2012 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON REVIEW

SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 3

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Sam Houston State University earned its second consecutive Southland Conference football championship with a 6-1 league mark in 2012. The title is SHSU’s fifth as a member of the Southland and ninth overall in 97 years of football. The Bearkats also won Southland titles in 1991, 2001, 2004 and 2011.

CONSECUITVE NCAA FINALS APPEARANCES Sam Houston State is one of only eight football programs to appear in consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Games. The list of other seven universities reaching the finals in back-to-back seasons during the tournament’s 34-year history includes Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Youngstown State, Marshall, Montana, Appalachian State and North Dakota State.

BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE DIGIT WIN SEASONS For the first time in Sam Houston’s 97 years of football, the Bearkats pro-duced double digit victories in consecutive seasons. The SHSU football team rolled to a 14-1 record in 2011 and followed up with an 11-4 mark in 2012. Both years, the Bearkats won the Southland Conference title then posted three consecutive playoff victories for back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Football Championship game at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

KATS 2012 RUN TO THE FINALS The 2011 Bearkats’ 14-0 run to the NCAA Division I Football National Cham-pionship game was incredible. But few can argue that the 2012 team’s road back to Frisco for a rematch with defending national champion and No. 1 North Dakota State is even more amazing. After a heart-breaking loss at Central Arkansas where the Bears scored 14 points in the final five minutes to upset the defending Southland Conference champion 24-20, Sam Houston State stood 1-2 and on the brink of having the team’s repeat playoff hopes dashed all together. The team responded. After the UCA loss in Conway, Sam Houston went 10-1 with the only loss to Football Bowl Subdivision No. 8 and Cotton Bowl bound Texas A&M. Seven of those 10 victories came on the road.

KATS SUCCESSFUL AWAY FROM HOME Traveling and winning big have become a habit for the Bearkats. During the past two seasons, the Kats have won an impressive 13 games out of 17 trips away from Bowers Stadium. Sam Houston’s seven victories outside of Huntsville during the 2012 season is a school single season best. The Bearkats out-scored their opponents away from home 404 to 233. That included 28 points against Cotton Bowl champion Texas A&M (more than either Oklahoma or FBS champion Alabama posted in their losses to the Aggies).

ROUTE TO FRISCO WENT THROUGH BIG SKY To reach the finals, Sam Houston defeated each of the three teams that ended the regular season as tri-champions in the Big Sky. The Bearkats eliminated No. 12 Cal Poly in the second round, No. 2 Montana State in Bozeman in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Eastern Washington in the semifinals Eastern Washington was the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division I Football Championships. Montana State was the No. 3 seed. Sam Houston, No. 5 in the final regular season Sports Network and NCAA Coaches polls, was unseeded in the championships. Sam Houston is 5-0 against the Big Sky the past two years with wins over Montana State and Montana in last year’s quarterfinals and semifinals.

BEARKATS’ NCAA PLAYOFF HISTORY Sam Houston’s 2013 trip to Frisco marked the eighth time a Southland Conference member has reached the NCAA Division I Football championship game. Sam Houston has been a member of the playoff field six times (1986, 1991, 2001, 2004, 2011 and 2012). The Bearkats are 6-0 in NCAA playoff games on their home field at Bowers Stadium. SHSU is 3-4 in road playoff encounters and 0-2 at neutral sites.

THE BEARKATS AND ESPN The national championship game marked the eighth SHSU football game on the ESPN family of networks in the past two years. The telecast also was the Bearkats’ 20th appearance on national or regional television since the 2011 season began.

BEARKATS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS Sam Houston finished its 97th football season No. 2 in both the Sports Network and NCAA FCS Coaches polls. The Bearkats’ No. 2 rankings each of the past two years represent the program’s highest NCAA final national rankings Sam Houston has been ranked among the FCS top 25 a total of 24 consecu-tive weeks since debuting in the national poll on Sept. 9, 2011. During an 11-0 regular season in 2011, the Kats rose all the way to No. 1. Sam Houston has been ranked among the FCS top 10 for 20 consecutive polls. Prior to the past two seasons, the Bearkats’ highest national ranking was No. 3 following a 2004 NCAA Championship semifinal appearance.

