2011 Salute to Industry

Dear Calhoun County,

On behalf of the Calhoun County Chamber of Com-merce and its 1500 Member representatives, we “SA-LUTE” the manufacturing industries in our County.

Calhoun County is fortunate to have a strong and diverse industrial base that helps buffer our community against economic downturn. All sectors are co-related and co-dependent in a healthy and strong economy. Whether it is transportation, utilities, medical, education, govern-mental or other areas of our local community, we are all impacted and supported by industry.

Of course, the most obvious economic impact in-dustries play comes in their roles as employers. They give paychecks to employees who in turn deposit mon-ey in our banks, spend money in our stores and use local services.

Our industries take their role as corporate citizens se-riously. They contribute in terms of dollars and time to area schools, civic, charitable, churches and recreational groups.

Industry remains a cornerstone of opportunity and job creation in Calhoun County. For their contribution to Calhoun County, the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce would like to say “Thank You”.

Best Regards,

Phil Webb, ChairCalhoun County Chamber of Commerce

Industry is the basis of opportunity and job creation in Calhoun County. Ac-cording to the Alabama Development Office in 2010, expanding industry in Calhoun County announced 280 jobs and had $12.85 million in capital invest-ments. Since 1982, new and expanding industry has brought in $1.34 billion in capital investment.

With that being said, the Calhoun County Economic Development Council (EDC) helps bring businesses and indus-try to greater Calhoun County, Alabama communities. These include the commu-nities of Anniston, Oxford, Jacksonville, Piedmont, Ohatchee, Hobson City, Weav-er and others. Calhoun County is viable due to the direct interstate access, direct rail access, and a regional airport with a runway of over 7,000 feet. The location is halfway between Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama on I-20, making it one of the most convenient places to do business in the Southeast United States. The County is home to a diverse set of industries, from federal contractors sur-rounding the Anniston Army Depot lo-cated in the western part of the county, to automotive suppliers who service Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, Nissan, and other au-tomotive OEM’s located in the South. The EDC not only helps bring major industry to the area but also works with other lo-cal business support organizations to fos-ter entrepreneurship and existing busi-ness expansion. Calhoun County is also the region’s hub for healthcare, bank-ing, and higher education. Part of what makes doing business here so attractive is the high quality of living including Mt. Cheaha State Park, the Chief Ladiga Trail, two world class museums, and a host of other recreational activities.

The Calhoun County EDC offers one-stop service for the resources and guid-ance a business or industry may need

today in order to relocate or expand. They provide up-to-the-minute materials which directly address individual busi-ness needs including: site and building opportunities, existing building spaces, training programs, financial and tax in-centive information, infrastructure avail-ability, and government requirements. Calhoun County’s pro-business environ-ment can help get things done. The EDC has the land, workforce, and incentives a business or industry need today to do business in Calhoun County tomorrow, with over 600 acres of land, two specula-tive buildings and one in the process of being built.

Working with Calhoun County’s eco-nomic development professionals puts companies with a competent team of ex-perts who are committed to finding the best solutions for all aspects of business development. This team is comprised of dedicated, results-oriented specialists, each with a passion for generating eco-nomic success for future companies and the entire region.

2011 Salute to Industry

In 1977, Jack Holland started Auto Custom

Carpets, Inc. (ACC) with a handful of employ-

ees and one facility. Today, with corporate of-

fices and manufacturing facilities located in

Anniston, ACC is the world’s leading manu-

facturer of automotive replacement carpet and

has grown to employ over 150 employees and

operate out of five facilities across two states.

ACC manufactures original style automo-

tive replacement carpet, floor mats, trunk

mats, sound deadeners, and molded vinyl

mats. All of the products are year, make and

model specific and the company has applica-

tions for vehicles dating back to the late 1940s

to current year.

Products are shipped to thousands of re-

tailers and wholesalers all over the world and

the company takes great pride in the fact that

they do not outsource any of the administra-

tion or manufacturing.

Who would use ACC products?

ACC products are used by someone who

is restoring an old vehicle or restyling a new

one, someone buying or selling a vehicle that

has been smoked or rained in and needs to

freshen up the interior, or someone just want-

ing to update their vehicle’s interior. Car own-

ers interested in replacing stained, worn, dirty,

and stinky carpet and floor mats call on ACC

because replacing the carpet and floor mats

in a vehicle is still the least expensive way to

make the largest impact on the interior.

Is ACC hiring?

Currently, ACC does not have any posi-

tions available, but openings are advertised in

The Anniston Star. ACC is an Equal Opportu-

nity Employer. Employee benefits include 10

paid holidays per year, vacation days, direct

deposit, life insurance, annual flu shots, com-

petitive rates for BCBS medical/dental and

prescription insurance, ESOP, 401K, career

path program, plus many more.

Ken Howell, President and CEO said, “Al-

though Auto Custom Carpets, Inc. is part of

the automotive industry, we have our own

niche inside the industry. In the past, I have

said that we were recession proof. During

booming economic times, people were busy

restoring their collector cars and during poor

economic times, people were fixing up their

car they drove each day. We may have been

recession poof but we were not “Great Reces-

sion” proof. This recession has affected us as

it has countless other businesses. We had to

cut back and trim fat but with the help of our

employees, we held our own during 2007 and

2008 and have grown each year since.”

The management team has over 465 years

of combined service with the company and

includes a few employees who have been with

the company since its incorporation.

