My Dear Friends of Mission,
At San Gabriel Mission High School, our young
women are empowered intellectually,
physically, and spiritually each day. With a
unique blend of motivation, depth, character,
respect, and integrity, each student is an integral
part of the Mission family and our community.
We honor the faith and charisms of our founding
orders, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San
Jose and the Claretian Missionaries. Veritas,
which is Latin for truth, is the name of the
Campus Ministry Team, and is also a credo for
the entire student body and staff. As they
constantly strive for truth in all aspects of their lives, the students find growth in their faith formation
through prayer, service, and reflection. At Mission, we serve, we learn, we pray, and we become a better
version of ourselves.
In a student centered classroom, our young women gain knowledge to make connections in the world
around and beyond them. By using a vigorous curriculum with access to Honors, Advanced Placement, and
International Baccalaureate programs, students learn to take risks and challenge the status quo. As open
minded young women, our students are able to think critically while also respecting diversity. With a
balanced curriculum, experienced teachers, and academic counselors, students are prepared to succeed in
college and beyond.
A vast number of opportunities for extracurricular activities, such as Associated Student Body, Student
Council, Athletics, and Veritas Campus Ministry Team, gives our young women the ability to become prin-
cipled leaders. Students are able to join activities they are interested in as well as create new clubs or
activities they are passionate about.
It is here at San Gabriel Mission High School where students find their passion through academics, student
life, service and community and find a meaningful purpose in this world. As women leaders of the future,
our students build their foundation to bring about the much needed change in our ever evolving society.
I am honored to accept the position of Principal of San Gabriel Mission High School and to watch the
growth of our young women each and everyday in all aspects of their life. Now is the time to be at Mission,
and I am blessed to be a part of it!
God Bless,
A Message from the Principal

Ms. Marielle Sallo
Ms. Marielle Sallo was appointed Principal this Spring 2015. We have had many leaders over the years to take
Mission to new heights of success. It is now time to begin a new chapter with the leadership of Ms. Marielle
Sallo, the new Principal of San Gabriel Mission High School.
Ms. Sallo first entered the Mission community in 2008 as a Math and Science teacher. She then was appointed
Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, a position she has held for four years. She is currently working
on her Doctoral Degree at UCLA in the Education Leadership Program. We are thrilled to have someone with a
passion for education and who will continue to enhance all that SGMHS has to offer young women.

ht On April 23rd, Senior Lauren Peters signed with Concordia College, New York, to play college
volleyball at the NCAA Division II level. She signed her contract proudly alongside the Mis-
sion Community. She was humbled by everyone’s presence as she made her announcement.
She thanked her coaches, friends, faculty and staff and especially her family for being a part of
her journey.
Lauren is a wonderful well rounded student with a long list of accomplishments in sports,
including 2 Time All League Most Valuable Player and is listed in Southern California as the
Top 50 in the Blocks category.
Although Lauren also had full scholarship offers from Alcorn State University (Division I),
Daemen College (Division II), she felt the most at home at Concordia College.
Your Mission family will be rooting for you during this volleyball season!

Senior Claire Cruz was selected from over thousands of applicants nationwide to be awarded
the privilege of a Posse Scholar. The process of being selected to be a Posse Scholar is com-
petitive and extensive. The Posse Foundation Program has been proven to be a successful tool
for students in their college careers.
It assists students to pay full tuition and creates a support system among students. The Posse
Foundation has been recognized by President Obama and many key leaders as a unique and
successful model for success. The program is partnered with a variety of higher education
institutions around the country. After much research, Claire chose Tulane University in New
Orleans to pursue an education in Political Science/International Relations with a minor in
Psychology. She will be attending this University on a full scholarship.
Claire Cruz is the second student from San Gabriel Mission High School to be selected to be a
Posse Scholar.