SAM HOUSTON AMONG THE NATION’S STIATISTICS LEADERS The Bearkat offense ranked No. 2 in FCS in scoring (40.0), No. 7 in rushing offense (268.3) and No. 10 in total offense (458.5). The SHSU defense’ ended No. 6 in FCS rushing defense (98.5).

BEARKAT OFFENSE POSTS 600 POINTS IN 2012 The Sam Houston offense rolled up 600 points during the 2012 season including 77 touchdowns and 20 field goals. Mississippi Valley State and Georgia Southern are the only other NCAA Divi-sion I FCS team to score more points in a single season.

“WINNINGEST” THREE YEARS IN BEARKAT HISTORY Sam Houston’s victory at Eastern Washington marked the 31st victory for the Bearkats since Willie Fritz became SHSU head football coach. The 31 victo-ries (six in 2010, 14 in 2011 and 11 in 2012) stand as the most by the Kats in any three consecutive years in the 97 seasons of Sam Houston football. Ron Randleman (head coach from 1982 to 2004) put together 25 victories in three seasons in the late 1980s. Willie Fritz was a graduate assistant and later assistant coach for Randleman at SHSU.

RUNNING BACK TIMOTHY FLANDERS All-America running back and two-time Southland Conference football “Player of the Year” Timothy Flanders holds 34 Sam Houston school records. The Midwest City, Okla., product stands as Sam Houston’s all-time rushing leader with 758 carries for 4,234 yards and 52 touchdowns. He broke the former school record of 2,688 career yards held by Charles Harris (1991-94) in the Bearkats’ season opening victory over Incarnate Word last fall. Flanders ranks as the third all-time leading rusher in Southland Conference history. Only Claude Mathis of Southwest Texas (4,694 yards in 1994-97) and Henry Field of McNeese State (4,358 yards in 1992-95) have gained more yards. With 52 career rushing touchdowns, Flanders is tied with Charles McDaniel of Lamar (1971-74) for most career rushing TDs by a Southland back. Flanders is No. 2 in Southland total touchdowns with 55 (behind Brent Grimes of Central Arkansas, 59). Flanders has eight touchdown runs of more than 50 yards to his credit. His 71-yard touchdown against Southeastern Louisiana this year is his longest gain.

SEMIFINALS SPECIALIST Timothy Flanders’ best two rushing performances both came in NCAA Division I Championships semifinals victories. Flanders rushed 26 times for 287 yards in the win over Montana in Huntsville in the 2011 semifinals. In the 2012 victory at Eastern Washington, he carried 34 times for 231 yards. That’s a total of 518 yards rushing in the two semifinals combined. Both games came down to big first downs to allow the Bearkats to run out the clock to insure victory against a team that a rallied to come within one score of winning. Flanders carried 22 yards on a fourth & one situation at the SHSU 47 in the Montana win in 2011. He gained five yards on a third & three play at EWU 21 at Cheney.

SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKAT FOOTBALL NOTESQUARTERBACK BRIAN BELL Brian Bell stands as Sam Houston’s all-time “winningest” quarterback, lead-ing SHSU to 30 victories as a starter the past three seasons. The junior from China Spring stands as Sam Houston’s all-time leader in both passing and total offense yards with 6,165 yards in the air and 7,080 yards rush-ing and passing combined. Bell’s 52 career touchdown passes also is an SHSU school mark..

CORNERBACK BOOKIE SNEED Cornerback Bookie Sneed snapped a Sam Houston record that had stood since 1968 with his 92-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter of the SFA victory. Paul Wenzel returned an interception 90 yards against Sul Ross for the Kat mark that stood for 44 years. Sneed has picked off four interceptions this year and eight in his career.

