OCTOBER NEWSLETTER/BULLETIN 2015

The school year is in full swing and students and staff have settled into the school routine. Welcome to all of our new families who joined the SMP community in September and this month. I hope that you will be very happy and get involved in school life.

The warm weather has been a wonderful way to begin the fall season!! We’ve been taking advantage of the weather here at SMP with outdoor activities and outings. Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the cross country meets held by our school division. We are very proud of all of you!

SMP was part of a provincial attendance project for three years. Through this school attendance program, the number of student absences has diminished. In the month of September, 246 students had perfect attendance! Thank you to our families for your support in getting your children to school every day and on time! We are no longer fortunate to have this grant, but we will continue to recognize and celebrate our students for perfect and improved attendance at monthly assemblies.

As always, we are asking the adults in our school community to support our three guiding principles; Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible by being an example to our students.

Be Safe by obeying the traffic and parking rules around the school:

Do not use the school parking lots, back alley or front street for pick up and drop off. Instead, drop off on Besant or further away from the school and encourage your child to walk. Fresh air and exercise are good for everyone! Please choose safety over convenience!

Be Respectful by treating all school staff and community members with patience and kindness:

If there is a concern with your child, please contact the teacher by agenda, telephone or email to discuss your concern or to arrange a meeting.

Encourage your child to be respectful to the adults at school and remind them that all school personnel are there to support them.

Be Responsible by making sure to communicate with us:

Give the school proper telephone numbers where you can be reached in case of emergency and let us know if those numbers change

Make sure you have a reliable emergency contact person listed who can be reached in case of emergency

Notify the school if your child is going to be away

Send in permission slips on time and check your child’s agenda daily for notes and information

You are your child’s first teacher and they are watching and learning from you. We thank you for your support in helping to create a safe and inclusive school environment for our children.

Kind regards,

M. Millman

Our dear Mrs. Robson, who worked in the libraries at Salisbury

Morse Place School for 35 years, passed away from brain

cancer in September. We remember Mrs. Robson as a person

who gave so much to us as a community. Most of all, she shared

her passion for reading with us. Nothing made her happier

than to connect children with books they would enjoy.

To honour Mrs. Robson's memory, the Early Years and Middle

Years libraries will be creating book nooks; places where

students can read Mrs. Robson’s favourite books, as well as

their own. They will be places of comfort, surrounded by books.

We are inviting the SMP community and anyone who knew

Mrs. Robson to consider making a donation to this project. We

will be accepting money and new book donations. If you are

making a monetary contribution and are paying by cheque, please

make it payable to Salisbury Morse Place School. If you are

interested in donating a book, please consider purchasing a book

that is not already in our library. You can view our library

online catalog via our school website, or contact Ms. Regier

at [email protected]

If you are unable to make a donation at this time, we would

gladly accept recommendations of books that you remember

Mrs. Robson reading to you or your child.

on behalf of Free the Children and as part of our WE DAY! activities.

We are asking that all SMP students please bring a ‘Tin for the Bin’ for Winnipeg Harvest until Monday, November 2

nd, 2015.

Bins will be set up in the Early Years and Middle Years library.

We are also asking all students to collect food for the bins during Treat or Treating on Saturday, October 31

st .

Thank you for your support!!

Fundraising - Our first fundraiser of the school year is almost finished. The Show and Save books were a success!! Our future fundraisers this year include Pizza Hotline cards, Hoffmann’s Fine Foods, a bake sale at the early years winter concert, and Giant Tiger gift cards. All monies raised by the CSA are put right back into our school and all of our children benefit. I have many people coming and asking how come we do so many fundraisers at once. Not all fundraisers that get sent home are from the CSA and often have to do with raising funds for other committees within the school like camp or band. We have already allocated money to the school patrol program, the snack cart program and 3 classroom libraries.

CSA Meetings - Meetings this year will be held on every 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm. There is no meeting in December. Meetings generally last 60 - 90 minutes and free childcare is provided. All positions on the board are filled. We welcome new families to help us decide on how money raised is spent and help decide what future fundraisers we do. Meetings will always be listed on the school website calendar as CSA meeting. The November meeting is on the 19th so mark your calendars now. We would love representation from all grades in the school. If you are not interested in joining the CSA but have a few hours during the school year to help organize fundraisers please leave a note with your name and number for your teacher to forward to us.

Thank you and we hope to get a chance to see you soon.

The patrols have been hard at work since the first day of school! Constable Wahl came to

do a follow up training session in September. They were provided with their patrol cards

which will allow them entrance to Wheelies every Wednesday night for free and Saturday

morning movies at Silver City Polo Park or Silver City St. Vital. (Notes will be sent home to

inform when the movies are). Their first patrol movie was held on Saturday, October 17th,

they had a choice of two movies; SpongeBob Square Pants and Home 2D. The Winnipeg

Police officers volunteer their time to supervise these morning movies, which is a nice treat

for the patrols!

