Celebrate Small Business

Page 2: San Francisco Small Business Week 2015 Program

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I invite you to join me in celebrating the 11th Annual San Francisco Small Business Week. This year, “Celebrating Small Business,” will honor and recognize the diverse contributions from all of our small businesses.

I am so proud to dedicate this week in honor of the thousands of small businesses that drive our economy, create local jobs, innovate and inspire our communities. These small businesses anchor our diverse neighborhoods and shape the character of our world class city. It is their success that defines the heart and soul of our City. That’s why I continue to invest in services and programs that ensure our businesses start, stay, and grow right here in San Francisco.

We’ve established a variety of services and programs to help businesses navigate the challenges and complexities of opening and operating a business in the City. Through my Invest in Neighborhoods initiative, we effectively coordinate city resources – technical assistance, access to capital, façade improvements, neighborhood improvement grants and loans - to best serve the needs of small businesses and the environments where they will thrive. We’ve recently launched the Small Business Portal, a comprehensive online hub to best guide a small business’ engagement with City agencies as they seek to start, maintain and grow their business. Since its launch, more than 16,000 users have visited businessportal.sfgov.org to learn more about how to transform a great idea into a successful business. As the Portal receives numerous accolades,

we continue to improve and expand the portal to best meet the needs of our small businesses.

We’ve also expanded and strengthened our support for small business through improved permitting, assistance with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, assistance with rapid recovery after a disaster, and new marketing campaigns to encourage the promotion of our buy local campaign.

Together, these programs, are helping our small businesses succeed, but we must do more. I will continue to support the growth and development of our small businesses

Our Small Business Committee has lined up an exciting week of events and activities from May 16-22. It is my hope you will take advantage of the organized events, webinars and workshops, and networking opportunities that are available. Join me in celebrating San Francisco Small Business Week 2015. Let’s celebrate small businesses this week and every week!

Edwin M. LeeMayor, City and County of San Francisco

Greetings from the Mayor of San Francisco

Congratulations to our small business winners today! We are proud of your success. Your vision, courage and persistence are a valuable contribution to the health of our nation’s economy, as two out of every three net new jobs come from small businesses such as yours. We have been honored to support you as you have grown and prospered and we salute your accomplishments.

We at the SBA are dedicated to your continued success as we assist you to even greater heights. We are here to help others like yourselves who dream of starting a business of their own or who desire to expand and grow. We have reached record lending and contracting goals this year, and are focused on helping small businesses participate in the tremendous trade and exporting opportunities. As we reach out to all aspiring small business owners, especially to our veterans, women and underserved communities, your accomplishments will inspire them to reach their goals.

I’m pleased to share this celebration with you and to support your expert and dedicated San Francisco SBA team of professionals, as they are committed to your success. So, continue to boldly create, innovate, and soar. We will be your most enthusiastic champions.

Our special thanks to our generous sponsors and their support of the small businesses in our communities. We know that when small business wins, America wins. You make this nation great. Kind regards,

Donna J. DavisRegional Administrator(Serving Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii and Nevada)U.S. Small Business Administration

Greetings from Donna J. Davis, Regional Administrator

Bank of America is honored once again to be the presenting sponsor for the 11th annual San Francisco Small Business Week. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses are responsible for nearly 2/3 of new job creation in the country. The entrepreneurial spirit and innovative mindset required to create and grow small business is certainly alive and well in the Bay Area, and we are honored to participate in this celebration. Bank of America has a more than 100-year history in California. A. P. Giannini opened the doors of the Bank of Italy in San Francisco in 1904 before changing its name to Bank of America in 1930. In the past, we’ve funded major projects like the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. More recently, we helped build AT&T Park and financed the renovation of the Ferry Building. This heritage of commitment lives on through our philanthropic efforts and the work we do every day to help small business owners grow and succeed. We continue to offer a variety of ways to provide more capital and local expertise to small businesses across the state. In 2014, Bank of America extended nearly $4.5 billion in credit to small businesses in California. Bank of America is also the largest investor in Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), with more

than $1.3 billion in investments to more than 240 CDFI partners throughout the nation. CDFIs provide affordable loans, technical assistance and other resources that may not be accessible through more traditional channels. In addition, there are more than 350 dedicated Bank of America small business bankers throughout California. Having a dedicated group of small business bankers means customers will have convenient access to local specialists who can provide guidance and insights to help them understand the marketplace and make better decisions for their businesses. We are proud to serve as a sponsor and look forward to another great San Francisco Small Business Week. Whether you are attending Flavors of San Francisco, the Small Business Week Conference, or the various mixers and receptions happening all around this great city during this week’s celebration, we hope you enjoy the opportunities to learn and connect with others who can help you further the goals you have for your company. You make the Bay Area what it is…thank you!

At Laughing Monk, we believe that brewing, like beer, is a living thing that is constantly changing by embracing both classic tradition and new technique. Lagunitas1280 N. McDowell Boulevard, Petalumalagunitas.com

From our earliest days of striving to make consistently good beer, and instead making beer that ranged from vile, to barely drinkable, to wonderful, to elegant, to questionable-at-best. From being castigated by our West Marin neighbors to finally suffering an ‘eviction’ by our West Marin septic system. From landing in the welcoming arms of Petaluma, and actually getting our beer into bottles, onto the streets, and into the hands of sympathetic beer geeks, to steadily losing less money each month. From all this and more, Lagunitas Brewing Company is emerging as a battle-tested brewery capable of making great beer out of goat’s milk, brambles, and asphalt on the surface of the Moon, if need be.
