    the Adams Avenue Business Association’s signature

    events, which highlights the businesses on Adams

    Avenue and celebrates the diverse cultural roots of the

    residents and merchants in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego.

    Through hosting events such as this we can share our community with you. While you are here,

    please notice the quaint shops and historic beauty that we are so proud of. We hope that during your

    visit to the Roots Festival, you are enticed to return to sample our merchant offerings — from fine foods

    to ethnic heritage crafts, our community of enterprises has everything to offer. We expect that you’ll

    Special events, such as the Roots Festival, and all of AABA’s activities are carried out by the Board of

    Supervisory District County Supervisor Ron Roberts as a long time supporter of our festivals and the small

    business community, particularly through his leadership in the City County Reinvestment Task Force.

    33RD ANNUAL ADAMS AVENUEROOTS FESTIVAL

    Iwant to apologize to a number of fine rootsmusicians, both local and from around thecountry, who are not on the list of perform-ers this year. This is not because I didn’t want

    them to be, but rather because the final decision

    about who got hired was taken out of my hands

    and, in my opinion, some of those who were

    asked to play are simply not roots musicians. So

    there will be no Hank Bradley, Frannie Leopold,

    and Cathie Whitesides (Balkan Cafe Orchestra);

    no Kenny Hall; no Mary McCaslin; no John

    Bosley, Walt Richards, and Paula Strong; no Joe

    Hickerson, Carol Elizabeth Jones, and Laurel

    Bliss; and no Golden Hill Ramblers. Now, part

    of the reason for this is budgets. We don’t have

    the money that we had in the past, and efforts

    to bring outside money in to support this festi-

    val have been less than successful to date.

    The answer, however, isn’t to water down

    the reputation of this festival by booking artists

    whose music falls outside the scope of what it is

    trying to be — or at least what I have tried to

    make it these last 40 years. If you want to expe-

    rience more authentic roots music at this festi-

    val, I encourage you to contact the Adams

    Avenue Business Association and get involved

    during the planning stages.

    We did succeed in booking a few good roots

    artists this year, and I encourage you to attend

    and whoop up audiences for Delmer Holland

    and the Blue Creek Ramblers, Kathy Larisch and

    Carol McComb, Carol Ponder, Carolyn Hester,

    and our local traditional and old timey groups

    like Curt Bouterse, the New Lost Melody Boys,

    Robin Henkel, Tomcat Courtney, Tanya Rose

    and the Buffalo Chip Kickers, Gregory Page,

    Wayne Brandon and Clark Powell, Siamsa Gael

    Ceili, Martin Henry, Los Alacranes, and the

    Monroe Avenue String Band.

    This is a special anniversary for me. I started

    working on festivals in 1967 when we put on

    the first one, and this one makes number 33.

    I’ve also worked on 13 of the Adams Avenue

    Street Fairs and four blues festivals (1973, 1979,

    1980, 1994). So, that makes this one number

    50. In a way, I was hoping that as an anniver-

    sary for me, we could have booked musicians

    who I consider more authentic roots artists.

    Instead, I had to write letters and tell my good

    friends and fine musicians that we couldn’t

    afford to bring them down this year. I hope that

    next year I won’t have to do that again.

    I’d like to see more roots music-oriented

    people who are willing to get involved in the

    initial Roots Festival committee meetings, partic-

    ularly those of you who live in the Adams

    Avenue neighborhood. I feel that I still have a

    lot to contribute, though, and I still think that

    this music is in need of support. I won’t let it

    die because there’s no one giving people the

    opportunity to hear it. I’ve lived close to the

    poverty level for 40 years because of my

    involvement with this music (I should say these

    musics) and at least 90 percent of that music

    has been worth hearing and worth presenting.

    I’ve seldom taken any money for doing what I

    do except for the publicity it’s given my busi-

    ness. What I have taken from this work is

    knowledge about the various kinds of roots

    music, knowledge that I can give back in vari-

    ous ways to help further support of the music.

    Plus, it’s been a hell of a lot of fun, and I don’t

    regret any of that.

    Another way you can get involved is to join

    Wayne Brandon, Clark Powell, and myself in the

    work we are doing as part of the San Diego

    Folklife Project. Along with the goal of establish-

    ing a folklife museum in San Diego (perhaps in

    Balboa Park), it is an effort to raise money so

    that we can hire the roots musicians we’ve never

    been able to afford to play at the Adams Avenue

    Roots Festival. Drop by their booth at the Roots

    Festival and talk to them about it. Or drop by

    Folk Arts Rare Records and talk to me.

    P.S. Dr. Charles Wolfe, a generous contributor

    and information resource for many of these fes-

    tivals over the past 30 years or so, writer of vital

    books and liner notes for CD reissues too

    numerous to count, passed away a few weeks

    ago. Even though he was seriously ill, he took

    the time to make recommendations for this

    year’s festival. Thanks, Charlie. The old-time

    music community will miss you.

    T his year’s Adams Avenue Roots andFolk Festival honors Eduardo “Lalo”Guerrero, an alumnus of the 1997festival, by portraying a youthful image of himon the Roots Festival poster. The late Latinocomposer and performer, acknowledged bymany as the Father of Chicano Music, enjoyeda long and colorful career that lasted morethan 60 years.

