Columbus and LowndesCounty boast more than 60 indus-tries, and its economic develop-ment arm continues to recruitmore.

The area currently has thepotential to add thousands of jobsfrom prospective companies.

In 2010, more than $226 mil-lion was invested in LowndesCounty from new industry locat-ing in the area existing industryexpanding. The projects createdmore than 400 jobs.

This year, The Columbus-Lowndes Development Link ispursuing nine projects totaling3,435 jobs and $2 billion worth ofinvestment.

Current prospects includecompanies in the businesses ofsustainable energy, steel andaerospace, said Brenda Lathanvice president for economic devel-opment of the Columbus-

Lowndes Development Link.“Industry in Lowndes County

is doing really well,” Lathan said,noting the Link focuses part of itsefforts on supporting existingindustry.

Through company visits, Linkstaff determines the needs of localindustries and works withCongress and others to meetthose needs and also make com-panies aware of any incentivesavailable to them through newlegislation.

Current industries employ asfew as five people (Datco textileand tack cloth manufacturer) andas many as 560 (Severstal steelmill).

The 7,000 acres of land in theGolden Triangle RegionalAerospace Park is drawing moreinterest from prospective indus-try and is gaining internationalattention.

“We’ve had five to six countrieslooking at the park (online) —India, Germany,” Lathan said.

“One thing about the industrialpark is all of our sites, with theexception of just a few, are shovel-ready sites,” she continued. “Andwe control everything, eitherthrough ownership or option (tobuy).”

Those sites not “shovel ready”can be prepared within a matter ofmonths.

Industries at the industrialpark include Severstal and part-ners Mississippi Steel Processingand New Process Steel,Eurocopter, manufacturer of heli-copters, Stark Aviation andAurora Flight Sciences, whichboth produce unmanned aerialvehicles, and Paccar engine plant.

Paccar started its operations inthe Center for ManufacturingTechnology Excellence at EastMississippi CommunityCollege–Mayhew. It began opera-tions at its 440,000-square-footplant in December 2010. Sincethen, more than 2,000 engineshave been assembled at the plant,

with about 600 already deliveredto customers.

The plant, a $400 million

investment, employs 160 peopleand is housed on a 400-acre cam-pus.
