No doubt, if I was spending a week here, I'd besupporting these local attractions over the larger onesAnd I'd save a pretty penny in the process! I might havegot there myself with some hard research, but I'd ratherlet the insiders show me so I have more time to relax!

I was last in San Diego around 15 years ago with mywife. We specically headed to the area beachesbecause of the well publicized fantastic weather - 263days of sunny or partly cloudy days last year!

Like most people who visit the area, we went to thepopular places like SeaWorld and Balboa Park. But wedidn't have an insider at our side who could steer us tothe lesser known (but probably more enjoyable for it)local spots!

Cue the team at Mission Sands. George and Je havebeen a pleasure to work with, opening my eyes to theother side of San Diego's beaches. Although they arefocused on the Mission Beach area, their knowledgegoes well beyond.

    5 EXPERIENCES YOU CANNOT MISS...

A beautiful setting for snorkeling, diving and watching the sea lions. Itis around 6 miles north of Mission Beach in a protected marine refugearea. Marvel at the spectacular marine life including rays, Yellowtails, maybe even a leopard shark! You can actually walk down onto the beachwith the sea lions and swim/kayak/scuba dive with them in the water. They are very friendly and curious and will swim right next to you!

You would be crazy to miss the opportunity to sh the waters aroundSan Diego. Depending on the time of year and the length of trip, you cancatch Yellowtail, Barracuda, Bass, Bluen and Dorado to name a few! We'd suggest Seaforth who oer a wide range of charters for dierentability levels and prices. A half day trip is popular with families andbeginners. But they do fuller trips and even an overnight trip!

This is such a great place, genuinely with something for all ages. You willnot want to miss the super cool wave rides - FlowRiderand FlowBarrel- you must check out the videos on those links. Awesome. If you loverides, you should try the Big Dipper, Vertical Plunge, Beach Blaster andmore - check this linkfor all the rides. There is so muchmore to do thanthis - good eating, an athletic club and more. More on their website.

    La Jolla Cove...

    Charter Fishing...

    Belmont Park...

San Diego Boat Tour...This is a great way to see some of the areas historic sites like the Star ofIndia and Cabrillo National Monument. And along the way you'll havethe opportunity for wildlife watching. The Bahia Belleis a more grownup option - it's a sternwheeler style ship that runs cocktail cruises. If youare looking for a daytime family style trip then you might opt for theHornblower.

Sunset Cliffs...Undoubtedly the premier location to watch a sunset. You MUST go! Theclis sit above the ocean, right over some of the best surf spots in thecounty. There are a few locations to climb down onto the rocks belowand watch the surf crash into the clis. Located south of Mission Beachnear Point Loma, so stop o on your way back from Point Loma beachand the Cabrillo Monument. It's a remarkable view to end the day.

Del Mar...Del Mar is the northern most of all the beacheslisted here. Around 2 miles in length it hasdierent sections of beach depending on whoyou're with and what you'd

like to do. Around Powerhouseand Seagrove Parks you'll nda beach good for swimming andfamilies. To the south you'll ndterrain more suited to exploringbeautiful clis, leading eventuallyto Torrey Pines, the world famousgolf course.

Pacific Beach...Located just north of Mission Beach, this is the

cool place, attracting the younger crowd. Butdon't be put o if you are looking for something

family oriented. The beach is good

for sand castles and swimming andyou can try activities like kayakingfrom the beach. In addition there is

a 3 mile long boardwalk to peoplewatch, with plenty of good family

friendly restaurants. And alongGarnet Ave is a farmers market

    every Tuesday

    THE SURROUNDING BEACHES...

    Ocean Beach...

South of Mission Beach, before youreach Point Loma, you'll nd OceanBeach. It's usually a little less crowdedthan other beaches. Street fairs aretypical, and there's also a farmersmarketevery Wednesday between

4-9pm. You can't miss (so don't!) thenearly 2,000 foot long pier. It's 2nd inlength on the West Coast to Santa Cruz's pier. And, if you like tide pools, there are some goodopportunities around the pier.

    Point Loma...

Located about 15 minutes south ofMission Beach, this isn't a swimmingbeach. But we do love the tide pools

here. Grab the kids and see whatyou can spot at low tide. You should

see the usual tide pool favorites

of anemones and crabs. Whilstyou're down that way you should

continue on to the Cabrillo NationalMonumentfor some history. And

don't forget to stop by Sunset Clison the way back for that sunset

    experience not to miss!

The park was just bought by SeaWorld. But don't let the big name brandput you o, Aquaticais great! Previously called Knott's Waterpark, soit's been around for a while. There are rides for all ages, and a hugewavepool which is always fun. It's south east of downtown San Diego, roughly 30 mins driveby car from the beaches.

    Aquatica Waterpark...1

Located in Balboa Park, very close to the beaches, the museumhasthe largest model railroad display in the world at 28,000 square feet!Although it isn't a highly interactive museum, it does have manyinteresting features, a great history of our railroads and, of course, the huge model, which all combine to make it a special place.

    Model Railroad Museum...2

The New Children's Museum is located in downtown San Diego,

so you could combine it with a wider city day. This isn't a typicalart museum. It's mantra is "think, play, create", the idea being toencourage kids to touch and interact with the art, in a way thatpromotes learning in a fun, creative way.

    MISSION SANDS'S TIPS FORTHE KIDS...

Or hike one of ourmany trails...

Secret Sea Cave...If you do head over to the CabrilloNational Monument then don'tmiss the secret cave. It's onlyaccessible at low tide (so pleaseplan properly!!). Refer to thiswebsite for some very detaileddirections as well as some wisewords of advice. This one is forthe curious and adventurous butwell worth it!

Potato Chip Rock...Yes there really is a rock that lookslike a potato chip! Have a look atthis picture - hard to believe youcan stand on it! This websitehasa good amount of informationabout how to get there, what toexpect and what to bring with you- but make sure water is top of thelist as it's around an 8 mile round-trip and can get very hot.

Torrey Pines...The area of Torrey Pines has somegreat hikes. For a full list refer totheir websitewhere you can alsopick up some trail maps. We likethe Broken Hill trail, particularlythe Broker Hill Overlook whichhas a great view. This websitehassome comments from previoushikers which are useful, especiallythe parking.

If you'revisiting more than one attraction then you should lookinto the 3-For-1 Passor the GO San Diego Card. The latter gets youin to 45 of the best San Diego attractions, including some of our

favorites for the kids, listed below...

[May not be suitable for younger kids. Please check the websites and make your own call!]