    His first group, a quartet called LosCarlistas, was notable for representing Arizonaat the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Soonthereafter, he moved to Southern California tofurther his musical pursuits. During the 1940she recorded and performed as a soloist as wellas with the Trio Imperial. He also madeuncredited appearances in a number ofmovies, including Boots and Saddles with GeneAutry and His Kind of Woman, starring RobertMitchum and Jane Russell. In the decade thatfollowed, he formed an orchestra that touredthe Southwest. His audience at Hollywood’s LaBamba club included some of the biggeststars of the day. His national hit, “PanchoLopez,” enabled him to buy his own club dur-ing the 1960s. Dubbed Lalo’s, it provided avenue where his orchestra could perform on aregular basis. The club was sold in 1972 whenGuerrero moved to Palm Springs.

    Guerrero incorporated many musicalforms into his songs. Even the most cursoryperusal of his catalog reveals his mastery notonly of Latin styles but also of American musicsuch as jump, swing, boogie-woogie, andblues. Some of his songs have a traditionalmariachi sound while others were written andarranged with the sound of a big band orches-tra firmly in mind. Often, the two worldswould merge in a vibrant fusion of sounds.One Mexican musician quipped that Lalo was“the first Chicano to cross back!”

    True to his dual heritage as an American ofMexican descent, Guerrero wrote lyrics inboth Spanish and English, sometimes switch-ing back and forth between the two withinthe same song. Many of his songs chronicledthe Chicano experience, garnering praise fromCesar Chavez, with whom he worked for farmworkers’ rights. He also displayed a sharp witwith such song parodies as “Pancho Lopez,” aLatin-themed re-working of “The Ballad ofDavy Crockett,” “Pancho Claus,” “Elvis Perez,”“Tacos for Two” (set to the tune of “CocktailsFor Two”), and “There’s No Tortillas” (to thetune of “O Sole Mio”). They can be found on

    the CD The Funny Side of Lalo Guerrero. Throughout his career Guerrero enjoyed a

    respectable amount of recognition and acco-lades. His earliest Pachuco compositions pro-vided the soundtrack to Luis Valdez’ 1970sstage musical turned film Zoot Suit. In 1980the Smithsonian Institution declared him to bea National Folk Treasure and in 1992, hereceived the National Heritage Award from theNEA. In 1997 President Bill Clinton awardedhim with the Presidential Medal of the Arts.

    His final CD in 1999, Vamos a Bailar OtraVez, features a big band that includes mem-bers of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. This releasecontains new versions of his greatest songs,including “Vamos a Bailar,” “MarihuanaBoogie,” “Nunca Jamas,” and “Barrio Viejo.”Guerrero continued to perform well into his80s. In November of 2004, he gave his finalperformance in his hometown of Tucson withMariachi Cobre a mere five months beforepassing away at the age of 88.

    Lalo Guerrero’s legacy of music andaccomplishments will influence generations tocome and in order to ensure this, his sonsMark and Dan have donated his archives tothe California Ethnic Multicultural Archives(CEMA) at UC Santa Barbara.

    A Cappella Mountain Ballads

    Carol PonderAppalachian born and bred, Carol

    Ponder is a talented musician, actress,and educator who is known for singing inthe old unaccompanied mountain style.Although a cappella balladry is at theheart of her music, she also accompaniesherself on guitar, autoharp, and spoons.Ponder is interested not only in preserv-ing traditions but also in keeping themrelevant in the 21st century, so when sheis performing or recording, she sings ablend of old and new songs. MostlyPonder hopes to invite others to exploretheir own heritage and inspire them toembrace music and singing as theirhuman birthright.

    During the 1980s, Ponder discoveredthe profession of “teaching artist,” a pro-fessional artist who also works in educa-tion settings. Since then she has workedwith teachers in hundreds of classroomsto create rich, engaging, arts-integratedstudy through music and theater.

    Ponder has performed at the Berea,Kentucky Traditional Music Festival and inWashington D.C. plus a variety of otherfestivals throughout the South. This isher first time performing at the AdamsAvenue Roots and Folk Festival.

    Songs for Social Justice and Human Rights

    Anne FeeneyBased in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,

    Anne Feeney is the granddaughter of anintrepid mine workers’ organizer, whoalso used music to carry the message ofsolidarity to working people. After twodecades of community activism andregional performances at rallies, Feeneytook her message on the road. Since1991 she has traveled to the frontlines in40 states, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, andSweden.

    Her anthem “Have You Been to Jailfor Justice?” is being performed by Peter,Paul and Mary. Dubbed the “minister ofculture” to the movements for economicand social justice and human rights,Feeney is “the best labor singer in NorthAmerica,” according to Utah Phillips. Theway she says it is this: “If you’re onstrike, or in an organizing drive, or doingcommunity organizing for women’srights, the environment, human rights,anti-poverty or anti-racist work, I want tobe there.”