University of California Irvine Bound - Nadine Mora '15
Most recent high school graduates would enjoy their summer by going on vacation
and resting before they begin college, but Nadine Mora never stops. She
volunteered at San Gabriel Mission High School over the summer to assist with the
Summer STEM program. Nadine is always motivated to continue to serve and
share her time with others.
Nadine Mora has been recognized through her education in a Catholic school as a
woman of service and integrity. She earned the honor of being the Salutatorian of
her class. She comes from a hardworking family who has given her a wonderful
example of going above and beyond to accomplish her goals.
This Fall, she will begin her new journey at the University of California, Irvine to
pursue a degree in Business. She is excited about this new chapter in her life.
Meet the new ASB President, Ashley Lanuza. Ashley is a great student at Mission. She is an
active student and is an IB Student. She will be part of the first graduating class to have
completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Besides her academic acco-
lades, she is a VERITAS member, part of the National Honors Society and also interns to
write columns at the Mid Valley Newspaper.
She is passionate about serving others and is truly a woman of depth. Last year, she helped
plan and organize a successful charity concert to aid the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
Congratulations Ashley Lunuza!

Alumna Spotlight: Kelsey Rogoff ‘13
During the Summer of 2015, the Alumni Office reached out to alumna Kelsey Rogoff, Class of 2013, to see what her
journey has been during the past two years.
What has your life been after Mission?
“If it wasn’t for Mission, I would not have been able to make it through the 2 years. It has prepped me to become the
woman that I am…It helped me find places in my life that I didn’t believe I could get to.”
Kelsey candidly shared her college experience as being an eye opening experience. She attended Notre de Dame Namur
University in northern California. She shared stories of her challenges while attending the university. She learned key
lessons such as independence and learning to use her voice.
After graduating from high school she shared that she had room in her life to practice her virtues and values. Upon fin-
ishing her 2nd year at NDNU, she found that the school was not the right fit for the path she had envisioned for herself.
She applied to a handful of schools and now is enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC).
What kind of student were you at Mission?
“I was overly involved in sports, student council, and prided myself on being an academic student. I identified with a
lot of groups on campus.”
What do you miss from Mission?
“The sisterhood... Once you leave, you begin to ponder more about the (high school) experience. I look back at the
memories with my sisters, and I would say I miss the sisterhood bond the most.“
What do you hope to achieve by your 10 year high school reunion?
“I will be there at my 10 year reunion and probably organize it. I truly see myself as being a person of service… I
really want to help the world. Hopefully (10 years from now) I will begin a nonprofit by creating positive change or
work as a peacekeeper for the United Nations.”
Why do you think it is important to stay connected to the Mission community?
“Regardless if it is through the high school or the parish I think it is fundamental to stay connected to the Mission
community… because it is important to remember where we came from.”
There are many young alumni like you that are not in the position to give back financially just yet. How have you
found ways to give back?
Kelsey has found the time to carve out of her schedule to give back to the Mission community. She has volunteered in a
Summer Camp program that the San Gabriel Mission Parish offers to community members to provide recreational activi-
ties, life skills and tutoring. She visits SGMHS often. She explained, “I represent what a Mission alumna should do for
this community. I was given opportunities through Mission, and I am grateful.”
If you could change your high school yearbook quote, what would you change it to now?
In Kelsey’s senior year, she chose the quote “Don’t worry be happy” for the yearbook. After the past two years she has
grown and shared with us that she wouldn’t change it, but instead would add more to her quote. She said she would add,
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” because she says it is necessary to stay optimistic during the times of hard-
ship.
What advice could you share with a student at Mission?
Kelsey currently has a cousin attending Mission. She said that she shares the following advice:
“You won’t remember staying up studying for a test or the drama between friends. What you will remember will be
the last moments you have with them and the moments that began your experience at Mission. Those are the mo-
ments that will mean the most because those are the only ones that you will remember. Once you find your purpose
and meaning, the rest will prosper.”
Could you please finish this sentence: My mission is…
“To revolutionize.”
Page 19
Page 20
The SGMHS Alumni Office interviewed Jack Dooling, class of 1956 to catch a glimpse of his life after Mission.
What kind of student were you at SGMHS?
“ An average student and athlete.”
Jack shared short stories of his years at Mission. He admits to being a mischievous student with his friends
from time to time. As a basketball player, he and the team had success, reaching the CIF Semi-Finals his
Junior year and All League his Senior year.
What has your life been after Mission?
“Interesting.”
After leaving Mission, Jack joined the Army. When he completed his service, he moved to Northern
California and enrolled at Santa Clara University pursuing a career in Accounting. He expressed that Santa
Clara University was one of the most important decisions in his life. It was in Northern California where he
met Mary K, his wife and started a family. Mary K and Jack, pursued a career that took them to 10 cities in
18 years. They now reside in Los Altos, California.
What kind of service do you share with the world?
Jack Dooling met Dr. Jack Faia who was volunteering his time and efforts to give free dental services in
various countries including Peru, Honduras, Vietnam and others. Jack had the opportunity to view a video
of Dr. Faia and his team’s work and became inspired to join their cause. Jack was perplexed because he did
not have any knowledge in the dentistry field; however he quickly realized that the volunteer work he
would be doing would not be as in depth as he thought. Jack’s work consisted of basic tasks assisting the
dentists with sterilizing their materials. He joked with us and said, “I could do that, it didn’t take much
aptitude.”
As Jack spoke to us during the interview his tone grew with excitement as he described the people of the
volunteer program and the kind of work they did. This group of volunteers most recently provided their
services to children and adults in a small village in Guatemala. In total, the team in one week cared for over
400 individuals. What Jack enjoyed most of the experience was the camaraderie of the volunteers and the
people from the villages. It was truly a heartwarming and humbling experience for him. Jack has generously
shared his time with this program for the past 10 years. He plans to visit and volunteer next year 2016 with
his son and granddaughter.
What advice could you share with a student from Mission?
“Start doing service work early because you’ll never regret it.”
Jack shared, “You get way more out of the volunteering activity then you put into it.” He also shared that
each student should learn to explore their spirituality, to find the “God of your understanding.”
When have you been most satisfied in your life?
My marriage to Mary K our children and grandchildren.”
Could you please finish this sentence: My mission is…
“Treat others as you would like to be treated.”