ACC is an employee owned company,

which means all of the employees have a

vested interest in the products and services

offered. After 90 days on the job, employees

have a company paid Employee Stock Own-

ership Plan (ESOP) account, which acts as a

retirement benefit. If company sales are up,

that means more money is deposited into

each ESOP account. When company sales are

down, the ESOP accounts do not grow. When

each employee gives their best, the company

grows and so do the ESOP accounts.

Industry Profile

“Although Auto Custom Carpets, Inc. is part of the auto-

motive industry, we have our own niche inside the industry.

In the past, I have said that we were recession proof. During

booming economic times, people were busy restoring their

collector cars and during poor economic times, people were

fixing up their car they drove each day. We may have been

recession poof but we were not “Great Recession” proof.

This recession has affected us as it has countless other busi-

nesses. We had to cut back and trim fat but with the help of

our employees, we held our own during 2007 and 2008 and

have grown each year since.”

ous improvement.

There are Hood Packaging plants located throughout North America to meet the packaging

needs of customers. There are nine plants capable of manufacturing a wide range of plastic pack-

aging products, eight plants able to meet paper bag packaging needs, and one plant dedicated to

manufacturing woven polypropylene packaging. Paper packaging plants are located in Anniston,

AL, Burlington, ON, Calgary, AB, East Angus, QC, Guelph, ON, Hamlet, NC, Monticello, AR and

Wilmington, OH. Plastic packaging plants are located in Arden Hills, MN, Burlington, ON, Cal-

gary, AB, Cornwall, ON, Decatur, GA, Grand Forks, ND, Montreal, QC, Roseville, MN and Tyler

TX. The woven poly packaging plant is in Goose Creek, SC. The location in Anniston is capable

of manufacturing printed rollstock, paper, plastic, and graphics.

In addition to packaging capabilities, the coating operation is extremely successful in provid-

ing coated paper products nationwide. Fifteen of the plants are registered to the ISO 9001:2008

standard, and thirteen hold American Institute of Baking approval ratings.

Because of the company size and history in the industry, Hood Packaging is fortunate to be able

to draw on the knowledge of experienced employees. The sales team and packaging engineers are

located throughout North America to serve needs of customers.

The sustainability effort at Hood Packaging is driven by innovation in the conservation of

resources; the use of sustainable and recyclable materials; by down-gauging and light-weighting

product specifications; by improving product to package ratios by matching customer and envi-

ronmental needs; and by offering new and exciting sustainable packaging solutions.

The goal at Hood Packaging is to provide a product that is competitively priced, high quality,

delivered on time, and that consistently exceeds customer’s expectations. They work to meet that

goal every day with their strong commitment to their customers.

Ricky BaldwinPlant Manager, Hood Packaging

“The Anniston Facility of Hood Packaging has

been a part of this growing community for over 17

years. Our facility has increased in number over

those years from 8 to 10 associates to, now, 50-60

associates. Hood selected this community to build

it’s plant because of the work ethic of the people

and the ideal location. Industries support com-

munities but strong communities help build strong

industries. Our plant believes in three principles

- SAFETY, QUALITY, then PRODUCTIVITY. Hood

- Anniston has been recognized for providing a safe

work environment with only one recordable accident

in the last 4 years and no lost-time injuries in over 5

years. Our goal in QUALITY is to consistently meet

or exceed our customers’ expectations. It’s proven

that when we get the first two right, PRODUCTIVITY

will be there.”

Huron Valley Steel

A Leader in Non-Ferrous Metals Processing

Since 1961, Huron Valley Steel Corporation has been a technological leader

in the recycling industry. Long before recycling became a global concern, Hu-

ron Valley Steel was researching and developing systems to increase metal re-

covery and reduce waste stream volumes. The many pioneering breakthroughs

have made Huron Valley Steel an industry leader in the recovery and recycling

of nonferrous metals.

Each year Huron Valley Steel processes close to a billion pounds of material

from automobile shredder operators. The metals recovered include aluminum,

copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel. This metal, which in the past was sent to

landfills, provides an economical alternative to extracting and processing metal

bearing ores.

Headquartered in Trenton, Michigan, Huron Valley Steel operates recovery

and recycling facilities in Belleville, Michigan and Anniston, Alabama and has a

joint-venture operation, HVF West, located in Tucson, Arizona.

Metal Recovery & Processing

Globally the largest volume of scrap metal comes from vehicles. Each year

more than 12 million vehicles are scrapped in North America alone. Prior to Hu-

ron Valley Steel’s development and refinement of automated sortation technolo-

gies, most nonferrous metal from automobile shredders was hauled to landfills.

Aluminum accounts for approximately 75% of recovered metals at Huron

Valley Steel. After processing, the aluminum is available to customers as a

mixed wrought/cast scrap, as a 3105 sow or as a 380 sow/ingot.

The remaining 25 percent of nonferrous metals recovered are comprised of

zinc, brass, copper, and stainless steel. Huron Valley Steel has the capability to

separate the majority of this mixed heavy metal concentrate into different metal

groups but today, due to market conditions, most of the mixed metal concen-

trate is sold to our customers in the Far East.

The Anniston, Alabama and River Rouge, Michigan facilities are ISO Certified.

Huron Valley Steel’s Mission

“We are motivated by the knowledge that the Earth’s resources are finite. We

are dedicated to seeking and implementing ways of reclaiming and recycling all

that mankind uses and casts aside. We are driven to our task by the conviction

that the bounty of this Earth is but a loan...not to be consumed but, rather, to

be shared with all future generations.
