PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have just completed our third quarter and your child’s third quarter report card will be sent home on
Wednesday, April 10. If you have any questions, please feel free to call your child’s teacher.
Our WASC Accreditation visit was on April 4-7. Initial feedback from the visiting team was very positive
and we are expecting to be fully accredited in May 2019. As soon as we get our final results, we will share
them with you.
We will be administering the Hawaii State Assessment (Smarter Balanced Assessment) SBA from April 22
to May 3. The assessment will be given to all students in grades third to sixth. Please make sure your child
is ready for the test by going to bed early and having a good breakfast before coming to school.
Thank you for your continued support.

other users within the same website.
Federal Law: Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
Gives parents control over what information is collected online from their children
under the age of 13 and how the information may be used.
Provides parents access to their child’s personal information and an opportunity to
delete the child’s personal information and opt-out of future collection or use of the information.
FACTS:
80% of online teens are users of social media sites.
88% of social media-using teens have witnessed other people be mean or cruel on social network sites.
Protecting Your Child on Social Media
Talk to your child about how to use social network sites and apps safely.
Talk to your child about what they post online because it can impact their future, e.g. getting kicked off sports
team, losing scholarships, etc...
Check out what your child is posting. Delete personal information and content you think is too much
information.
Know how your child is accessing social media apps. Review social media and apps settings to help them
keep information private.
Know who your child is talking to online.
Know the account settings for sites and apps your child uses.
Know who has access to your child’s information, i.e. “followers,” friends list, ads, etc…
Let your child know to talk to you if something online makes them feel uncomfortable.
For more information, go to: ag.hawaii.gov/cpja/ccp/
STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP

between cars stopped at the curb or walk from the far lane through the cones between unloading cars! In order to
ensure smooth and efficient pick-up/drop-off procedure, please do not park and leave your car unattended. If you
wish to park and go to your child’s classroom or the office, please use street parking. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

Last month, our school participated in a Moanalua Complex activity sponsored by the Moanalua Middle
School Student Government. Some of our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students wrote letters to the seniors at the
high school to encourage them to make good choices and be safe at their Senior Prom.
Thank you for your participation in the “Pennies for Patients” activity. We donated $2928.99 to the
“Leukemia and Lymphoma Society”. Congratulations to Mr. Furumoto’s class for having the most donations. They
will receive a pizza party at the end of the school year.
Our Student Council Elections Campaign Rally was on Wednesday, April 10 in the cafeteria from 8:30-
9:30 a.m. Students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade listened to our candidate’s speeches and voted for their

There was an Easter egg hunt and other activities.
April 17 is Earth Day and 4th, 5th, and 6th grade volunteers will clean up their recess area and the Salt
Lake District Park. The Student Council members will also be collecting dried out colored markers to send back
to the Crayola company for recycling. The markers will be mailed to the company on April 19.
April 17 is also Student Appreciation Day. Students will have “Free Dress Day”; they don’t need to wear
the school shirt, but please adhere to the school dress code. The committee is planning a short activity during
the four lunch periods and all students will receive a small snack.
Office Appreciation Day is on April 24 and Teacher Appreciation Day is on May 8. Our committees are
planning luncheons to show our appreciation to our office staff and our teachers.
On May 21, we will have a luncheon for the adult volunteers to thank them for their service to our
school. This will be followed by a luncheon to honor the class that had the most civic responsibility points, which

Spring Testing is Here!
April 23 through May 3
For grades 3, 4, 5 and 6, the Hawaii State / Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) will begin at the end of April. Parent Information Booklets will be sent home shortly before testing starts. The SBA consists of FOUR online tests, two ELA and two Math. It’s important that all students are present at school for ALL FOUR parts.
How can you help your child during testing time? Here are some ideas: Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep – try for 8 hours – the night before. Also make sure your child eats a good breakfast the morning of the test. Avoid sugary things. Please come to school on time. We want to have a nice calm start the morning of the test! Encourage your child to do his or her very best! Remember... Persist! Keep trying!
More information will be put up on the school website: http://www.saltlakeeshawaii.org
Practice tests can be found at: http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test
If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Laura Willcox or Tyron Kitashima.
Counselor’s Corner: In quarter 3, Mr. Kitashima and Ms. Willcox have been going into all classrooms to
teach Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Students have been introduced to the
SEL core competencies and have learned to practice calming strategies for focus
as well as positive problem solving.
