Purpose Of Mission The California Indians who joined themission were called neophytes. onceneophytes are apart of the mission, they barenot allowed to leave. In older missions, theyrealized if they let the neophytes leave theywill return to their old ways, lose theirclothing, and forget what they learned at themission. But at the mission, the neophyteshad little chance to practice their old ways .They were forced to do what the people ofthe church said. This included working,praying, and lessons. The missions were usedto convert Indians to Catholicism.

Indians of San GabrielThe Indian that lived near San Gabriel are theChumash and the Tongva. They believed they

were created from the land. So they gavemany thanks to their creat flutes and rattles.

When they were doing rituals and ceremoniesthey played carved flutes and rattles. They also

dances and sang songs. The Indian men hadanother ritual, as sweet ledges. Sweat ledges

were mud huts built near the river The men satinside the sweat ledges by a hat fire until they

dripped with sweat. They would jump in theriver and cleanse themselves. In the winter

they would keep warm with blankets and capesthey made form feathers, rabbit fur, or sea

other skin. The villagers of the Indians wouldcarve bowls pipes and breads from a soft rock

called steatite.