    Traditional Old Time String Band

    Delmer Holland andthe Blue CreekRamblers

    This group has an authentic soundthat was born more than 50 years agowhen Delmer and Leland Holland grew upplaying music on neighboring farms bor-dered by Blue Creek near Waverly,Tennessee. As teens, the first cousinsoften played with the great old time fid-dler and Grand Ole Opry entertainerArthur Smith.

    Today string bassist William Moore,and 2004 state of Tennessee old timebanjo champion 19-year-old RebekahWeiler complete the band. The Blue CreekRamblers have won old time string bandchampionships in both Kentucky andTennessee. Noted authority Dr. CharlesWolfe called them “one of the last surviv-ing authentic Tennessee string bands thatcall up echoes of barn dances andsorghum stir offs. They play with such adrive and spirit on tunes rarely heardtoday that if Uncle Dave Macon couldhave heard them, he would have shouted‘hot dog’ and grabbed his banjo to joinin.” Their CD, Keeping the Tradition Alive,will be available at their Roots Festivalperformances.

    Traditional and Original Folk Music

    Kathy Larisch andCarol McComb

    Kathy and Carol helped organize andplayed at the first two Roots Festivals in1967-1968, then known as the San DiegoFolk Festival. At that time they had a best-selling recording on the Elektra label and,being from the San Diego area, they werein constant demand throughout the stateto open for such acts as the New LostCity Ramblers and Bill Monroe. They hadplayed at the Newport Folk Festival in1965 and seemed to be on their way to asolid career together as a duo. However,things got disarrayed and by the end ofthe 1960s, Kathy decided to pursue amaster of arts degree in the SanFrancisco area. Carol has continued to bean active performer and recording artistto the present day.

    Although these two, who startedsinging together while they were highschool students in Vista, continued tosing together informally, it’s only recentlythat they have begun to perform togetheragain. Their unique blending of autoharpand guitar on old ballads, Carter familysongs, and original tunes were unique inthe 1960s and they still are today.

    Southwestern-flavored Originals and FavoriteFolk Songs

    Carolyn HesterCarolyn Hester is an original —one of

    the small but determined gang of ragtag,early 1960s folk singers who cruised thecoffee shops and campuses from HarvardYard to Bleeker Street, convinced thattheir music could help change the world.

    The political and musical offspring ofPete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and theWeavers, performers such as Hester, BobDylan, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, andRichard Fariña (to name a few) wereamong the vanguard of the new music ofthe 1960s, the first surging energy of awave that would eventually engulf a gen-eration of American youth.

    To this day, Hester remains a dynamicforce with a repertoire of Southwestern-flavored originals and long-standingfavorites. In addition to her own record-ings, she has lent her vocals to NancyGriffith’s award-winning CD OtherVoices/Other Rooms and has performedat various folk festivals across the coun-try and overseas.

    Ross Altman A self-described“singer-songfight-er,” Ross Altmankeeps up with thetimes with topicalsongs that reflectthe great traditionsof the genre popu-

    larized by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger,Phil Ochs, and Tom Paxton. Altman hasbeen a regular at the Adams Avenue RootsFestival as well as other SouthernCalifornian folk venues for years.

    Cindy Lee BerryhillCindy Lee Berryhillis an acousticsinger-songwriter, agrassroots cultheroine, and a wise-cracking lyricist, allrolled into one, saidthe Union-Tribune’sChris Nixon. Asunconventional and

    inspired as any performer in America, shespearheaded the influential anti-folkmovement in New York City in the late1980s and has released albums on labelsbig (Rhino/Capitol) and small(Griffith ParkRecords). She will be joined by percus-sionist extraordinaire Randy Hoffman andbassist vocalist Marcia Claire.

    Appalachian Folk Songs

    less banjo, hammered dulcimer, autoharp,plucked dulcimer, and Vietnamese mouthharp (upon which he plays Southernmountain dance tunes) are his specialties.

    Roy Acuff Songs

    Wayne Brandon andClark Powell Wayne Brandon, the western world’sbiggest Roy Acuff fan, sings Acuff songsabout as well as anyone except for Acuffhimself. Clark Powell, who plays guitar andfive-string banjo, also lends his BashfulBrother Oswald-sounding dobro steel gui-tar to give this duo its unique flavor.

    For more than adecade, SanDiego-based LosCalifornios havebeen researchingand interpretingthe music of

    Spanish and Mexican California, focusingon the nineteenth century and the dayswhen California was part of Spain andthen Mexico. This sweet, melodic musicwas played for dancing and singing atfestive gatherings hosted by the Spanishand Mexican settlers or Californios, whoran cattle on huge ranchos during theirheyday in the 1830s and 1840s. Workingfrom primary sources, includingCalifornio testimonials, travellers’accounts, and the early sound recordingsof Spanish-speaking Californians made byCharles Fletcher Lummis almost a centuryago, the group endeavors to recreate thesound of serenade and fandango from thedays before California became a state.