Alumni Quote:
I first had the honor and privilege of
meeting Mr. Hanrahan when I was
approximately 5 yrs. old. It was at
Garvey Park in the city of Rosemead
(then called South San Gabriel) where
I started playing sports and where Mr.
Hanrahan was a youth sports/activities
coach and monitor. We called him
"John" then as most everyone did and
which he encouraged. John was highly
respected, and though he typically had
a no nonsense approach and de-
meanor, we grew fond of him due to
his leadership, friendliness, fairness,
kindness, encouragement and good
sense of humor. My brothers Al, Rich-
ard and I and countless other Rose-
mead youth benefitted in so many posi-
tive ways from knowing and being un-
der the guidance of John.
When I entered SGMHS as a freshman
in 1964, I was accompanied by many
friends from families (Ramirez, Qu-
ezada, Rodriguez, Alvarez, Bartolini,
Baron, Paiz, just to name a few.) We
first met through sports activities at
Garvey Park and attended St. An-
thony's parochial school and/or par-
ish. We were thrilled when we learned
John was going to be our English
teacher, and we all knew our past rela-
tionship with him would somehow give
us an edge in the new world of high
school we were beginning. I recall
walking into John's English class for
the first time. He was sitting at his
desk and wearing a suit and tie instead
of the usual polo shirt and khaki pants
or shorts we were accustomed to see-
ing him wear. I had walked in with
some of my Rosemead and St. An-
thony's buddies and one of them
looked at him and made the mistake of
saying, "Hi John!" Right then and
there John let it be known to us in no
uncertain terms that we were not at
Garvey Park anymore and that he was
to be addressed as Mr. Hanrahan from
that day on. And so it was. We had no
problem with it because we had so
much respect and admiration for the
man. Though he mentioned sports on
rare occasions, it was academics that
was his primary focus. He introduced
us to so many great literary classics/
novels and helped us to understand
and gain knowledge of the English
language to the best of his ability.
Needless to say, we had to earn our
way as our past dealings with
Mr. Hanrahan did not give us a leg up
after all. But that goes to his credit
and showed the high level of integrity
he had. As a teacher he easily com-
manded respect and our attention
without asking or demanding it. He
was an expert in the subject matter,
was both friendly and stern, approach-
able, thorough, professional, patient
and extraordinary in so many other
ways. He was simply one of the best
teachers I've ever had. I will always
feel blessed that I was one of his stu-
dents. He was one of those persons in
my life that had a huge positive impact
on me and someone I shall never for-
get. Thank you, Mr. Hanrahan, for all
you did for us. May you rest in peace
and may God bless you!
-Fernie (Fernando) Vasquez ‘68
Remembering John Hanrahan On March 27, 2015, San Gabriel Mission High School lost a special community member. SGMHS remembers Mr.
John Hanrahan, for dedicating 25 years of service to our community and his gift for teaching. John was one of the five
original teachers when Mission opened its doors in 1949. He is considered to have been the finest and one of the most
respected teachers of his time. His life, character and example inspired our alumni to raise funds to award a scholarship
in his name. Year after year, a student who is an academic achiever and actively involved in the parish, athletics or
school activities is blessed with the opportunity to succeed through the assistance of this scholarship. Mission is proud
and fortunate to have had John as a teacher and role model. He has touched the lives of many and will truly be missed.
Page 23
If you would like to donate funds towards the scholarship in his honor, you may make a check payable to San
Gabriel Mission High School and state in the memo line: John Hanrahan Scholarship Fund. We have had over
$1,500 in donations in loving memory of John Hanrahan. You can help join us in keeping his memory alive
through donating to The John Hanrahan Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Mission 65 Update During this past school year, 2014-2015, the San Gabriel Mission High School community joined together to celebrate
its 65th Anniversary. We had an overwhelming amount of support to celebrate and commemorate the success of our stu-
dents and alumni.
To celebrate this milestone, it was our goal to raise $65,000 to commemorate our 65th anniversary. All the funds raised
have been instrumental in enhancing the school and enabling young women to have a Catholic education. With the
generosity of donors sharing gifts ranging from ten dollars to eleven thousand dollars, the school has been able to make
improvements that were long over due. In addition, we have been able to help families keep their daughters in Catholic
Education by relieving their financial burden through much needed scholarships.
Since the school was built, the San Gabriel Valley has endured many heat waves that have caused our students and
teachers to endure scorching temperatures. Our auditorium has been in need of air conditioning for many years. We are
excited to share, that through your donations, we have been able to install an air conditioning system in the
auditorium. We welcome all of you to stop by one of our school events, such as Casino Night or the Scholarship
Benefit Luncheon, to enjoy the improvements of the school.
This fall we will launch a new campaign to continue to improve SGMHS. It is only through your generosity that we can
continue to polish the hidden jewel that the San Gabriel Mission High School is in Southern California.
For questions regarding how to share a gift with San Gabriel Mission High School, please contact Mrs. Rocio M. Pineda
at (626) 282-3181 ext. 116 or email at [email protected]. All donations are tax deductible.
We are grateful for your support. May God bless you.

