County Public Works, and civil engineering company, DDS

Engineering, we believe this should be approved. This DDP will then allow us to apply for building permits for the control tower,

garages and move forward with all our plans that are outlined on www.motorsportspark.org

Newspaper article: BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Construction is well underway at the National Corvette Museum. Red tape is being put up; extra

support is being added to the structure; and side panels are being taken out of the wall to make room for a crane. That crane has

the big task of pulling the cars out of the sinkhole.

Geologists with WKU have been on the scene since the room first collapsed and said since that time, things in the sky dome have

remained relatively calm opening up the door for construction.

"It looks pretty stable. We haven't seen any major movement where the cars are at. There's obviously some type of potential for

some other type of cave or passage under there that it could move into," said WKU Geologist, Jason Polk.

Just to be safe holes are being cut into the floor and filled with concrete at key points to provide extra support for the spire that

sits in the middle of the room. Once that's done a crane will be lowered into the area where pieces of wall have been taken out.

Not only will someone be operating the crane, someone will also be attached to the end of the line to hook up the cars.

"We will have vehicle recovery people that know all of the lifting points and devices to use in the rigging to lift it out properly with-

out causing anymore damage," said Scott, Murphy, & Daniel CEO, Mike Murphy.

The plan is for the wheels to be removed and replaced by bolts that attach the car to the crane for safe removal.

Construction officials add the first two Corvettes that fell inside the hole still haven't been seen. They know they're down there.

They're just not sure if they're buried in soil or if they're sitting on rock. It adds a wrinkle to an already difficult excavation process.

The entire recovery is expected to take two weeks.

Now, back to the One Acre Club fund raising, I still have a few of the Commemorative Flint, Michigan bricks

with a 2014 Corvette on top. Each brick is an authentic numbered brick from the original 1953 Corvette as-

sembly plant in Flint, Michigan. The brick will come with a certificate of authenticity. All you have to do to

obtain one of these bricks is to donate a minimum $200 to the One Acre Club. Now for those that have previ-

ously contributed, don’t fret, your previous donation

can be applied toward the $200. Please note, the Cor-

vette is a 1:24 scale model, but the brick is actual brick

size.

I will also have a few 2014 dealer brochures for sale at

$20 each. These brochures are full color and cram

packed with many pictures that will have you wanting

In the March membership meeting we will be auctioning this beauti-

ful 75”X92” quilt donated by Denise & Mike Munoz. All proceeds will

go toward the SJCC One Acre Club. The quilt will be on display at the

LaGrange Car Run Saturday, March 29th

The members of San Jacinto Corvette Club have been invited to visit John Burk-land’s fantastic automobile collection in LaGrange. John will have over 1 40 of the finest cars ever built on display for us to enjoy. If you have not seen his collection, you are in for a real treat - he just added 10 more from the Barrett-Jackson auction. And, to top it off, he is also providing lunch for us!

We will meet at the Exxon station, exit 723 on I-10 W, at 9:00 AM and head out around 9:15AM. It is a fun drive to LaGrange and Gordon will lead the way in his new C7.

All you need to bring is an empty bladder, empty stomach and a full tank of gas. Also, bring your CB radio if you have one.

Since John is feeding us, we will need a head count by March 25th.

Please RSVP to Gordon or Chip.

Tour de Fleur – Part Seventeen “The quest for the flower continues…”

Well it is about time to saddle up and head to the Hill Country. Seems hard to believe that this will be seventeenth year, and I still have as much fun as I did in year one. Easter falls later this year so the flower viewing might not be as profuse as in years past. All we can do is hope that the cold winter has held the flowers back. We have a new account manager at the hotel and she was crying about our pricing but after much haggling I got her to agree to only a $10 night increase. Not know which route we will take to get to Fredericksburg, or where we will be stopping for lunch. As of yet do not even where we will wander to Saturday morning, but I can tell you it will have some quaint and interesting spot for lunch. There is a flyer in the Grand Sport so check it out, call in your reservations and stay tuned for further details. Senior Cruz Master Mike K