    Jocelyn Celaya Although she isonly 22 years old,Jocelyn Celayahas traveled theworld performingmusic thatencompassesmany styles.Originally from

    Piedmont, Oklahoma, and currently resid-ing in San Diego, Celaya first picked upher father’s guitar at the age of 14 andbegan teaching herself to play. Her familywas strapped financially so Celaya playedpublicly to earn money to help out. Herperforming was so well received that shewas soon able to afford lessons withacclaimed guitarist Edgar Cruz. She alsostudied flamenco, finger picking, andclassical guitar, as well as authenticGregorian chants. At 15 she was perform-ing in Oklahoma coffee houses. Her firstsolo album, Mosaic Jungle, was recordedin 2001 and features classical composi-tions and flamenco as well as originalsongs. Celaya’s audience has included theQueen of England’s royal entourage. Thispast January she was one of the youngestguitarists to be awarded and honored as aLifetime Honoree Member of theAssociation of Finger Style Guitarists.

    Patty HallPatty Hall beganher musicalcareer as ateenager whenshe won ticketsto the 1963Berkeley FolkFestival fromradio stationKPFA. That expe-rience changed

    everything, prompting Hall to teach her-self to play the banjo, guitar, and auto-harp. She soon began writing and per-forming her own songs and eventuallyenrolled in the folklore graduate programat UCLA. After earning her degree, shemoved to Nashville to work at the CountryMusic Hall of Fame, where she taughtbanjo workshops, hosted women’s song-writing seminars, produced historicalcountry music recordings, and continuedwriting and performing.

    Merging her musical interests with herscholarly pursuits, Hall’s music blends itall together in a fusion of old-timey tunes,funky girl blues, upbeat kids’ songs, andtopical ballads, spiked with a little com-mentary and lots of good humor.

    Martin Henry Martin Henry is an excellent folk-countrysinger-guitarist-fiddler who was a nearregular at these festivals back in the1970s. Having come to San Diego in thelate 1960s with the Navy, he stayedaround to become a mainstay of thegroup of excellent musicians (that includ-ed Tom Waits and Ray Bierl) who gottheir start at the old Heritage coffeehousein Mission Beach. Henry played at theSan Diego Folk Festivals from 1969through 1987. He currently works at theOld Globe Theatre in Balboa Park and hasrecently become active in music again.

    Gypsy Jazz

    Hot Club of San Diego

    Formed in 1998 by French guitaristsPatrick Berrogain and Alain Cola, Hot Clubof San Diego perpetuates the tradition ofjazz manouche or Gypsy Jazz, and is theonly band of its kind in San Diego. Afterhearing this infectious music it is easy tounderstand why this style is growing inpopularity here and abroad. As one writer

    aptly wrote, “It is the music I hear in myhappiest dreams.”

    Drawing from the spirited repertoire oflegendary Gypsy Jazz guitarist DjangoReinhardt, as well as timeless standardsand original compositions, Hot Club ofSan Diego performs regularly in SouthernCalifornia as a trio as well as a quartetusing violin or accordion.

    Lora’s repertoire consists of folk musicfrom a variety of regions of Norway. Sheperforms both in concert and for dancersat Balboa Park’s House of Norway events,Sons of Norway lodges, and ethnicNorwegian weddings. Lora plays withKriss Larson’s eight-piece ScandiaGammaldans Band for Scandinaviandance parties in Orange County. She is acharter member of the Hardanger FiddleAssociation of America, and encouragesinterest in the Hardanger fiddle wherevershe goes.

    The Monroe Avenue String Band is anold-time string band that plays mostly

ChrisClarke, originally from east Virginia andinfluenced by area musicians who playedtraditional music and country blues, leadsthe group on mandolin, guitar, andassorted gizmos. Sarah on fiddle, feet,and vino, and Darren on guitar, mandolin,and spirits round out the group.

As the years passed,Page not only worked on his own projectsbut also began to work with an eclecticarray of artists, including Jason Mraz,John Doe, Jewel, Tom Brosseau, StevePoltz, and A.J. Croce. His collaborationand friendship with Croce enticed him tojoin Croce’s label Seedling Records and torelease his debut CD, Love Made MeDrunk. It is a rare gift to be able to con-vey the emotional depth that Page hasdelivered on his newest album and thereis an indescribable sense when listeningto his music that you have uncovered asecret.

    Angela Patuá Afro-Brazilianfolksinger, gui-tarist, and percus-sionist AngelaPatuá got involvedin show businessin the mid-’70swhile working fora circus company

    called Circo Real de Bengala. Moving toRio de Janeiro in 1986 to pursue an act-ing career, Patuá also sang backup forCaruza and Flavio Venturine, among otherlocal artists. In 1991, Angela Patuámoved to the U.S., touring New Orleans’club scene, and moving to Miami in 1995.Singing in different Brazilian nativedialects, Portuguese and English, Patuá’sdebut recording, Brasil Bantu, wasreleased by independent label Out There.In 1999, readers of Miami’s New Timesvoted her Best Latin Singer. In 2001, herEP The Force of the Sun was released.

    Portuguese MandolinDuoThe Portuguese Mandolin Duo’s reper-toire consists of ballads, fados, and folk-lore of Portugal. Sal Freitas, who beganplaying mandolin as a child 67 years ago,has performed in Portugal, Mexico, andCanada and is also a member of a jazzand folklore group that performs at anannual festival in Massachusetts. Freitasis also a member of the San DiegoOrchestra Ensemble and a longtime mem-ber of the San Diego Mandolin Orchestra.Paul DaRosa is a proficient player ofacoustic, lead, and bass guitar. His othergigs have included playing lead guitar for“Os Navigadores” and playing acousticguitar for “Ze Duarte” while touringEurope when he was just a teenager. ThePortuguese Mandolin Duo also performsfor a variety of functions in thePortuguese community of Point Loma,including the week-long observance ofthe Holy Ghost Feast.