FRESHMAN WIDE RECEIVER CHANCE NELSON Wide receiver Chance Nelson, a transfer from Texas A&M, caught 35 passes for 671 yards and nine TDs as a freshman in 2012. He scored on a 61-yard pass at Texas Southern and a 70-yard strike against Southeastern La. In the Montana State win in Bozeman, Nelson scored on passes of 16 and 45 yards.

BLOCK PARTY RETURNS A Bearkat tradition established by head coach Willie Fritz when he was an assistant at Sam Houston in the early 1990s has returned. The SHSU “Block Party” has produced six blocks in each of the past two seasons. After Fritz started the “Block Party” in 1991, Sam Houston blocked 80 punts, field goals and extra points in the next 14 seasons.

LEADS AT INTERMISSION Only in the Bearkats’ 47-28 loss to FBS No. 8 Texas A&M in the regular season finale did Sam Houston trail at halftime this year. In SHSU’s other two regular season losses, the Kats led Baylor 20-10 and Cen-tral Arkansas 10-7 at intermission. In Sam Houston’s 10 victories, the Bearkats have out-scored their foes 305-101 in the first half. Sam Houston and North Dakota State were tied 10-10 at half. Down 34-0 at halftime at Texas A&M, the Bearkats came back to score 28 second half points in a 47-28 loss. The SHSU offense rolled up 41 minutes of possession time at A&M. In the second half, as the Bearkats outscored the Ag-gies 28-13, Sam Houston had 27:19 minutes possession time to A&M’s 3:41. The SHSU offense had eight third down conversions to the Aggies’ three and was 2-of-2 on fourth downs.

BEARKATS VS. HEISMAN WINNER While Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns against Sam Houston in the Bearkats’ regular sea-son finale in College Station Nov. 17, the Kat defense had its moments against Johnny Football. Dax Swanson intercepted a Manziel pass (Swanson’s 13th career intercep-tion, tying an SHSU school record). Jesse Beauchamp sacked the Heisman winner for a loss of nine yards. Manziel is the third Heisman winner Sam Houston has faced. The Bearkats played against Andre Ware of Houston his freshman season in 1987 at the As-trodome and Robert Griffin III of Baylor in Willie Fritz’s first game as SHSU coach in Waco in 2010.

BIG CROWDS VIEWED THE KATS IN 2012 Playing in front of packed stadiums is nothing new for the Bearkats. Sam Houston played in front of 87,101 fans at Texas A&M (second largest crowd ever to see SHSU play football), 44,856 at Baylor, 26,185 at Reliant Stadium in the “Battle of the Piney Woods” with SFA, 21,411 at the National Championship game and 16,417 at Montana State.

BEARKATS IN SEASON OPENERS Sam Houston State University begins its 98th season of football August 31 when the Bearkats by hosting Houston Baptist in Huntsville. The Kats own a 53-40-4 record in season opening games. Sam Houston has won 12 of its last 15 season openers and owns an 18-9 record in opening games since moving up to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision in 1986.

NINE ALL-SOUTHLAND BEARKATS RETURN Nine All-Southland Conference performers from the 2012 Bearkat league championship team return for the 2013 season. Running back Timothy Flanders is two-time Southland “Player of the Year” and wide receiver/wildkat back Richard Sincere earned conference “Offensive Player of the Year” in 2011. Flanders and Sincere both were first team selections. Sam Houston State’s 2012 Southland Conference championship team pro-duced 21 players who have earned spots on the all-league honor squad. Second team all-conference Kats returning include quarterback Brian Bell, defensive lineman Gary Lorance and defensive back Bookie Sneed. Receiving All-Southland honorable mention in 2012 were running back Kes-hawn Hill, offensive linemen Donald Jackson a, defensive lineman Jarrett Brown, linebacker Jesse Beauchamp,

87TH “BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS” Sam Houston’s 87-game rivalry with Stephen F. Austin is the oldest NCAA Division I FCS series in Texas. The past three years, the Bearkat-Lumberjack rivalry has brought more than 25,000 fans to Reliant Stadium in Houston, the largest crowd ever in the state’s history for an FCS battle. The event provided a stage for Sam Houston to gain exposure in a city in which more than 65,000 university alumni call home. The series began in 1923.

