A TRUE CHAMPION OF THE EARLY CHURCH(/));}IJ any of us have the false impression that once the Christian ChurchUIIt survived the terrible days of Roman persecution and became the state

religion of the Empire, there was a "happily ever after" atmosphere inwhich the Church existed. Nothing could be further from the truth! For centuriesthe Church experienced times of great unrest, brought about by those whoattempted to introduce false teachings into her dogma. There were extendedperiods when the heretics held the upper hand, with even emperors and patriarchsfalling prey to theological falsehoods.

It was during such a time that MAXIMUS THE CONFESSOR served the Church.Born in Constantinople in 580 AD, Maximus served as a high-ranking official in thecourt of Emperor Heraclius. When he realized that the Heraclius was corrupted bythe Monothelite heresy, which taught that Christ had only a Divine Will, Maximusresigned from his position and became a monk; committing himself to defendingthe Church's true teaching as to Who Christ was -- as set down by the NiceneCreed. He traveled around the Empire, imploring the faithful to believe in thedoctrine of Jesus Christ having two natures and two wills. He wrote extensively onthis issue, carefully explaining the theological reasoning behind this teaching. Eventhough several local councils condemned Monothelitism, the controversy over theheresy continued to rage for decades, largely because the Emperor Constans IIwas one of its ardent followers. He had Maximus arrested and imprisoned in 654AD. His tongue was cut out and his right hand severed, so that he could no longerspeak nor write. Maximus was condemned to exile for life in Scythia, where hedied in 662 AD. The Monothelite heresy was ultimately condemned by the 6thEcumenical Council in 681 AD. The Council also exonerated Maximus anddeclared him to be a "Father of the Church."