    Old Time Hillbilly Music

    Since beingdragged out ofretirement in theyear 2000 by LouCurtiss, TanyaRose has donemany solo gigs atthe RootsFestivals, butthese days likes

    playing with the full sound of a band. Aveteran of the coffeehouse scene duringthe “Great Folk Scare” of the 1960s, Roserounded up a few friends from those daysfor the current version of the ChipKickers. The group plays a diverse brandof old time hillbilly music, including1940s’ honky tonk and country musicbefore the invention of bluegrass.

    Clark Powell provides the instrumentaldirection to this group with his soulfulDobro style, fashioned after the lateBashful Brother Oswald, the man whogave Roy Acuff’s band its unique sound inthe 1930s and 1940s. Powell has beenplaying in local country bands for 40years and backed up Rose at a live KSONradio broadcast of Wayne Rice’sBluegrass Anniversary Show in 2004.Rose’s husband, Larry, played mandolinon that show and has played in all of hiswife’s bands since they were married 38years ago. Bob Pearson is a veteran ofthe New Smokies and has been playingwith the Roses for several years on bothguitar and bass in a local bluegrass band.

    With his latest album, Down theRoad, Allen Singer finally, and single-handedly, disproves the old belief thatthose who can’t do teach. As a skilledmusician and torch carrier of folk her-itage Singer masters both.

    A San Diego local, Singer, in addi-tion to keeping the spirit of musicalive through his recordings, alsoserves on the board of the San DiegoFolk Heritage, a concert-producingorganization. If that weren’t enough,he also leads the San Diego Folk SongSociety, created in 1957 by localtreasure Sam Hinton, a greatAmerican folksinger, folklorist, anddiatonic harmonica player.

    A collection of cover songs andoriginal material, Down the Roadincludes classics by legends WoodyGuthrie, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan.Tucked in between are three ofSinger’s original songs. Perhaps oneof the best ways to describe the valid-ity of this body of work is to say thatit’d be difficult for the untrained earto differentiate which tracks areSinger’s originals and which are cov-ers of world renowned classics.

    According to his bio, Singer playsguitar and sings folk, blues, country,traditional music, old time tunes, top-ical, and bluegrass music, and has aknack for picking the best songs toaccentuate his strong, dusty voice. Inthe same way Tom Waits spits out hisvocals and lobs them at you like emo-tion-filled bombs, Singer, too, hasharnessed the ability to let his deep,at times raspy, weathered voice landfirmly in the hearts of his listenersthrough their ears.

    Devoid of self-conscious hesitationon Singer’s cover of Alton and RabonDelmore’s “Deep River Blues,” he letsall his vocal imperfections hang out.Like a good faux finish, it addsauthenticity and impressive detail tothe composition. A cover of HarlanHoward’s “Busted” incorporates a lit-tle twang with the songs’ old time,grassroots foundation. “Stealing,” aSinger original, is one of thoseauthentic, “o’, my darlin’’’ kind oftunes that you’d swear you’ve heardsomewhere before. Its tempo remindsme of a galloping horse, setting a realwestern, chewin’ tobaccy mood forits listeners.

    A description of the album onSinger’s website says “[it] takes youon a journey through American 20thcentury folk music, country blues, tra-ditional, and early country music…Listen to the songs and the musicthat set off the 1960s’ folk revival.”

    With Down the Road, Singer lightsthe spark for the modern revival.

    ChristopherDeanCeltic Journeyby Kate Kowsh

    If there’s any truth to the old say-ing, “You can tell a lot about a manby the work he does,” thenChristopher Dean is a well-rounded,confident-but-not-flashy man of sub-stance.

    Listening to his third solo album,Celtic Journey is the equivalent oflying in the soft green grass on oneof Scotland’s rolling hills. The musiccommands control of all your sens-es, easing your mind back into acalmer place.

    Complicated, intricate chordpatterns push along every track, andthere’s not a minute left unmas-tered. Dean takes the time to let hisnimble fingers execute each meas-ure delicately. No rush. It’s evidenthe’s not afraid to take all the time heneeds to get it right. As a result, heinstills meaning, clout, and prideinto each song.

    A professional musician for over40 years, Dean spent ten yearsstudying Scottish and Irish musicolo-gy. According to the bio on hisWebsite, it was at the urging andencouragement of friends JimmyKeigher, Donnie MacDonnald,Dougie MacLean, and Edgar Cruzthat he decided to start releasingsolo albums.

    The CD’s opening track is acover of Scottish music legendDougie MacLean’s “Ready for theStorm,” a favorite of Dean’s, whichMacLean wrote in memory of hisgreat, great uncle Fergus, a crofterand fisherman from the Isle of Lewis.

    Track four, “Greensleeves,” is atune that Americans traditionallyassociate with Christmas. Dean takeson this classic and reclaims it as thetraditional English ditty it is.