Please remind your children to cross with patrols as this is the expectation of all of our

students of Salisbury Morse Place. The patrols even cross students from Kildonan East

Collegiate!!!!

The patrols will be going to wheelies the morning of November 20th, watch for permission

notes going home in early November.

Patrols of the month:

September:

Shirin R. Nathan H. Rebecca P. Arianna M. Keona S.

Way to go! Excellent job all of you!

Allergies

There are several students with life threatening allergies in our school. We work very hard to provide a safe environment for all students. We ask that all families consider the following in the interest of safety:

Contact with even a tiny amount of an allergen can cause a severe reaction.

Nuts are the most common allergen in the school (especially peanuts).

Check the labels on food products that are sent to school and avoid all nut products

Thank you for helping to keep the school safe as possible for all of our students.

SAFETY FIRST...

PLEASE DO NOT use the school parking lots, back alley or front street for pick up and drop off. Instead, drop off and pick up on Besant or further away from the school and encourage your child to walk. Fresh air and exercise are good for everyone!

PLEASE DO NOT drive up onto the walks in front of the school to turn your car around or do three point turns in front of the school. It only takes a minute or two more to go around the block.

PLEASE DO make the right choice and take the time to keep all of our children safe!

Thank you in advance for your support!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your son/daughter’s safety is very important to us. We have policies and procedures in place at both the divisional and school level to support their safety. In the last several months our school division has been working with the Winnipeg Police Service, (as well as referencing materials from the RCMP and Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning), in order to review and strengthen the procedures we have in place to protect students and staff in the event of a safety threat at school. We would like to share details of these updated procedures with you now.

Safety procedures now fall into two categories: Hold and Secure, and Lockdown.

Hold and Secure will be activated if there is a potential threat outside the school. In these situations, the police typically contact the school and direct the school to go into Hold and Secure. When there is no longer a threat outside the school building, the police inform us that we can resume regular activities.

If our school is in Hold and Secure, the following procedures will apply:

All exterior doors will be locked.

NO ENTRY signs will be placed on each door.

No one will be permitted to leave or enter the school until school administration announces that

Hold and Secure is over.

Lockdown will be activated if there is a potential threat inside the school building. If the school is in Lockdown, the following procedures will apply:

All students and staff will proceed to the nearest classroom or office.

All doors to classrooms and offices will be locked and/or barricaded by the supervising adult.

Students will be kept away from windows and doors and instructed to remain silent and still.

No one will be permitted to leave their room until the Lockdown is over.

Effective September 1, 2015, all schools in RETSD are required to hold at least two Lockdown and one Hold and Secure practice drills each school year. The purpose of the drills is to provide training for staff and students so everyone knows what to do in the event of a safety threat. Everyone in the school building will participate in these drills. Students, staff and parents will be informed in advance of these practice drills.

If your son/daughter arrives at school during a Hold and Secure or Lockdown procedure, he or she must proceed to the school evacuation site, sign in and remain there until directed otherwise by administration or police. The evacuation site for your son/daughter’s school is: Kildonan East Collegiate – 845 Concordia Avenue

If you arrive at the school during a Hold and Secure or Lockdown, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE SCHOOL. Instead, please proceed to the parent/guardian information site where divisional personnel will be available to assist you. The parent information site for your son/daughter’s school is: Sherwood School – 509 Grey Street

If you hear about a serious emergency at your son/daughter’s school through media reports or other means, DO NOT PROCEED TO THE SCHOOL. Instead, proceed immediately to the parent information site identified above.

Please DO NOT CALL YOUR SON/DAUGHTER’S CELL PHONE during an emergency, particularly in a Lockdown situation where it is critical to remain silent and still and not draw attention from any threat makers that may be in the building.

In closing, our purpose in sending this letter is to reassure you that we regularly review our divisional safety procedures to ensure that we are doing our best to maintain the safety of your son/daughter’s learning environment. We do this through proactive planning and practise of emergency procedures in all of our schools.

If you would like to read more information about safety policies in RETSD, please visit www.retsd.mb.ca/YourRETSD/Policies and scroll to Section E: Support Services.

If you have any questions about the procedures described above, please feel free to contact the school office and ask for an administrator.

Sincerely,

M. Millman

The new Code of Conduct will be distributed to all students this fall, either in printed form or as an entry in their student agenda. The code can also be found on the division website at: http://www.retsd.mb.ca/Lists/Publications/code_conduct.pdf