OTHER BEARKAT NOTESHow important is scoring the first touchdown? In Sam Houston’s 27 years of NCAA Division I Football Championship play, the Bearkats are 113-35-2 in games in which they scored the first touchdown. Sam Houston is 51-108-1 in games in which the opponent has scored the first touchdown.

Sam Houston stands 135-73-1 as an NCAA Division I FCS competitor in games in which the Bearkats have gained more than 300 yards total offense. Sam Houston stands 29-69-2 in contests in which the Kats have gained 300 or less total offense.

The Bearkats stand 87-23-1 at the NCAA Division I FCS level in games in which the Sam Houston defense has limited opponents to less than 300 total yards. When the Bearkats have given up more than 300 yards total offense, Sam Houston stands 77-119-2.

In NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision play, the Bearkats are 153-64-3 in games in which they have scored more than 14 points. When held to 14 points or less, Sam Houston stands 6-74-0. Defensively, Sam Houston stands 80-7-0 when the Kats hold foes to less than 14 points. When SHSU opponents have scored 14 points or more, the Kats stand 79-129-3.

Elliott T. Bowers Stadium became the home of Sam Houston State University football in 1986. In 27 seasons, the Bearkats have rolled up a record of 102-42-1 on their home artificial turf.

Willie Fritz already was a familiar face to Sam Houston fans when he left Central Missouri in December 2009 to become the Bearkats’ 14th head football coach. Fritz served as a graduate assistant for Bearkat squads that went 16-6 in 1984-85 and won the 1985 Gulf Star Conference championship. He was the secondary and special teams coach for Sam Houstno in 1991-92, helping lead the Bearkats to a Southland Conference championship.

Willie Fritz’s family has become a part of Sam Houston athletics. Son Wesley Fritz played as a forward for the Bearkat men’s basketball team in 2011 and 2012. Daughter Elaine is a member of the Orange Pride, winners of the 2011 National Dance Association dance team open division championship.

In the 97-year history of Sam Houston State football, there has never been back-to-back seasons like 2011 and 2012. The 2011 Bearkats rolled up 14 consecutive victories to earn the program’s first No. 1 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) ranking and a berth in the NCAA Division I national championship game. The 2012 team took a more difficult route with only four games at home in Elliott T. Bowers Stadium (as opposed to nine for the 2011 squad). But the result was the same with the Kats back in Frisco for the national finals. Sam Houston has won back-to-back Southland Conference titles, winning 13 of 14 league games while out-scoring foes 643 to 168. The Bearkats led the league in rushing offense, scoring, pass efficiency rush defense, total defense and scoring defense both years. In 2013, Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz and his staff return 40 lettermen including 11 starters back from the 11-4 championship team. The includes seven players who earned All-Southland honors last year. Heading the list of six returning starters on offense are running back Timothy Flanders, quarterback Brian Bell and wide receiver/wildkat back Richard Sincere. Flanders, two-time Southland “Player of the Year” and a Walter Payton award finalist in both 2011 and 2012, stands as Sam Houston’s all-time rushing and scoring leader. The senior from Midwest City, Okla., has rushed for 4,234 yards and 52 touchdowns and scored 330 points on the way to setting 34 Sam Houston school records. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in 25 games. Flanders ranks No. 3 in Southland rushing, starting the 2013 season 461 yards away from passing all-time leader Claude Mathis (4,694 yards in 1994-97 for Southwest Texas). Flanders is tied with Charles McDaniel (Lamar 1971-74) for the league career rushing TDs mark (52) and is four touchdowns behind Brent Grimes (59 TDs for Central Arkansas 2006-09) as all-time scoring leader Flanders has been named to 10 All-America squads the past two years including American Football Coaches Association first team and Associated Press second team honors. Bell stands as Sam Houston State’s all-time “winningest” quarterback. Since taking over as the Bearkat starter in the third game of the 2010 season, Bell has led the team to a record of 30 victories and only eight losses. He ranks No. 1 in Sam Houston career passing (6,165 yards), touchdown passes (52) and total offense yards (7,080). Sincere, a two-time All-Southland performer and 2011 Southland “Offensive Player-of-the-Year”, has rushed for 1,835 career yards and caught 47 passes for 824 yards. He has rushed for 19 scores and caught five TD passes.