    Such is also the case with“Scarborough Fair,” a popular clas-sic, made popular by Simon andGarfunkel. In the liner notes Deanwrites that this English folk song hasroots that go as far back as the latemedieval times. Putting his ownstamp on it, Dean accentuates thesong’s more Celtic elements byslowing it down just a touch to givelisteners a chance to soak in thelight finger picking. Even still, hemakes sure to preserve the distinctchord selections that made it suchan exotic classic in the 1960s.

    Even though this is an albumbacked by impressive credentials,with expert production from anartist who obviously did his home-work, what makes it enjoyable to lis-ten to is the beauty of music. Noneof the qualifications matter, just thework. Celtic Journey is all substance.

    ing outstanding female bluegrass artists inSan Diego. March brought Allison Kraussand Union Station to San Diego’s Copley

    Symphony Halldowntown, andApril 23rdbrings ClaireLynch and theClaire LynchBand to the DelMarPowerhouse onthe beach fortwo special con-certs, one at 3

    pm and the second at 5:30 pm, with a wineand cheese reception for attendees of bothconcerts held in between. I highly recom-mend that you don’t miss this rare appear-ance by such a great singer and songwriterand her outstanding band.

    By any measure, the Claire Lynch Band ishigh on the bluegrass world’s A List, withmusicians whose accolades include IBMAFemale Vocalist of the Year and two Grammynominations (Claire); five-time IBMA BassPlayer of the Year awards (Missy Raines);and two-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Yearawards (Jim Hurst).

    Claire’s collaboration with Missy Rainesand Jim Hurst dates back to the days of theFront Porch String Band, resulting in aseasoned sound that is simultaneously unpre-tentious and richly textured. It’s a down-home, front porch sensibility – until you real-ize that it’s a rare front porch, indeed, thathas ever hosted musicians of this caliber. Addto the mix mandolin player David Harvey whobegan touring at age 14 as a member of theRed Allen Band, is a veteran of Larry Sparks’band, and is featured on Larry Cordle’saward-winning Murder on Music Row record-ing, and it’s clear we’re talking about one ofthe greatest bands currently on the scene.

    A Sparkling Fusion of Tenderness andPower

    Claire is justly recognized as “an astonish-ing vocalist who can convey tenderness andpower in the same phrase” (John Hartley Fox)and “one of the most important femaleartists in American music” (Neil Haislop).Dolly Parton credits her with “one of thesweetest, purest, and best lead voices in themusic business today.”

    Claire’s harmonies have graced the record-ings of many stellar contemporaries, fromRalph Stanley to Emmylou Harris. LindaRonstadt cites her “beautiful effervescentvoice,” adding, “I love to listen to her and tosing with her.”

    BIG THINGS COME INSMALL PACKAGES

    As a writer of a column on audio tech-niques and equipment, there areplenty of opportunities for debatewith regard to the topic of one’s “sonic pri-orities”: What’s the best mic to utilize in agiven circumstance? Which preamp shouldyou use (or lust over) and why? Whichmonitors give you the truest picture ofwhat’s actually going on in your recordings?When should we EQ? Compress? Discuss…

    The one thing we can be certain of isthat there are nearly as many “right”answers as there are questions, which is tosay that the recording process is nothing ifnot situational. One can also rest assuredthat whatever equipment we have, it’s goingto have to make do (insert sophomorichumor here). The varied results of this semi-arbitrary mixing and matching is part of thebeauty of the craft. No two recordists (aterm I much prefer over engineers) will cap-ture things exactly the same way, just as notwo producers will contextualize the result-ing tracks in their recordings in quite thesame fashion. This, of course, doesn’t stopmany of us from employing the most popu-lar tools and sounds of the moment in aneffort to make the “freshest” soundingrecords. Anyone doubting this need merelylisten to any recording from the eighties.The gated snare once ruled this great landof ours with Phil Collins’ pudgy fist andsoon became an essential preset in nearlyevery product that has included drumsounds ever since. Nowadays, that explosivesound can still be heard occasionally, but itsuse has more to do with personal taste thanoverall fashion.

    The answers to the opening questionsoften begin at the source. A great recordingof a crappy instrument can sometimes beperceived as a work of genius (as in the caseof Tom Waits’ work over the last 20 years)but more often is simply heard as a crappyrecording, no matter how much magicyou’ve been able to work in the effort.Obviously, the musician’s skill and artistryare always the primary focus, and startingwith as strong a song as possible is para-mount in the equation. But if you arerecording a great voice, instrument, oramplifier, the game is yours to win or lose.