“Through the Dominican and
Claretian charism, we teach our
young women to go out in the
community and serve. I believe
giving back to Mission is my
way to serve our students. The
amazing young women that
come out of these doors truly
are worth the investment!” -Ms. Sallo, Principal

“I am grateful to my parents for
enrolling me in San Gabriel
Mission High School. I could not
have been more blessed by the
education, experiences, and
friendships that I hold precious to
this day. It is with great honor that I
was able to give back to my Mission

most worthy of this recognition.

Building motivated young women in the integral to the Mission culture. We are
dedicated to the continual improvement of the students experience at SGMHS, our pro-
gram and facilities. Students are encouraged and have the opportunity to learn the skills
needed to become good citizens. Every year the students of SGMHS contribute over
10,000 hours of community service. When donors like you share gifts to enhance their
learning and improve their school, they become inspired to become stewards of giving
and share their time and talents with the communities in which they reside.
In a constantly changing world, Mission also understands the need to prepare its
students to use technology for digital citizenship. SGMHS has incorporated smart
technology into their learning to cultivate their skills for the innovations of the work
force to come.
When you invest in education, you are investing in the possible future employees of
your company, the athletes you will see on television, or the teachers of your children.
Every gift shared is a gift that will never lose its value, because contributing your re-
sources to the youth and to education is truly priceless.
To share a gift today contact Mrs. Rocio M. Pineda at [email protected] or
call (626) 282-3181 ext. 116.
We would greatly appreciate it if you share a gift with us during the holiday season to
grant more students the experience of a quality Catholic education through our Annual
Fund. You can share a gift with us through our website at WWW.SGMHS.ORG.
Stay tuned for the hashtag #GivingTuesday and give someone an extra reason to
be thankful for this November during Thanksgiving!

“Every teacher Emma had her sophomore year was inspiring, from Ms. Bueno and Ms. Myer to Ms. Sallo. Each of these teachers is a subject matter expert (many have received double majors and are furthering their studies!) and as women, they are each incredible role models, showing our girls that there truly is no limit to what can be done with discipline and grace in equal measure.”