2013 SAM HOUSTON STATE FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

SAM HOUSTON FOOTBALL MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 5

Flanders, Bell and Sincere have combined for 23 plays of more than 50 yards as Sam Houston has gone 31-10 during their three seasons as Bearkats. Three other running backs who combined for 951 yards and 10 touchdowns also return. Junior Keshawn Hill was an honorable mention all-league selection after rushing for 530 yards and seven scores. Junior Ryan Wilson and senior Ridgeway Frank also return. Sophomore Chance Nelson and senior Torrance Williams also give the Kats deep threats. Nelson caught 35 passes for 671 yards and nine TDs as a freshman in 2012. Williams has totaled 1,294 career all-purpose yards and scored eight touchdowns in his three years as a Bearkat. Sophomore Brandon Wilkerson and Stephen Williams and junior Rickey Smith also return. The biggest question mark on offense for Sam Houston in 2013 is the front line. Guard Donald Jackson III, who was an honorable mention all-league selection and was named to an NCAA FCS freshman All-America squad last year, is the lone returning starter. Junior Matt Boyles started five games last year and has 20 starts in his career. The Kats could see several red-shirt freshmen stepping into starting roles. The Bearkat defense that has been so dominate the last two years, allowing just 12.0 points and 262.0 yards per game in Southland Conference action, will have to reload in 2013. Gone are six players who earned All-Southland honors a total of 15 times in the past three seasons including two-time league “Defensive Player-of-the-Year” Darnell Taylor. Defensive ends Jarrett Brown(21 career starts) and Andrew Weaver (17 career starts) and tackle Gary Lorance (34 career starts) bring experience to the front line as seniors. Lorance was second team All-Southland, Barrett an honorable mention all-league honoree while Weaver was named to an FCS All-America squad. The other two returning senior starters are linebacker Jesse Beauchamp and cornerback Bookie Sneed. Beauchamp is the team’s top returning tackler (94 stops). Sneed has 99 career tackles and 38 starts to his credit. Both received All-Southland honors on the 2012 team. Linebacker Eric Fieilo, who missed the 2012 season with an injury, has 105 tackles to his credit as a three-year letterman. Jeremy Jackson, Kevin Jackson and Jyvante Williams all lettered as backup linebacker. Cornerbacks Shelby Davis and Deantrey Loche and safeties Tristan Eche, Desmond Fite, Cory Hamlett and Michael Wade also saw action in the secondary as reserves last year. On special teams, the Kats must replace an All-Southland punter, kicker and return specialist.