    Local guitar amplifier designer RandyBemis (bemisamps.com) is someone dedicat-

    ed to the concept of great guitar tone,which was easily demonstrated on a recentvisit to his workshop. During this field tripof overdriven discovery, my good friendWayne Preis (owner of Webstrings.com anda damn fine guitarist himself) played hiscustom-built Stratocaster through a varietyof Bemis’ amps. There were a wide assort-ment of wattages, tube configurations,speaker cabinets, etc. on hand, and we musthave gone through literally dozens of differ-ent combinations. As Wayne and I left ourmeeting with this talented and amiable arti-san, one thing was abundantly clear: Everysingle one of the amps played through wasstellar; its attention to sonic detail wasmatched only by its solid construction.Later, Randy was kind enough to allow

    me to keep one of his amps on hand in thestudio, The Bemis Old School Tweed Deluxe($1,295). The amp is relatively small, meas-uring 16 inches high x 20 inches wide x 8inches deep. There are four inputs markedNormal 1 and 2 and Bright 1 and 2. The “1”inputs are higher gain for single coil pick-ups, and the “2”s are lower gain to accom-modate higher output humbuckers. Thereare three “chicken beak” styled knobsmarked Volume, Volume, and Tone. While Iwas initially confused by the identicallylabeled ones, it was soon obvious that onevolume controlled the Normal channel andthe other the Bright. Additionally, there is aBass Contour switch tastefully tucked in theback of the amp between two tubes that,when engaged, tightens up the bottom fre-quencies, yielding some very satisfyingpunch. This switch operates on the brightchannel only. The top panel also includesStandby and On/Off switches, as well as ared indicator lamp. The speaker was a 12inch Weber Blue Dog.

    There is no preamp Drive knob, ratherthe amp is merely turned up to achieve itsgrittier tonal shades. This may seem prob-lematic to some of us who like where welive and don’t wish to move, but the OldSchool Tweed Deluxe’s power rating is anincredible 15 watts (!). This means that youcan get all that rich, luscious power tubecrunch without shaking the neighborhoodand without resorting to the “simulated”distortion from foot pedals. Another cooltrick this amp does is bridge the Normaland Bright channels together for even moreoverdriven fun. Simply insert a quarter-inchplug into the unused input of the channelyou’re in and connect it to the correspon-ding input on the other channel and voila!Double your pleasure.

    On an Americana-tinged album project,the amp’s clear, bell-like clean tones helped

    provide some Telecaster guitar lines withsuch a brilliantly tailored EQ that they werelaid into a dense mix with no additionaltweaking required. A recent project featur-ing Christopher Dale and Momma providedthe perfect opportunity to allow this amp’smuscular alter ego to rear its beautifullyugly head. Guitarist Charlie McCree hadalready laid down his basic rhythm tracksusing his trusty 1969 Ampeg Gemini ampli-fier. In an effort to broaden the tonal palletof our mixes, I suggested that we might tryusing the Bemis amp for many of the solosand overdubs. Charlie was, as usual, “downfor whatever” and we ended up tracking abunch of great riffs and blistering solos overan afternoon. Upon listening to the play-back, Charlie’s response was, “Man,Swenson. That amp kicks ass.” An observa-tion that was subsequently repeated morethan a few times during the sessions, as wasthe term “Sparkle.”

    In all instances where the Bemis OldSchool Tweed Deluxe was employed, I wasastounded at how much this amp’s sweet,three-dimensional tone “classed-up” myrecordings. As a longtime home studio dude,I was also very appreciative of the laterworking hours afforded by this little won-der’s lower volume. This is easily the nicest,most versatile amp I’ve ever recorded.

    RITES OF SPRING

    The spurious debate over nudity in pop-ular contemporary songs — long simmer-ing in the cultural kitchen — has recentlybegun to boil. The angry, bubbly spattersare starting to scald the skin of the fruit ofAmerican freedom and infect its refreshingcore. For a good time, call 853-1212.

    If in possession of only a speck of logicor objectivity or honesty, any miscreantwould easily, correctly lay the blame forthe coming catastrophe precisely where itbelongs: among the twisted hypocrisy ofthe holier-than-thous among us, the prissyidiots who invent and proclaim their owngoodness while delighting in their missionto control what others see and hear. Thesame self-righteous humanoids who arestill demanding front and back covers (dur-ing all times of non-use) for every nakedcompact disc, thus hiding from sight theshiny, sleek sensuousness of the surface,not to mention that shameless, gapinghole in the middle.

    To this day they deny that compactdiscs evolved from long-playing recordsand 45s (or the “dinosaurs” as they callthem) while ceaselessly warning that theyare veritable magnets for the evils of theworld, eager to distribute their gleaningsthrough headphone and speaker through-out every village, farm, and freeway in thisonce-wholesome land.

    How do you fight against these loonieswho insist that every naked CD infects itsvery songs, rendering them naked as well?How do you respond to their own tiredcliché, “If God had wanted CDs to benaked, he wouldn’t have invented jewelcases and inserts!”?

    Who better than the Beatles to give itto ‘em good a while back? Bless ‘em, theydefiantly released their latest work underthe brilliantly taunting title Let It Be —Naked. Gotta love the lads from Liddypool:still at the front lines of the Resistance,even with half their number fallen.

    So, inspired by the Fab Four, I girdedmy thrilling loins specially, deciding totrack down and expose the elusive presi-dent of the National Organization forCleanliness, Unity, and Morality, MargaretRevere. I became determined to offer ourreaders a clear view of the organization,this overactive womb that seems to beconstantly delivering litters of squealingconstraints to our society, plopping themdown randomly onto the soft hay in ourmangers of liberty.

    I also wanted to determine for myself ifMs. Revere is as much of a babe as I’dbeen told. And, tragically, she was indeedexquisitely beautiful: well short of 30years of age, with a face a figure to fryeggs on.

    Hose: First off, thank you so much forgranting us your time.

    Revere: Not at all. I enjoy your publicationthoroughly, Well, except for one ofyour columnists who seems quite...confused...or afflicted. And yourname again is...?

    Hose: The Hose. Call me Hose.Revere: Yes. Well, Mr. Rose, you want-

    ed...well, our position on theappalling state of the arts, musicparticularly. It’s fairly concise: weabhor the degeneration of whatmusic once embodied...its univer-sal, inspiring qualities are becom-ing or have become soul-numbing,family-destroying poisons.

    Hose: Hot damn, you’re beautiful.Revere: Yes, there’s still some beauty, I

    suppose, in gospel and polkamusic, but just about everything

    else...if we don’t wake up soon,we’ll pay a terrible price.

    Hose: Like the price we pay for freedom?Tell me, have you ever done anymodeling?

    Revere: I suppose just as a role model forupholding the values our countrywas founded on.

    Hose: Is that Chanel I smell? Pristeen,maybe?

    Revere: Perhaps it is the smell of thedefeat of decency, and, yes, it’s allaround us those days. And it’schoking us like Hell. Forgive myfrankness.

    Hose: Not at all. You’re making me nos-talgic.

    Revere: As we all should be, for the glori-ous times before this plague ofindecency first reached our shores[she shudders]. Oh, its seed was sopotent, so overpowering.

    Hose: Been there. Still am.Revere: So much to blame! The beat of

    blues, then rock ‘n’ roll. Imitatingthe most intimate of personalactivity...suddenly no longer inti-mate, but a big, sordid display.Then, sure enough, songsabout...animals! Then songs aboutchildren! And then, perverselycombined: “How much is thatdoggy in the window?” Disgusting,and a thinly veiled allegory forchild prostitution.

    Hose: That one’s still around. Someone Iknow says little girls are stillsinging it when he hangs aroundplaygrounds.

    Revere: And then Donny and Marie withthose vaguely incestuous innuen-dos. The longhairs with the drugsagenda. The ganstas and theircrime agenda. And MichaelJackson, who ran away with thoselittle blond boys he claims are hisbiological children! Incredible!Went to Bahrain, probably to getmarried to them. These must bethe end times.

    Hose: You mean time for the fat lady tosing?

    Revere: Yes. And in her agony, the songwon’t be pretty.

    Hose: Are other arts affected? Likedance?

    Revere: Some kinds. No, a lot. Squaredancing is fine, and we alwaysapprove classical ballet. And linedancing is acceptable for thosewithout any real talent, as always.

    Hose: Lap dancing?Revere: Tap?Hose: No, lap. Lap dancing.Revere: I don’t know what that is.Hose: May I demonstrate for you?Revere: Oh, please do. Does it come from

    Lapland?

    Hose: One moment.

    I turn on my ghettoblaster and the CDof Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Margaret issmiling, in a glow of what must be divineanticipation. I request and am eagerlygranted a brief moment to prepare for mydemonstration, so I hasten to an adjoiningroom and quickly strip down to my speedo.I hear her humming sweetly along to themelody, then calling, “Oh, please hurry,Mr. Rose, won’t you? I can hardly wait”

    The advent of the 33rd AnnualAdams Avenue Roots and Folk Festival isnow upon us, and San Diego will onceagain be privileged to host this extraor-dinary musical event as the result of theincredibly dedicated efforts of myriadremarkable individuals, such as Mr. LouCurtiss, who down through the yearshave put their hearts, passions, andherculean efforts into ensuring that thecreative spirit of this roots music willcontinue to flourish and be enjoyed bygenerations to come.

    It would seem to me that one ofthe true benefits of this festival, apartfrom the obvious enjoyment of twodays of uniquely distinctive music, isthe realization that we are the benefici-aries of a priceless legacy bequeathedto us by the artists and songwriterswho comprise that rather extensive, butloosely defined, genre known as “rootsmusic.”

    The vast spectrum of this unbeliev-ably varied musical catalog ofAmericana, which encompasses theblues, country, gospel, cajun, bluegrass,tejano, zydeco, ragtime, and jazz, tomention just a few, has been immeasur-ably enriched through exposure to gen-erations of ethnic musical influencefrom innumerable waves of immigrantsfrom foreign shores, all contributing tothe evolution of this wonderful culturalheritage.

    This music is, in essence, an inte-gral component of the roots that we allshare in common as Americans and, assuch, is one of the major contributingfactors that has made us the nationthat we are today. This treasure troveof musical heritage leaves one breath-less with awe and is literally there forthe asking, awaiting all those withnaught but the desire to seek it.

    It is with heartfelt gratitude andlike-minded commitment that my col-leagues and I at RadioASB applaud andsupport the tireless efforts of Mr. Curtissand others who, through their belief inthe significance and continuance ofmusic as a cultural art form, are respon-sible for preserving the creative bril-liance and musical genius of the rootsmusic genre, which instills a deep senseof pride in our culture and our heritage.