Willie Fritz has directed Sam Houston State to a 31-10 record in his three seasons as Bearkat head football coach. The 31 wins rank as Sam Houston’s most victories in a three-year span during the program’s 97 years. With back-to-back Southland Conference titles and NCAA Division I Football Championships finals appearances in 2011 and 2012, Fritz has reaped both regional and national honors. The awards include 2012 Liberty Mutual NCAA FCS national “Coach of the Year,” 2011 American Football Coaches Association “National Coach of the Year” and “Regional Coach of the Year” both in 2011 and 2012 and Southland Confer-ence “Coach of the Year” in 2011. During his tenure as Sam Houston head coach, 28 Bearkats have earned All-Southland Conference honors a total of 49 times, eight players have been named All-America and Kats have won Southland awards for “Player of the Year”, “Offensive Player of the Year”, “Defensive Player of the Year” and “New-comer of the Year.” The team’s 14-1 record in 2011 and the 11-4 mark in 2012 represent the two highest single season victory totals in Sam Houston history. Fritz, who has produced an overall record of 167 victories, 62 losses and one tie as a head coach, became the 14th head football coach at Sam Houston State University on December 18, 2011. During his 31-year career, Fritz has been part of programs both as a head coach and an assistant that have rolled up an overall record of 251 wins, 88 losses and five ties. The record includes 10 appearances in post-season play (bowl games or playoff appearances) and 11 conference titles. Fritz came to Huntsville from the University of Central Missouri were he stands as the “winningest” coach in the Mules’ 114-year football history. He rolled up a 97-47 record in 13 seasons as Central Missouri head coach. In 11 of those seasons, Central Missouri posted winning records. He is the only Central Missouri head coach to produce eight consecutive seasons of seven or more wins. Fritz served as a graduate assistant for Bearkat squads that went 16-6 in 1984-85 and won the 1985 Gulf Star Conference championship He was the secondary and special teams coach for the Bearkats in 1991 and 1992, helping lead Sam Houston to a Southland Conference championship and starting a special teams success tradition that lasted more than a decade. The “block party” saw Kat special teams block 80 punts, field goals and extra points in the 14 seasons from 1991 to 2004. From 1993 to 1996, Fritz was head coach at Blinn College where turned around a program that had gone 5-24-1 in its three previous seasons. In just a short time, he produced a 39-5-1 record and two national junior college cham-pionships. For his efforts at Blinn, Fritz has been inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame. As head coach at Central Missouri, Fritz led the Mules to their first post-season berth in 32 years when they defeated Minnesota-Duluth in the 2001 Mineral Water Bowl. A year later, Central Missouri earned its first NCAA Division II playoff berth after winning the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) championship. Fritz coached 152 All-MIAA performers including 41 first team selections and 24 All-Americans. Fritz ranks No. 15 among active NCAA Division II head coach in victories. In his 13 years at UCM, the Mules enjoyed an 84 percent graduation rate with three Academic All-Americans, 14 Academic All-Region and 144 MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll selections. Fritz was the second member of his family to coach at Central Missouri. His father, the late Harry Fritz, was the Mules’ head football coach in 1952 and later

Under his direction, the Bearkat Learning Enhancement Center, located in the Bowers Stadium Field House, opened in the fall of 1997. The facility allows Bearkat student-athletes access both to modern computers and to assistance from academic tutors. During his seven years as assistant athletic director, Williams’ duties included NCAA compliance, game management for home athletic contests, scheduling, facilities, tickets, marketing and concessions. As an assistant football coach, he tutored five cornerbacks who played in the National Football League. “Becoming a director of athletics was a lifetime goal. I have always been a goal oriented person,” said Williams. “As a secondary coach, we set and met important goals on teams that ranked among the nation’s defensive leaders. As an administrator, we set goals such as raising our department grade point averages, which we accomplished.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BOBBY WILLIAMS “As director of athletics, we have set goals. We have strived to bring this department to the forefront in computer technology, to improve our athletes’ academic standing and retention rates and to increase our revenue through fund raising and monies generated from bigger crowds at games. “Three times in recent years, we achieved our most important goal -- winning the Southland Commissioner’s Cup All-Sports Trophy. Not only does this achievement prove that each of our sports teams is vital to our program, but also it demonstrates the importance and contributions of every student athlete. Our staff’s efforts will continue to be directed toward higher goals as we strive to make the Sam Houston experience the best it can be for our students.” Williams was a starter at wide receiver for the Rice Owls. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in 1981 and his Master of Arts from Rice a year later. His father, the late Bobby Williams, Sr., was a member of Rice University’s 1958 Cotton Bowl team and retired in 2002 after working as an NFL scout for the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. His mother, Carolyn, recently retired from the Dow Chemical Company. His wife, Janet, received her Bachelor’s degree and her Master’s degree from Sam Houston as have her father General Thomas Stone (distinguished alumni 1999 and football letterman 1955-56), mother Claudette, brother Keith (football letterman 1978-79) and sister Kelly (Master’s degree). Janet is a professor in the SHSU College of Education. The pair have two daughters, Audrey Kathryn and Alexandra Karolyn.
